Re: Yate's Wine Lodge Blackburn

The little crooked street at the top of Church st. where the Sun and Swan (on left side) was Astley Gate (I think ) Sames Vault was on the opposite side, if you carried on, it then it took a 'dog- leg" to the top of King st. and Northgate was on your right (heading to the Police Station) . Heading along Northgate, a couple of streets went off to your right and went thru to King William st. and the original Yates wine lodge was on one of those , cant remember if it was before or after the Dun Horse ( I thought the Dun Horse was higher up, nearer to and more opposite the Police station , but before you got to the old Co-op emporium ).

slight wander...think the Dun Horse was " Gods waiting room" for the old prossies coming to the end of their working lives

Hope that made sense , cause now I'm getting confused :D ;)

if you were coming out of the Sun /Swan and walking down to Woolies corner on Church st. that was the New/replacement Yates Wine lodge , not the original one . :D :D

The Dunne Horse is on Mincing Lane as is the Old Bank.
Margo's folly is at the top of Higher Church Street.
The Swan has gone but the Sun is still there.
Going straight on from Mincing Lane will take you to the TSB Bank on Lord Street West.
The only Streets that leads on to King William Street from Northgate are at the back end of Marks and Sparks and the street that runs down from the library.....I think we may be getting closer?

Cashy...you are miles off......Mirabelle was on Randal Street.
If you focus on Tony's Empress Ballroom you would be in the right area. :)

Well then , that street which runs down from the Library is Town Hall St. (Tonys Ballroom used to be there , opposite a Lion pub , think it was the Queens) the old movie house Essoldo was at the bottom
thought the street near Marks and Sparks was Market st , but seem to remember Burtons being on that corner , and thats the street where I remembered Yates as being .
I dont remember the Dun Horse being on Mincing lane , where was it in relation to the Wheatsheaf ? and what pub am I thinking of then, on Northgate accross from the Police station (Not the Ribblesdale ) .

wheatsheaf was a thwaites house just around corner from mecca, the Dun Horse was further up on otherside of road. wrong again lol that was the Old Bank, Dun Horse was just off one of them off mincing lane on a corner.

OK that is it. I am going on top of my book shelves to see if I can retrieve Bob's book on old Blackburn pubs. If I hurt my back pulling heavy boxes down I shall hold Cashman personally responsible!

This thread has certainly caused a debate, think the reason no one can quite recall where Yates was is we must all have been P***** in those days:D
