do they still sell tripe?..there was a stall round from the copper kettle ..sold tripe seafood and stuff.. but now it's all gone I suppose ..I blame the European Economic Policey.. or maybe it's just a symptom of the deep depression of the credit crunch.

Will you be arresting him after you have finished building your case?

I know this isn't the Nostalgia forum and I have to confess I haven't shopped on Accrington market for over 45 years but this thread has taken me right back to 1960. I used to frequent a stall that sold lady's clothing and I bought many a nice top for £1/19/-. They didn't last long but, at that price, it didn't matter. I could buy a pair of "fully fashioned" nylons for £1/11/- from the "open" market and then spend half an hour in the Fish Market, just breathing in that wonderful fishy smell, before buying the plaice my mum had sent me for.

Back inside, there was a cheese stall, near the back of the market hall, where I used to buy Strong Lancashire and half a pound of strong cheddar then on to the tripe stall for a pound of honeycomb.

I'm still buying pretty much the same foodstuffs on Warrington Market. :D

I worked in Accy market in the late fifties as a butcher for George Feathers.
John Nolan was the cheeseman and there were several tripe dressers who sold their wares from small kiosks around the market...the fishmarket was brilliant....Cod in abundance, plaice, dabs, shell fish no problem.
Regulation started to take a grip and the market was dead from there on in.
If you were tempted to pay my rent on this market, I still would not stand it.
Take the Charter from the council and then maybe the market would flourish.....let the stallholders run the market.

Only for odd bits ocassionally, as I'm passing through, can get most things cheaper elsewhere.

Wonder what Dialynne thinks? Does she shop there? Or does she work there?

Was George Feathers related to Eddie Feathers, the boxer, who had a farm in West End?

No...........Both were known to me and there was no relation.

Just wondered. I knew poor Eddie well, I was very friendly with his younger children, and I know he had a brother who lived in Oswaldtwistle.

Did you know his wife?

Oh yes, extremely well, I spent half my life on their farm in the early 50s. Mrs Feathers was a very astute Irish lady, with a wicked sense of humour and a twinkle in her eye. She ran that farm when her husband became more and more brain-damaged.

Ah, you mean Eddie Jnr. He was the same age as my brothers, just an older lad when I was growing up (used to give us rides on his motor-bike around the farm fields). No, I didn't know his wife, I don't think he was married when I left West End. I believe he died a few years ago but I hadn't seen him for many years.

I was referring to Eddie Feathers the middleweight boxer. He was very well-known in the 1920s.
