Best Before Date
 

Saw an item on Breakfast TV this morning about food use by or best before dates, whats your take on this. To my mind use by dates I keep to, best before dates I give a little grace to. They interviewed quite a lot of people and a lot, especially the older end, said that they used things over the best by dates, how much over depended on the type of food. Some older people also said that in the olden days, before food packing and labeling, people used their own judgement on these things and never seemed to suffer any adverse effects

i dont mind going past the 'use by date' by a few days depending on what the product is, there is a stall on Blackburn market that only sell things that have gone out of date(at a big discount), i have never ever had a bad product from that stall yet

best before is an estimate, no one knows how long things like eggs will last and you would know if an egg was off as soon as you cracked it.... i use my own judgement, meat i will prob ise the day after unless ive frozen it, then i use it whenever(exept asda meat that sometimes looks dodgy in asda!!)
yoghurt, milk, fruit,veg etc, i'll use till i decide it doesnt look good.

Use my own judgement, they cant say "use before 20th" and if you eat it on the 21st it will poison you, they'll be working well on the safe side

I used my judgement today when I threw out a black banana, two wrinkled up apples and half a dozen satsumas with dried up hard peel plus a jar of bramley apple sauce which was busy growing a fur coat ... :D

Very cautious about eating anything beyond the 'used by date', although as K.S.H. has said ... probably OK the day after.

IMO, if it looks alright and dont stink funny or taste, then its ok;)

I have grocery deliveries every 2 weeks and bananas don't last that long, so when they reach a point when they are about to go black I mass pulp them in a liquidiser and freeze them in small containers.
I then use them in smoothies with yogurt, raw egg and honey.

I always buy food from asda, especially meat that has to be eaten on the day...I freeze it...and its cheaper:D

That reminds me of bread, they have the dates on the tab sealer.
Some brands of bread taste days old when they are supposed to be fresh,
and the taste on some top brands has worsened in the past few months.

Thinking of getting a bread maker, then I know what I'm eating.
So whats the best make of bread maker.

I have been using a breadmaker for years
My first one was Mellerware Home Bakery
The one I have now is better -Morphy Richards stainless steel breadmaker.
This one has a feature where the paddle folds itself down flat after the last knead so that only the bottom crust slice has a hole in it. It has a time delay so that you can wake up to fresh bread.

ooohhh theres nowt better than home made bread, the smell and the taste, but because it aint got all the crap in , like shop bread, it tends to go off quicker, but in my household, it dont :D

I make 2 small brioche loaves a week just for me
It has a lighter open texture and has a golden tinge from the 2 free range eggs that go in each loaf.
I keep it in a plastic bag in the fridge so that it is easier to cut a slice- otherwise it is too soft and squishy to cut straight

Can't beat Warburtons - for feeding the ducks with, thats all its fit for, awful stuff :eek:
We do our own now and then but personally think its best eaten that day, goes hard very quick, M&S when we buy from the shop.
We have a Morphy Richards bread maker but can't remember the model No.
