I can't see why some people think Wetherspoons won't do well. In both Burnley and Blackburn they are probably their busiest pubs. There are TWO in Burnley and I bet they are the number 1 and 2 busiest pubs in the town centre. One is even busy on a Thursday night, can you say that about any pub in Accy these days?

The real ale in Spoons is good. Abbot ale is the house beer which is very nice, along with Ruddles which tastes like dishwater.

I notice that this shower wetherspoons are not only demolishing some building out the back of the Commercial, they have also applied for a 9am opening license and a 3am closing license (thursday-sunday). No doubt that will mean more cops on town centre duty and more crime elsewhere.

Lets hope it's refused.

Don't see what the problem is with 0900 hrs opening, some people enjoy a cooked breakfast and a coffee. The alkys can obtain their drinks from many places at that time of the morning.
Quite possibly they are demolishing some part of the building that is not required and creating a smoking area in it's place.

They are demolishing it because it is unsafe... see #702 on Planning Applications thread, and go into Report. that emoticon for Tealeaf, not you Barrie.

'One's man's meat is another man's poison' as they say.
Lots of people do enjoy the buzz of Wetherspoons and it is these people they are pandering too.
I'm hopeful it will bring more people into town, and that is what it is all about really. Good to see that one pub chain has confidence in Accrington... :p

Pubs come and go these days but I've yet to see a Witherspoons close down.. once they get in they are in to stay..having said that I reckon it's long overdue for Accy... I don't think it will cause any of the near town center pubs much hardship simply because most people out for a night out in Accy move around from pub to pub.

cashman 09-05-2011 22:57

They were refixing the Blackburn Rd sign this morning. I thought they were taking it down and renaming the road Britcliffe Way or something similar :D

If anybody gets chance to look down the back way they have done a lot on the' back garden', quite a few rainforests have probably dissapeared to get the wood and they had the artificial lawn company there last week.

Seeing that photo and the ones Atarah showed of the bottom of Burnley Road, don't you think a major sandblasting excersise would be a good(and cost effective) way of improving Accringtons image? If only in the town centre and on the main roads?
The sandstone and millstone grit have lovely colours when 200 years of dirt are removed, if you go to Darwen a lot of the side roads terraces have been sandblasted en masse and they seem to be owned with pride. You can see how well the old houses and buildings were built.

Tealeaf 17-07-2011 17:53

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

The place looks bland and appalling, as is to be expected from a Wetherspoons pub. The long sign contains a mish-mash of fonts and above it the hanging sign is totally meaningless. Both are simply an advert for the pub chain, rather than state the uniqueness of the hostelry. It might as well be a happy Mac's.

Still, I suppose that's a fair reflection of what will lie inside.

Margaret Pilkington 17-07-2011 17:59

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

It is certainly better looking than when it was boarded up with sheets of perforated metal.

Tealeaf, you are exhibiting a kind of snobbery.

We cannot all sup at quality establishments. And while it may not be to your taste, no-one will force you in there with your arm shoved up your back.
It will cater to a certain market.......and I would hazard a guess that there will be plenty trying it out to begin with.

You miserable sod! Everyone knows what they're getting from a Wetherspoons and they've made a better job of that building than what was there before. I personally love them as a chain, no frills pubs which specialise in real ale. I've never seen one shut down and everyone is talking about it, it's got to be good for Accrington.

I look forward to giving them my custom.

Look at the quality of the stone work, not the fonts, we're talking about a building, not a sign writer. There are a lot of quality buildings in Accrington which are hidden, un-noticed under dirt.
It could be standing proud long after the modern breezeblock/concrete rubbish has gone.

What snobbery? Please specify.

I doubt very much that there will be a proper tap room in this establishment That is a place where good men and true can exchange opinions sbout the wrongs of this world, where strong language is no barrier to frank discourse, where the bar is liberally decorated from post cards from the Costa del Sol, where betting slips are enthusiastically completed, where someone farts and no one objects and where everyone knows who's been in and who's not.

I remember drinking in Tim Martin's (aka Mr Wetherspoon) first pub up in Muswell Hill, in London, over thirty years ago. He was behind the bar and certainly a character, a big guy - about 6ft 6" with a typical antipodean sense of humour. A few year's later I was drinking in one of his first pubs in his chain, in the West End. It was called 'The Moon over Water' or something similar, a name he'd nicked from George Orwell's essay on the perfect English pub. Except this was not quite and you could see the rot was starting to creep in; it's been downhill ever since. I really can't be bothered visiting any of his establishments.

I do believe the stonework was laid by Accy's finest stonemason's, over a hundred years ago. All that was needed was proper cleaning and restoration, which numerous companies are now capable of doing.

As for the external signs, my budgie could have done a better job.

What is inside the building is another matter. I don't have to visit it to know, but I can tell you now it will be no different than the crap to be found in any other pub in this chain and as for the food - yuk! Give me a tin of Pedigree Chum anyday.

Tealeaf, the tap room doesn't seem to be required these days...since bad language and swearing in public appear to be the norm.

As for snobbery...read post 173 again and tell me there isn't an undercurrent of snobbery in it.......you compare it to Mc Donalds in a way that can't be considered complimentary.....and to confirm what I am saying you only need to read post 179.

You make unjustified comments, because none of the general public have yet been inside the place......and while you might prefer a tin of dog food, there are others who will go in and spend a few quid having, what to them, might be a pleasant time.........and it does help the local economy.

You may be able to choose better establishments(you may be better off than most Accringtonians....I don't know)......there may be more salubrious drinking holes where you live....down in the city.

And I must say your budgie must be very talented...have you thought of entering the bird on Britain's Got Talent?

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

There are about 800 pubs in the Wetherspoons empire; that works out at about 1.25 for every parliamentary constituency in the UK. Hyndburn must probabaly be one of the last places in the UK to have one (maybe Inner Mucky in the Outer Hebrides is one place that does not).

Over the years, I have probably been in about 40 or 50 of these places, and they are all the same - bland and boring. If Real Ale is your thing, then you may of heard of it's reputation, but quite honestly, any pint of real ale you get there would probably be best served by splashing it over your dodgy Wetherspoons Vietnamese Cobbler fish and chips than attempting to drink it.

I've seen similar levels of excitement on here when the latest kebab bar has opened. No doubt you'll enjoy this rubbish as much as you'll enjoy that.

So - Bon appetite - and try not to choke on it, because I would like to see you back on here.

It will be on a par with the Calder and lots of other establishments of that ilk.......as I said in a previous post, you may be lucky enough to live where there is more choice.......but to be honest, Accrington can only support so many of these places and the places that you would likely visit would perhaps not find the kind of custom to keep them afloat.
I don't suppose you do cheap and cheerful do you?

I agree with Margaret, it is much better than a nice building being left empty.
We dont have that many pubs in the town centre any more and a new one is welcomed.

I for one will be popping in later in the week and if I like it and its comfy I will be stopping for more than one drink! ;)

Just a thread wonder, I was talking to the Landlord and Landlady of the Talbot In Church St Burnley yesterday, if you like real ale that's the place to go, they won the northwest pub of the year last week from Camera, well worth the trip

Have I not read elsewhere that Tesco Nelson also shut down some time ago?

So I wonder which will be first to go in Accy - Tesco's or Wetherspoons? Maybe it's worth starting a new thread on which will shut first. Pubs are normally shut when the only punters left are the riff-raff and from what I have read on here, the Accy branch of Wetherspoons is already full of 'em.

For heavens sake Tealeaf don't put ideas in Bee's mind for another thread;)

Two threads on Weatherspoons, very confusing. This was the original so I will reply to this, been in, loved it! And, the garden outside is very very nice.

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

oh Atarah, don't tell Tealeaf....it is his opinion that the place is only frequented by chavs, ne'er do wells, and of course people who are not worthy of anything that comes close to respect.

In fact, to hear him talk, it is the bottom step of the slippery slope.

Was boarded up but has now re-opened on the 220711 as a JD Wetherspoons, they have spent a fortune on it

One of the first places I ever saw a pool table in a pub back in the 70s

I went past the Commercial this morning. That 'A' board is still on the pavement, by the crossing. Someone needs to pick that thing up and sling it through Wetherspoons window.

well, why didn't you then? I am surprised that your sensitivities allowed you to be on the same street as the hated(by you) Wetherspoons.

Weatherspoons has just opened up the White Hart again in Todmorden so that is one more for you to avoid Tealeaf.

I used to frequent the White Hart years ago, the last time was Nov 2009. It has been boarded up for about a year and looks much better (from the outside) than it did.

Because I was on the bus to Manchester, to get the train to London.

It is the council's job to remove dangerous obstacles from the pavement, so why aren't they doing it?

Margaret Pilkington 08-08-2011 19:59

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

Maybe Wetherspoons have permission from the council.
