Although not ideal Weatherspoons are a large & ongoing concern & although I personally am not keen on these artificial, fizzy pasteurized pish peddlers, at least they are bringing work & money into an area which has to be a good thing !

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

Don't wetherspoons go move into already bustling areas to try and cream off some of the busy trade. Seems they might struggle in Accy then.:rolleyes::confused:

It's Regency. They've already got a contract on it. Not sure when they'll be starting work on it though. I only know coz the landlord I work for told me.

My favourite restaurant very nearby - Quattros - have said to me that trading in Accy centre has not been as good as expected.

The opening of Witherspoons may well eventually result in the closure of both of them.

Has been discussed in this thread, Sazandy .. looks like you are not the only one who has heard this rumour :

Try #24 onwards.

I think Weatherspoons would be a good addition .. this chain has always proved popular in other areas.

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

Mind you, access & location will have a major bearing on any enterprises ambitions, especially a Weatherspoons, they'll be looking for constant, viable turn over & if things don't add up I don't think they'll bother.

I'd rather they came, than have another empty pub, but personally I don't like them.

One opened in my manor in sarf London.

No music equals souless to me.

Plus if you dance on a table, you get funny looks when it's done in silence.

Could have a point.

Shouts of 'Off! Off! Off!'

Might have meant me on the table, rather than the removal of my combinations.

I always wondered where Pat Butcher worked, before moving to Walford.

Did she still have big ones then?

A chain of pubs that depends as much, if not more, on selling meals as well as booze.

There is a standard menu in every one, which, to me, reeks of extensive use of microwave ovens and the ingredients pre-prepared elsewhere:eek:

You get the same menu in every Wetherspoons, and I don't mind them decent value, good beer, I'll probably stick with the Calder but no doubt if and when it opens we'll give it a whirl. I think it's great for Acc, no pubs except the Calder doing food and decent enough to take yer mam in on a Saturday ! ( Other than the Swan, bit of a hike though!)

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

Putting aside the doomsaying for a moment.....

Whether they like to think it or not, pubs very much need one another in a town centre because far from being competition it is viewed as something else to draw punters in. Bamber Bridge near Preston is a case in point; one by one the pubs started closing, isolating pockets of the town and making the old pub crawl quite a fair old trek without a pint. For anyone who doesn't know Bamber Bridge, it's at the end of the M65 and about a mile and half long from one end to the other, at one time lined from end to end with drinking houses.

I'd welcome a Wetherspoons in Accy, it would probably tempt me to go out drinking there of a weekend and certainly be a big draw after lengthy council meetings. There's no frills which keeps costs down, the food is decent and they support microbreweries by always having dozens of real ales on.

We could do with Wetherspoons looking to invest in villages, it's the panic button for local pubs.

I just noticed the CNN news channel and saw a scruffy, boarded up building which I thought at first was the Commercial/Regency.

"Bloody Hell, " I thought, "Has the Wetherspoons in Accy story hit the international news?"

But I was wrong. It's rioting in Cairo.

I guess the Egyptians don't like Wetherspoons, either.

Just to pull you up Wetherspoons sell a wide range of real ales often sourced from local micro breweries at reasonable prices along with the normal fizzy pish they also sell

My thanks for your insight. It was a while back since I ventured through the portals of Weatherspoons due to the reasons stated, an abundance of fizzy pish or some such other processed beverage.

Now after your enlightenment & the piquing of my curiosity, I may venture into one on my next return to UK. ;)

Well it seems Wetherspoons are opening in Accrington although in true Telegrapgh style they have totally screwed the story up

Quote:

ACCRINGTON town centre has been given a massive boost after it was announced that two major national chains are to open in the town.

JD Wetherspoon is to open a pub at the former Officers Club at the Broadway entrance to the Arndale Centre with a £1.4million investment, creating 40 local jobs.

And cafe giant Costa Coffee is to take up the former Officers Club site at the Broadway entrance to the Arndale Centre, creating six jobs.

I can't exactly see queues round the corner for a Ristretto Doppio double decafe at three quid a time but I suspect the local alco's will be camped out on the pavement at 8am for their bacon butties and early morning pints of snakebite

The end result, of course, will be a couple more traditional pubs closing round Accy. Of course, I won't mind if one of those establishments is the Bee’s Knees (or whatever its title is these days) but my guess is the closures will be among those just outside the town centre.

That someone wishes to swap a proper pub for a ghastly drinking emporium is beyond me; I will certainly not be setting foot in the place – you’d sooner catch me in a Mac’s or a KFC than a Wetherspoons. In fact, there’s very little difference – the latter is no more than a licensed variation on the former and the only debate is on the quality of the pigswill that is laughingly sold as food fit for human consumption in all of these outlets. Still, I suppose if it attracts the local riff-raff and keeps them out of respectable boozers then some good may come of it.

This is going to come as a bit of a shock.........I agree with you.

My point was that Costa Coffee is (relatively) expensive(when you can get your coffee and a bacon buttie for £1.99 at Greggs), whilst Wetherspoons places cater for those who have not got bottomless pockets...hence the comment that they might do alright.

was in a weatherspoons on saturday in grangemouth .. the earl of zetland with spugs ... cost for 2 main meals with assorted side dishes and 2 drinks .. many of which would interest you bitter drinkers theyre doing a beer festival at the minute thats running till 10th april

Our Ales From Acorn 1887( God Created Tangerine) to Big City Jamaica Stout | Wetherspoon's, No1 For Real Ale

anyway it cost us £18.54 for our tea ... and there was plenty .... and it was good ..

We need an eating establishment in accrington that I can go in with my sister and children, you can't go in the calder, the lancashire tea rooms is a rip off, 1.60 for a can of pop! There is hardly anywhere to eat decent food where there are facilities and space for little ones, and is rather drink dirty dish water than a greggs coffee! Sorry Margaret! Decaf vanilla latte for me please!

I didn't say I would drink the Greggs coffee, but lots of people seem to(I suppose it comes down to what you are used to drinking).......and your decaf vanilla latte comes at what price?

My point was that there are places where people can get a hot drink at a cheaper price....and if it is all you can afford then that is what you will buy.

I don't drink much coffee.(if I have to have coffee, then I choose instant.....hate the bitter taste of ground stuff) I am a tea person, but proper leaf tea, not tea bags.........tell me who serves that in Accrington?

Must admit that I'd be tempted into going in if I was in the UK, some of the Beers mentioned in the blurb seem quite appealing. I think if you enjoy trying different brews it'd be worth a visit to sample a few ... couple ... several ... Oh what the hell ! Lots ! :D Cheers !

Yes, but I fear there is only so much custom to go around........and people usually stay loyal to the places they know - especially when they have had good service........and that service is provided by local people, rather than a huge franchise(OK so it might be run by a local person, but the branding is a huge company with branches on many high streets).........I will wait and see.

I've been on the new pubs section of Wetherspoons website and there's nothing listed for Accrington as yet.

Probably be open backend of summer early autumn.

Well the old "Regency" signage has come down as of today so looks like the new owners can't wait to spent the alleged £1.4 million doing it up!
What on earth can you spend that kind of money on?

Wonder if it will revert to " The Commercial" or have a new name?

anyhoo, welcome Wetherspoons, it's good news I think, and will give The Calder a bit of competiton.:mosher:

It's in a prime spot. Opposite the bus station on Peel Street and the market. I think it will be a goldmine.

We could do with some decent pubs in Accrington.

I think like most franchises, it will only be as good as the people who run it.
Saying all Wetherspoons are crap is like saying all Thwaites pubs are rubbish.
The acid test will be whether the folk of Accy go in and part with their hard earned shekels.

They might decide to honour the person who does more for Accrington than anyone in local history.

Might be The Brit or The Cliffe :D

They do tend to name their pubs after local historical figures/places from the area. Mind you, most people just call it Wetherspoons at the end of the day.

They are always keen to promote that they do welcome children (up until 9.00 p.m), which is good.

Kids till 9pm Kate, that would rule me out for a start, I belong to the old school which thinks the time for kids to be in pubs is when they are legally old enough, or can get away with it, sorry

Used one in Bristol quite a bit when home from Saudi and found it quite good. Clean, food reasonable, both quality and price, beer, good selection and cheaper than other pubs, no drunks or attitude and very rarely heard obscene language - they were told to shut it or leave.
If they apply the same standards in Accrington a lot of the yobs and yobbesses are going to have to learn a new vocabulary

It's because it is considered an eating house too, Jaysay, not just a pub.

Makes no difference to me Kate, a restaurants a restaurant a pubs a pub end of as far as I'm concerned
Just as an after thought, it wouldn't be saw bad if parents would control their kids when they were out but in my experience they just let um run wild

Restaurants serve alcohol though, Jaysay.
There are lots of family pubs like this now and I think, as per Barrie's thread, this is why the staff clamp down more on the ones that are more than racous.
Of course, there are always going to be the parents who don't discipline their children ... again, the staff would have a word with them.

You have to visit one to see what the atmosphere is like.

phil8715 03-04-2011 12:32

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

I actually agree with Jaysay, You want to go in for a quiet pint and the last thing I want to see are kids running around in a bar bumping into people spilling drinks, and the parents doing nothing about it.

Pubs are for adults not kids.

Can see am banging my head against a strong (Nori ? ) brick wall here.

Of course, wouldn't like to see children in The Bridge/Bees Knees and places like this ... but is a dining pub. Take a look at their menu :

Quality Food, Great Value | Food Menu | J D Wetherspoon

It's because they cater for families, they are so successful.

Must admit I like a Pub that's a Pub, a smoky (as was) den of depravity that served Draught Ale & the only bottles you get are Spirits or mixers (with maybe a couple of bottles of Milk Stout for Old Mary as she won't have owt else), non of your southern shandy drinking multi lumocoloured, sweet, sticky, fruity, trendy, alcopop rubbish thank you very much :D

But Pubs can't live by Ale alone so now we tend to see an increase in Gastro-pubs, where you don't just go for a bevvy after work or to watch the Footy or a fly pint before Sunday Dinner, that culture has long since disappeared, you may occasionally find a "Working Mans' Club" (also dying out due to the Equalities harridans) somewhere where time has stood still & they're true to the old ways but the majority of places now offer you an "experience".

It may not quite be the experience you'd like to partake of but it's just moving with the times & the Landlord hedging his bets to keep turnover coming in, simple enough to avoid if it's not your thing just go take refuge in the "Railway" (I believe that's the place for the harried & harassed to be ;)). You never know they may even organise a day out ! :s_aim1: Enjoy it while you can !

If Pubs don't move with the times then the majority of them will close as we are seeing - how many have closed in Hyndburn in the last few years? Yes, let's keep the traditional watering holes, but do not dismiss the Gastro-Pubs out of hand.
What would you prefer, a Gastro-Pub in the centre of Accrington or a boarded up building?
I know what my preference is.

Tealeaf 06-04-2011 13:30

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

I would certainly have no objections to the Commercial being turned into a gastro-pub; it would cetainly be far preferable to Weatherspoons ruining the place.

Children are allowed in The Bees Knees during the day, but I agree with you Kate as to why they are so successful. As well as the fact they buy in bulk and don't have to pay for a music licence hence the cheap prices. Although at weekend nights the Brun Lea - Wetherspoons in Burnley, The Eric Bartholomew (Morecambe) and one of the Liverpool City Centre ones do play music.

With regards to the name I think it should be named after one of the Accy Pals or be named The Accrington Pals.

All in all i'm with Lancashire Lassie on this one, I can't wait.....cheap cocktail jugs!!!!! (haha)
