Re: Help! Whalley hospital information
My mum was a nurse at Brockhall and Calderstones hospitals for all of her career, and she too told me that many of the elderly residents were sent there as children or young adults for what we,today, would consider something and nothing. They spent the whole of their lives in the hospitals, largely forgotten about, becoming institutionalised along the way. Also, I think there is a cemetery in Whalley that was used by Calderstones. I think it appeared in the Telegraph a couple of years back as it had become neglected and forgotten about. Maybe there could be clues to be found there.

Ref - Calderstones
At one time there was an attempt to reintegrate those women back into society. Social workers set up a 'half way house' where they could try to live independantly. Two old ladies (maybe more that I wasn't aware of) did prove they could cope and I arranged payments for houshold goods. |
