Answers and Comments Please

Let me explain. I spent a lot of time browsing through AccyWeb before joining and on the many occasions when a Thread was branching away from the original topic, the posting drawing attention to this was made on the actual Thread.

So, following what appeared to be Custom and Practice I did the same when I came across what seemed to be a flagrant example, and a Moderator must have felt the same although no action was taken.

I am well aware that it is so easy to go off at a tangent and there are numerous examples were this has occurred without comment and I am sure it will continue.

I have been led to understand that the use of Capitals in a posting signifies shouting. The type size in reply to my comment suggests a near hysterical outburst.

Most organisations, and I am relating, in this context, the membership of AccyWeb to be an "organisation", have an Inner Mafia, to whom criticism, particularly by a Newby is resented.

I hope this is not the case on this superb Board, which tolerates postings ranging from the almost inarticulate to the magnificent prose of our friend A-Bob

Re: Answers and Comments Please

If I have a problem with a post, I tend to report it to a moderator. That way, I have expressed my views and leave it to them to decide whether or not to take action.

I have reported posts on two occasions - the first time the post in question was deleted; the second time no action was taken.

I am relatively new here as well, but you pick up on things as you go along, and it may be worth while leaving the moderation to the moderators, and report things to them in the first instance, to allow them to decide and take the appropriate action.

I am a mod on other forums, and would rather someone reported a post to me than start world war 3 on a public forum. The matter can then be dealt with quietly and out of the public domain

Re: Answers and Comments Please

yep i agree with you there VORLON24
moderators can and sometimes do miss posts and if its not reported then nothing will be done about it
as this board is getting very busy its easy to miss a post here and there
so if you see a post you think is out of order please REPORT it

Re: Answers and Comments Please

As a newbie myself l was gratful to Mez, for explaining the role of the moderators.l was politely told by the moderator, that my introduction thread was turning into a garinda chat room, and that wasn't the idea, and that l should post in General Chat. Sensible advice l adhered to.
Personally, l like the way a thread can twist and turn, and then come back on topic.

Re: Answers and Comments Please

Thoth, may I start by immediatly going off thread & thanking you for becoming a member of Accyweb, new members are needed & welcome to give their opinions just as much as any other member of the site. Without your input we have a grave danger of just getting stuck on the same old topics & re-stating what has been said before, (on thread from now).

Yes the use of capitals CAN signify shouting, but this is the English language capitals & putting a comment in bold type
can also be a way of emphasising the way the contributer wants their thoughts to be displayed.

If you are refering to my reply (quoted below), then you should also notice that it ends with a group of smilies, in an attempt to show that my reply was tongue in cheek
, because I often attempt to introduce humour into my replies. (Obviously didn't work for you though did it?:p).

Quote:

The very fact that you posted this reply in this thread proves that you too can be just as guilty as anyone else for going off thread.

Can we have a little less preach & alot more practice? THANK YOU!

:rofl38::hehetable:tongueout

If there is an 'inner Mafia' @ Accyweb then I am not a member of it . (every time I post I hope that it is worth reading), if others are not free to comment on what I or others say then we can't improve the style of what we are posting. (It's all one big learning curve for all of us).

I agree completly with the sentiments that you have portrayed in the above & though I often go straight to read the latest out-pourings from A-B, I also try to read the contributions from all other members, (even though they may not have Bobs gift of expression their views are just as valid).

If you had not commented on the thread then I would not have been given the chance to think of the accyweb anti-meandering threads, thread.
Which has surprised me in it's popularity, can I just emphasise that it was not a dig at you but yet another silly thread that I have started.
Please do not read too much into anything that I may post as I will always try to produce a tangent to the thread that, is the way my mind works.

Lots & lots of friendly smilies to you, all my Luv' Less.

As you must have noticed THOTH, a moderator had posted in the thread you refer to. He had posted a light-hearted mild rebuke and a slightly tongue-in-cheek "I've got my eye on you lot so behave yourselves!" comment. The very fact that no action was taken means that he didn't feel it necessary to take any. The meander didn't need reporting in that particular case.

In your browsings haven't you also come across instances where moderators have asked people to either click on the report button or send a PM if they have cause for complaint?

Inner Mafia? Crikey I didn't know we'd got one of those! Where's Elliot Ness. (sorry) I suppose as in all groups the founder members or those who meet up at the "dos" probably feel a kinship with each other and if it seems like someone that they/we haven't got to know yet misjudges the manner and intent of someone we know to have meant no harm then we are likely to want to say something in their defence by way of an explanation. It doesn't meant that any valid criticism would be resented but maybe we just don't go in for crtiticism all that much anyway apart from when we're having a humerous dig at each other. That's part of what makes this board a pleasant place to visit.

Most threads will wander a bit, but then when you are having a conversation with someone that happens too.....it does lead to interesting posts, and I really value and enjoy some of the light heartedness that is captured on this site.
Most of us come on this site to get some respite from the hassles that occur in our daily lives......and for some it may be the only social contact they have.
I have never seen any evidence of an inner mafia.....and personally I think the moderators do a grand job.

Think the mods do a great job on this board, and I think the people who post on here tend to moderate themselves, whilst threads may wander a little, they always seem to come back on track sooner or later. This is unlike another board I post on from time to time, they have mods, and what they call tutorial members, and you can be sure that one or the other will reply to any thread on what ever topic, just like they are wanting to "show off" their knowledge.

Keep up the good work mods, and members keep the good topics going.

Thanks Less- made me think for a chang.

Being interested in Statistics ( and other things ) I wonder if a record was broken in approx 3 1/2 hours from 9-32 yesterday. I refer to the number of postings in the Thread initiated by Fireman on a real serious topic.

I also wonder if Fireman was called out on duty as he was pipped at the post (I think so anyway. My counting may be impaired because of a slight attack of SpinalMcGuinness this morning.). Where was I ? Oh yes -- congrats to Tinkerbelle with a magnificent total of 28.

The bronze I will award to Chav1.

And dear oh dear Willow -- you are certainly slipping.

Have just realised that perhaps I should have started another Thread but can`t be bothered to do it all again, and don`t understand the business of "Copy & Paste".

I really pity you THOTH, that was an attempt at cheering poor Fireman up, humour and laughter are always the best medicine. When i first came on accyweb i was told off by a moderator for some inappropriate posts and many people told me at the time to be myself so that's exactly what i will do. As like Less and many others on this forum I try to inject humour into my posts, you may not find them funny but humour is a personal thing. I have met a good bunch of people on this forum and some of these people share my sense of humour, but when the need calls i can also hold a sensible and literate debate. You may at any time report me to the moderators for any inappropriate posts as it is them that moderate this forum and what can be posted, not you!

It looks like my views are not shared about reporting inappropriate posts - I am now apparently a 'grass'!

I (obviously) don't know who it was, but if you think it was recent, it wasn't - it was very soon after I joined.

My advice of the day is, report all posts you think inappropriate, but don't admit to the fact!

Or if you do, expect to lose karma!!!

In my capacity as Chairman of the Doug and Sandra Hayes Fan Club can I just point out that any suggestion of Mafia involvement in this board would be looked on with grave disapproval by our much respected Crime Czars and could well result in in a severe hand-wringing and finger-wagging. I am sure that Councillor Doug Hayes, (108), would be the first to encourage everyone to report everyone else to the moderators and /or Scotland Yard, irrespective of whether an offence has been committed or not, purely in the interests of public safety of course but also with an eye to star billing in next weeks Observer. Could I also point out that the habit of wandering in threads should be always be treated with sensitivity and compassion, after all, though Doug has clearly been wandering for years, people who do wander can often still perform a useful function as Doug does in drawing public attention from the mess that the Idiot in Chief makes. I

In conclusion could I ask members to pick up their litter and place it in the recepticles provided and present them at the kerbside, ready for collection on the appointed day.

Thank you.

Can we be sure to point out that the Doug you are referring to is not the Doug who wanders about on here. I wouldn't to be confused with the other Doug, as the other Doug is not me. I hope I've been able to clear that up.

Thank You.

Oh absolutely! It goes without saying that the Doug I was referring to in my last post as "wandering for years" is not the Doug who has been wandering here, if he were that Doug which he very obviously isn't, but if he were then I rather think that he would not be able to make as much sense as the Doug who does wander around on here, since that Doug is clearly compos mentis while the other Doug who also wanders, but not on here, so very clearly isn't.

Does that clear the matter up?

Hey Doug, we all know that you're not the Doug refered to in the a-b post, no need to worry on that score, that Doug does wander and wonder, but I must say that, that Doug must have good ears and eyesight (from previous articles in our local paper..........the O) that Doug commented on things that he could not hear or see, now I am

Just to add that some people get upset if you don't agree on something,I'm not botherd if you don't share my views on things it's boring if we all enjoy and agree on everything. So in my case I tend to post away and if you read it thats even better!

I wouldn't use the word "mafia" but with any message board there is bound to be an inner core of founder members who by very virtue of having known each other longer know each other better. It also seems in the case of this board that most of the founder members are either friends and relatives of the board creator, or friends of those friends and relatives and naturally they will appear to relate more closely to each other.

I wouldn't say that I have noticed any criticism being resented, apart from one occasion when I objected to what I felt had been heavy handedness by a moderator and I lost karma points for saying as much.

At the end of the day THOTH you have chosen to join someone's message board and like it or not the onus is on you to adapt to the ways of the board rather than expect the board to adapt to you. (similar to opinions expressed elsewhere regarding immigrants to this country)

People aren't perfect but this is one of the better message boards I have come across and as such I enjoy returning to read and contribute. If a point I make goes unnoticed so be it. If a question I ask goes unanswered then I may well ask again or I may simply assume that there is no answer forthcoming and move on.

I think Vorlon meant that WW3 can be in danger of starting if people complain about threads/posts in the open, on the board instead of quietly consulting a moderator and thus hopefully avoiding unnecessary conflict.

We shouldn't be afraid to complain or at lease debate between ourselves. If a thread is unfair or degrading it should be reported and be held in confidence, If however, individuals choose to discuss, debate or argue there points of view then we should be prepared to uphold that right. Very few of us have escaped criticism when we have asserted ourselves and opinions, its called life. If we are to avoid unnecessary conflict then respect the opinion of other in the same way as you yourselves seek respect for your own.:)

lol my post 56 was referring to Pixie's quotation from Voltaire, not what Doug said.

But on the subject of your post Doug I agree that a bit of good healthy debate never went amaiss if people can refrain from insulting each other or taking offence. However I can also understand why moderators prefer to have some things said in confidence so that they can perhaps then have a quiet word with the person in question and avoid unnecessary problems.
