Legally if the cheque was intended for you you should have asked the issuer to make out a new one with your name on. If the cheque was intended for the business and you deposited it to a personal account you have committed a fraud. The fact that the bank allowed you to do this merely indicates to me that there are a lot of unqualified people working for banks nowadays but considering most banks made the majority of their senior staff redundant when they "downsized" a few years ago that shouldn't really come as a surprise.
