Hindle Genealogy Help Request
 

I am from the US and have never been to Accrington. I just received some birth and marriage certificates from National Statistics indicating that my Hindle ancestors were from Accrington, and would like some help understanding the information.

According to the marriage certificate, Christopher Hindle (son of Henry) and Hannah Stringer (daughter of William) were married "at the Parochial Chapel in the Chapelry of Accrington in the County of Lancaster" on June 2, 1850.

1. What does this mean? I assume that this is a reference to Church of England since no denomination is listed, correct?
2. If so, can one tell which parish from this description? My references from the www.genuki.org.uk web site indicate that at least St. James on Cannon St. and Christ Church on Manchester Rd. were established before 1850. Perhaps there were others?

An additional piece of information that might help - According to the birth certificates for 2 of their children, they lived at 25 Nuttall Street.

1. Out of curiosity, does this address still exist and is it residential (perhaps the structure from 1850)?

Finally, I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they might be related to me based on the above information.

i was at Accy grammar school in40's-50's aboy called?Hindle discovered he was a direct descendant of Catherine Stewart,3'rd wife of Henryviii.

Hi, I was a Hindle before marriage and have done some of my family tree, so if you need any help just ask. The church is St James Church of Accrington - "bells now beginning to ring" - this is a shot in the dark, but .. do you have Dobsons on your tree too, cos I really think we may be on the same line, in fact, I am more or less certain.

Thank you for the reply with the photo of St. James, June. I have just discovered a listing of my Hindle ancestors on the LDS web site and it also explicitly stated that the marriage was St. James as you indicated. I am not presently aware of any Dobsons in my tree at this time, but I am just beginning my research in the UK.

Are you from Pennslyvania by an chance? Any Sleigh's on your tree as well?

Yes, William Entwistle (b:1848) married Nancy Entwistle (b:1853) in Pennsylvania in 1870. I have a record of them having 7 children. I have no record of any Sleighs.

The Hindles I knew in Accrington owned a timber mill. I remember you could see it from the train as it approached Accrington from the Blackburn area. The man who owned the mill was called Thomas Hindle I believe. I went to school at St. John's Baxenden with two of their sons and one of their daughters. They lived at Browfield House in Baxenden, pretty posh really with about 5 or 6 acres of land. The sons were called William and Thomas and the daughter was called Sylvia. I think there may have been a younger daughter also but I cannot remember her name. Their parents eventually divorced round about 1956/7 or so and the mother and the children moved to Broadfield Rd. somewhere off Willows Lane when Browfield House was sold. William would probably be about 58 or 59 now, Thomas around 62 or 63 and Sylvia would be around 61 same age as I.

I believe that Sylvia moved to Canada but I can find no real confirmation of this. I would be delighted to hear from any of them if anyone knows where they are, especially Sylvia as I was madly in love with her when I was nine years old!

Christopher Hindle and William Entwistle are my gr grandfathers. There are also Sleighs in my genealogy tree. Seeking more information on Christopher's father Henry to trace the family back through the years. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks for your note. Based on some exchanges with Atarah, I have evidence of Sleigh ancestors in my family tree. Based on this, I believe we have common ancestors. FYI, Christopher's father was Henry, and his father was Christopher.

I have a lot of Sleighs on my family tree including the dentists of Accy. This family originated from Derbyshire & Staffordshire before going to Ireland with William of Orange circa 1690. For obvious reasons they weren't too pop with the natives and most had fled to Lancashire by 1800. Great X 3 grandfather, Horatio turned up in Lancaster in 1799, married and had one son, Ralph, the father of my great grandfather, Thomas whose brother William Horatio was the oldest practicing dentist in Lancashire just before he died aged 80 in Winwick Asylum! His son, Randolph was the founder of the Accy dentistry practice.
There are at least two members of the family who achieved a little fame - Colonel (Prince Edward Militia in 1852) Burrowes Willcocks Arthur Sleigh who founded The Daily Telegraph in 1855 (an unsuccessful venture for him but which made a bob or two for the Levy family to whom he sold it!) and Captain Adderley Willcocks Sleigh who became Chief Sureintendent of Police in Manchester in 1840.
Whilst in full flow, my two maternal great grandfathers have strong Accy connections - James Preston (1848 - 1934) born Moscow, Ozzy and Edmund Whittaker (1851 - ?) born Clayton le Moors.
The latter became the first Town Clerk of Accrington in 1878 and "resigned" under a cloud in 1885. Despite the best efforts of the library and other sleuths, I have never been able to discover what happened to him. The council minutes appear to have gone missing from the period and I suspect a major cover up UNLESS SOMEONE OUT THERE KNOWS DIFFERENT. Any thoughts please?

My research is basically Entwistle and Hindle, however, you may want to get in touch with someone here in the US that has done research on the Sleighs. His address is [email protected]. Leland has done a lot on the Sleigh family that resided in Barnesboro, PA. Dorinda Entwistle (a great aunt) married John Sleigh and that is how I am related. I do not know how much information Leland has, but do know that he has a Joseph Sleigh, born 1829 in England and died in RAinow, Cheshire, England. I really did not pursue the Sleigh line. Does anyone know of any Catlows from Oswaldtwistle, I am searching my family tree, looking for John Catlow who was a blacksmith around 1870, John had a daughter named Mary Alice Catlow who married James Delaney at St Johns Baxenden in 1879.

Any information would be gladly welcome.
