World War One Soldier
 

I have a poser.
George Armstrong who served in the R.F.A., during the first world war
was recorded in 1918 as living in Richmond Hill St, Accrington.
He was discharged February 1920, his address then was given as 22 Myelia St, Accrington.

That is a street I have never heard of, can't find it in any old directories.

Please no silly chit chat, of I don't knows, or never heard of it.

it could be lydia st. the 'e l' could be a 'd' but the 'm' doesnt look like a L does it....:(

I think thats probably it!!
Melia as a street name is popular here in the north. This guy could possibly have not even lived there and was unsure of the spelling.
Sometimes the wives of soldiers, sailors and air force guys would move to different houses after their marriage, or after having a child and then inform their husbands of the move. The women had to do it alone because a lot of the time their partners were only home long enough for the wedding day or had a weeks leave and spent most of that time getting back just to spend a day with their family.
So I think its probably Melia Street.

Many thanks for your replies to my query.

As the address is given as nu 22, I don't think its a square, that would occupy a lot of space and would be well known.

I will go along with it having been written Myelia, by a cloth eared clerk who didn't understand a Lanky dialect.

The suggestion that it is Melia St, OK, but where was such a street in Accy with so many houses. I've been collecting odd street, yards, courts, terraces, folds and square names in Accy for donkeys years, never come across the name.

I'm going to try the Burgess Rolls for 1922, and see if I can find him.

I am sure there used to be a Melia street in Acccrington I think its now Knocked.

Never, having served in the Fire Brigade for 30 years I knew all the streets for miles around, and having researched the history of Accrington for even longer, I have never come across a Myelia or Amelia St or Squ.

This query has been ongoing for some time now with no satisfactory answer. I ask could Panther be right about it being Lydia Street? I ask this because the writer of both addresses writes with a clear hand, but if he or she was copying the new address which was already written down (by someone else) and it hadn't been written clearly, the writer wrote what he or she thought that they saw. Melia is a familiar name to some of us, I seem to remember a market stall called "Melia's" from many years ago, but like everyone else I can't place a Melia Street.
