Barnes rellies

Joseph Barnes was my great great great grandfather. Born in 1787 in Church, I believe he owned many coalmines and mills, including all of the Oakenshaw land and it is he who the square is named for. He married Mary Grimshaw and I am descended through his daughter Catherine and John Greenwood. These had children who all went off to Argentina, but my grandfather John Edwin was returned to Lancs in the early 20th century. I am a first gen New Zealander, never been to UK but would love to know more about the Barnes if anyone knows more.:)

Hi smacdonald and welcome to Accy Web.

If your interested in Clayton, then you should try to obtain copy of the History of Clayton le Moors, it will tell you a about the Barnes's and Grimshaws, I think there are family trees as well.

Retlaw.

Thanks for your help already! Not much history over 150 years out here in NZ so find it interesting. Hope you're all having a great summer, of course we buried in winter so envious.

Hey Retlaw thanks so much for that piece on Joseph Barnes! Got a photo of his portrait with chimneys smoking away behind and a mill, never knew where it was till recently. Might go have a look one day. Chap I work with here in NZ from Accrington, small world. Take care. Great site by the way.

Hi there,
I hope you get this, as I am related to the same Barnes families as yourself.
My ancestor Jacob Barnes was indeed your Joseph Barnes's brother.
I have a lot of family history relating to both Joseph and of course the other siblings.
Would enjoy sharing with you our mutual Barnes interests.

Cheers,
Robyn
