SALE: Website

It is with great regret that I will very shortly have to part company with RewindLancs (RewindLancs - Lancashire Discussion Forum, Blogs and Photo Gallery). I have just started a new job and it's taking up LOTS more of my previously spare time than I thought.

You can access various statistics relating to the site at: -

The hosting and domain fees are paid until Jan 2008, then it works out at about £50 per annum to host the site.

Please PM me with any serious offers. I would take £500 which is a fantastic price for a fully featured, established website that somebody can really start to develop further.

Before i ask my question id just like to say im NOT being nasty in anyway its just something id like ansering...

Why would anyone want to pay that much for a website like that one? What gain would they get at all and why is it that much? Thank you.

Some people enjoy running community websites and get a lot out of providing a facility for others to meet, discuss, etc, etc.

As any owner of community sites will tell you, the amount of time that goes into developing them is significant and you do need a certain level of skill and expertise as well. The site across at RewindLancs has been heavily modified by my partner over many long and late hours.

So yes, you are also right, there probably isn't any commercial gain for the new owner but equally you can't just give something away for free.

To close, if you went to a web design agency and asked them to build you a site with the features that RewindLancs has to offer, you would be running into many thousands of pounds.

Thousands? make that hundreds of thousands but, only if I was Hyndburn Borough Council and wanted a website like Hyndburnlife. ;)

Otherwise I would find a cheaper way to do it and spend the hours building and modifying a site for myself. That would have to be more satisfying than buying it off the shelf, If I wanted to run a community site that is, as it is I'll continue posting and getting into trouble on here thanks.:)

If its been heavily modified how does that work in terms of upgrading software for somebody not familiar with what updates have been applied?

suzster 11-11-2007 15:46

Re: SALE: Website

The core software will upgrade by running the upgrade file from the admin section. The mods wont effect this.

Re: SALE: Website

OK, I've had a few PMs about this site for sale so to save myself typing it all again here it is.

Its a forum running SMF forum software. Its up to date as in the latest release. Running a site like this will take some cash (Hosting fees and bandwidth dependant use) but shouldn't be excessive to start with. You can get some revenue back from click throughs on Google ads but I doubt it will ever be totally self funding and certainly not an 'investment'

To continue running it you have two options. As its heavily modded you can just keep applying the core security patches and you'll be fine. This is a simple task. IF however a patch is not compatible with something that has been modded then you may have a problem depending on your ability to code in PHP. The second option is strictly for those who can code PHP. That is you take on a reasoably mature bit of code and take it to where you want it to go. This is extremely time consuming to do properly

Do I think its worth it? Sorry Suze but NO I don't. The time you have spent doing all these mods unfortunately will never translate into returns. It has a massive established competitor in Accyweb and looking around its the same people on both sites (Look at the most prolific posters, they are pretty much all from here) and its only 5K posts in its life is not what I would call established.

If your bored, have £200 to throw away and want something to pass time learning PHP etc then its your money do what you like. You should ask yourself what you would do if you make a mess of the codebase and don't have the skills to bring it back. You will quickly burn another 250 quid paying someone who does have a clue to sort it out.

This is the first time I'll ever put this on a post

"The above are my PERSONAL opinions, You may of course have a different view of the world and are entitled to that just as I am mine. I have been asked by a few people now for mine so there it is"
