fish and chip shop
the new fish and chip shop in corronation street serves chips in newspaper
wish our chippy still did but europe put the brakes on that :( |
Re: fish and chip shop
Maybe they haven't been told yet or its the MEN getting some sneaky advertising in!{product placement and all that!**
|
Re: fish and chip shop
Given the content of some of the newspapers that I've seen, they are more suited to wrapping chips than reading. Of course, it is a bit upsetting when the ink transfers so badly that you can read the mirror image on the chips!
|
Re: fish and chip shop
I dont know why they banned newspaper, the chips are wrapped first in normal chippy paper anyway, or were when we had a chippy, they dont taste the same in those trays.
|
Re: fish and chip shop
funny how they dont allow chips to be served in news paper because of health issues yet arnt too bothered about what chemicals go into our food
|
Re: fish and chip shop
While I'm sure that the amounts you ingest are relatvely small, there are probably chemmicals in the inks that you are better off leaving on the newsprint.
|
Re: fish and chip shop
well all i can say is i never once heard of anyone getting ill from it and the only reason it got stopped was because some twit in europe said somone could get ill from it
people who lick their fingers to turn newspaper pages dont just drop dead whiole reading the paper lol the news paper never touched the chips but the heat from the chips gave off an aroma that smelt so damn good i suppose you have to be old enough to remember it the younger folk just wont understand lol |
Re: fish and chip shop
Actually i worked over here in a factory that supplied ink to Newspapers.Black ink was mostly comprimised of Oil and coal. Not many chemicals went in to it.White print had ammonia in it

Re: fish and chip shop
How on earth does the aroma of the chips increase if they are wrapped in newspaper?
The chips l get are wrapped in plain paper and smell just fine. It's also good because l don't leave inky fingerprints on everything l touch. ;) Wasn't it nice in the good old days when the earth was flat? Ah, nostalgia- rickets, children in the mills, workhouses, chips in newspaper. |
Re: fish and chip shop
i didnt say the chips aroma increased
i was trying to say the heat from the chips made the newspaper give of an aroma that when cobined with the smell of the chips was very nice indeed i swear these nutcases will one day have us living in such a sterile enviroment that no one will have any immune system to fight of disseases a bit of dirt never hurt anyone unless that bit of dirt was plutonium :-) |
Re: fish and chip shop
Back in those days I don't think the ink came off the newspapers the same as it does now. I never remember having inky fingers, and yes I know exactly what you mean by the aroma given out by a hot bundle of chips in newspaper. It sort of came through the paper in a way that it doesn't come through the paper we get chips in these days.
And while we're talking about chip paper, why is it that the little bit of paper they put right next to the chips and fish sticks to them and brings all the batter off the fish but where they touch the other paper (because the small piece is so small it doesn't cover everything) nothing sticks? Why then do we need that little piece? It sticks to the tops of steak puddings too and sometimes even pulls the tops off! |
Re: fish and chip shop
l think the old ink was more likely to come off, posh people had their servants iron their paper so it didn't happen.
Was much better for getting your windows to shine though. |

Anyone remember Len's chippy, just off willows lane. Best chips and fish by far. |
Re: fish and chip shop
I remember Len's chippy, damn fine stuff. But I always found him a bit intimidating, consequently, I always behaved myself in his shop.

I wouldn't have liked to have travelled too far carrying chips, peas and mushy peas wrapped only in newspaper, in pre carton/ tray days. :)
|
Re: fish and chip shop
YUK! can't think of anything worse...........all those newspapers read by people on the bog then your food wrapped in it................nice!...........NOT!
|
Re: fish and chip shop
it could be worse if you happen to get page 3
|
Re: fish and chip shop
I remember Lens too.First time i was there with my father i made the mistake of wanting potato pie and chips.Len told me if i wanted a pie to go to a pie shop or bakery.I was only 12 and felt an idiot.Best fish and chips around though.
|
Re: fish and chip shop
I remember chips wrapped in news paper and they did smell different.
And i tell you what you would get more chips when they popped them in paper now you barely get the carton covered. And if you want pie and chips you only get less than half a portion of chips but still pay the price for the full portion. Bye Eck prices these day eh i tell ya!! |

If anyone feels so passionate about chips in newspaper, they could always wrap 'em up in the Express, or whatever, when they get them home.

The funniest story ever although he has always denied it, was when Peter 'Mandy' Mandelson first became MP for Hartlepool. On showing he was a man of the people he went into the chippy and ordered fish and chips and a portion of that delicious looking guacamole, which he was told was mushy peas!! You can take the man out of Hamstead but you can't make him eat mushy peas. :) |

Re: fish and chip shop
Lucky Accrington folks, having decent chippies available! While we can occasionally get something that masquerades as fish and chips here in the USA, there are **zero** UK-style chippies. I have had to learn to make my own, which is a lot of mess in the kitchen. My nephews, however, really appreciate the effort!
I can also go to a local Irish pub (not one of those Irish-themed pubs you seem to be getting in the UK) which serves very decent food. They have a "Dublin-style" fish and chips on the menu, which isn't quite the same thing (and only one type of fish), but quite tasty just the same. At least they have the good sense to serve malt vinegar and not tomato catsup. Note: I can hear the AccyWebbers hissing and booing even at this distance, but have pity on those of us without a proper chippy! |
Re: fish and chip shop
Well Billcat maybe you could open one up and introduce the people on the other side of the Atlantic how to eat cook and speak proper English LOL! Just having a dig here.
|
Re: fish and chip shop
True English fish and chip shops for expatriates that could make someone a lot of money lol!

Part of the problem may be that a lot of Americans just are not big fish eaters. |
Re: fish and chip shop
I have been going to the chippy at the bottom of feilding lane for a while now.....STAR EAST I highly RECOMMEND it. Not only is the food tasty it is also good price wise.
|
Re: fish and chip shop
The fish are very nice at the one next to the Marlborough club at Oaklea. My onlt critisism is the price. What used to be classed as a cheap meal is now an expensive treat.

Re: fish and chip shop
One more note - the fish and chips at Treacher's and Long John Silvers were not very good. Better than none at all, but that's about the most that could be said for it (and you could not even say that for some of the shops). I believe that a lot of the American public has come to believe that these mediocre products are pretty much the standard for fish and chips. It would take a lot to overcome this low opinion of fish and chips!
If I had not been to some very fine chippies in the UK, I might be just as misinformed. |

Will agree on you with that one Slinky.Bottom of Fielding lane is good.Wife has told me that you cannot beat the one in town on Church Street.
Best fried fish i had in the U.S.A. was in Denni's.Only thing missing was the batter. It literally was fried fish. |
