Sunbeds...

I'm not a tanned lass but after seeing all the sun over the weekend I thought I'd try a few minutes on a sunbed. When I asked the woman she said to me, Just go on for six minutes. I thought she was taking the p**s out of me. SIX MINUTES! How short is that. Anyway on I went and when I got off i didn't feel any different.

That was this afternoon. Now I look like a bloody lobster just been cooked. Can't believe the difference six minutes has made. Why is it I burn so much yet some people go on everyday and just tan?

There so powerful nowadays, gone are the times when you had to go on 30 minutes minimum. Just think steph in a couple of days you'll have be a nice brown lobster or a peeling one!!! :o

Steph please be carefull !! i had a friend that went on a sunbed only once she had a mole on her shoulder and it turned cancerous after sadly she died of it .

Re: Sunbeds...

got to agree 100% with mick steph, they are dangerous.

WillowTheWhisp 21-06-2005 08:36

Re: Sunbeds...

Sunbeds are a highly speeded up version of "tanning"(for which read "cooking yourself under sunlight").If the sun affect you badly then a sunbed will do only more so. Did you use any cream/lotion/spray as you would have done if sunbathing outdoors? Remember we are advised to use at least SF15 at first. Have you seen the Boots ads?

Awful what appened to your friend Mick. Anyone with moles should be careful of the sun and sunbeds. Both can cause skin cancer.

:D Try a sun shower next time Steph they are even better, quicker and a more even tan and you don't get no white stripe labels down the sides of your bod  !

When there is a shortagen of real sun I'm off for 9 minutes of sun shower fantasy that I'm led on a Spanish beach, only thing is there's no sexy Spanish waiter to bring me a cold beer in the tanning shops :( !

Re: Sunbeds...

I haven't been on a sunbed for years but I do know that they are so powerful now that a few minutes is enough. I am fair skinned and I will tan but only with care. If I burn I've had it. You do need to wear some kind of protective cream on sunbeds now. They tend to do their own creams at tanning shops as they used to reckon that using normal SPF doesn't protect on a sunbed or may cause rashes.. and I reckon it's so that they can charge you an extra quid for the cream..:D

I would keep off the sunbed Steph. It's not worth looking like a lobster in order to try to get a tan. I would rather be pale and interesting than brown and wrinkly...:)

Re: Sunbeds...

they would have to pay me to use a sunbed.........If I wanted to look tanned for a special occasion then I would have one of those spray on jobs done.......no fried and peeling skin after one of those.

What's a sun shower? I must be behind the times. I've never heard of them.

I went to Turkey a couple of years ago. I used SPF50 went out on a boat & came back like a lobster. I used the same lotion as my little'un & he was fine!!! It depends on your skin type.

Like a big walk in sun bed room were you stand up instead of lieing down.

I also agree sunbeds and sun showers aren't the healthiest of things but I don't suit milk bottle white, so I'll cream up well and keep using them and worry about the effects when I'm old and wrinkly!

WillowTheWhisp 21-06-2005 14:58

Re: Sunbeds...

I'm already old and wrinkly so I'm past worrying by now. :D

Old and wrinkly comes a lot sooner than you think.......and believe me, when it does come.....you don't like it! Well, I don't anyway.

Re: Sunbeds...

I prefer to stay pale and interesting. If I am ever tempted by sunbeds, I just look at 'before and after' pictures of Brigette Bardot (sp?). I probably don't look right being so pale, but I wuldn't look right being haggard and wrinkly before my time either.:)

Debbie J 21-06-2005 15:27

Re: Sunbeds...

My neighbours must think I'm strange because I don't sit out in the sun the minute it appears. I prefer to stay indoors with all the windows open. I have burnt too many times & learned my lesson

lettie 21-06-2005 15:38

Re: Sunbeds...

I love to sit in the sun and hate being cold. I really shouldn't be living in this country. I do take care to cover myself in some good suncream factor 15 and above. When abroad I will usually get under a sunshade for a while.:D I tend to find that suncreams make good moisturisers and always wear SPF 15 on my face, even in winter, or a moisturiser containing SPF.

Re: Sunbeds...

I got a decent tan in Spain recently but I always put cream on;and a tan intensifier by Piz Buin;it's expensive but keeps the tan for longer and moisturises too.My daughter had factor 60 on some days;20 and 25 on other and still her scalp got burnt when she was in the pool. Not much you can do about that really as her hat kept floating off!

I have a load of sunbed sessions that a mate bought me for Xmas,I will use them eventualy but it's not the same as a good bask!

Steph 22-06-2005 14:09

Re: Sunbeds...

Well i must say my arms are looking pretty tanned with the sun around but after being on the sunbed my chest is a bit sore and a bit red. That'll teach me.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend mick, you never really think about the consequences until it happens.

I didn't have any lotion or cream on cos it never occured to me but if I were to go on the sunbed or sun shower again then I will make sure I use sun lotion.

Thanks for all the advice
