Ntl...
NTL offered me a great deal on my phone line and internet connection. Being so naive I took it only to find that my bill gets higher every month. I know its not phone calls. Whats that all about?
|
Re: Ntl...
Sorry Steph but that's NTL for you, a law of their own, You will never get a straight answer out of them either!!!
|
Re: Ntl...
ive recently left ntl after 5 years with them
bulldog 8mb internet and phoneline £30 a month |
Re: Ntl...
Another rip off lot are One Tel. Phone bill went thru roof & cheeky sods tried to charge me for two months internet connection after I had cancelled. Been with Carphone Warehouse Talk Talk & halfed bills even with a business line. Never had a problem since the start + calls between customers are free anytime.
|
Re: Ntl...
somebody from them came to our door canvassing a couple of nights ago- i said not bothered what my phone bill is i can afford it and can't be bothered to save money-utter crap but it gets rid of em lol
|
Re: Ntl...
We had one of those gas companies on our doorstep the other day, canvassing for business. We told them that we were in the process of transferring it to another company, and he totally surprised us by telling us that the company we were going to couldn't be beaten!
We were stunned! |

Re: Ntl...
The Utility Warehouse.
They do phones and other things as well, plus if you get your friends and family involved on the telephone side of things, all calls between you are free. I think Talk Talk do the same sort of thing. PM me if you want a contact number. |
Re: Ntl...
Well i give up with the whole money saving thing. It never works for me
|
Re: Ntl...
I know what you mean there Steph. Everytime I've changed gas/electricity/phone whatever the cheaper bills don't last very long then I seem to end up worse off than ever before.
I've been on AOL for ages. A lot of people knock it but there were a few things I felt were in it's favour, one being the free helpline. I also enjoy the live quizzes in specially designated chatrooms. However, in a move quite out of character, we are about to defect. Since Busman moved into the same house and we have 3 PC's here now (mine, his and the kids') we decided that networking was the only solution to all of us getting online (the kids can fight it out between themselves for their PC) We've tried to get sense out of AOL as to what equipment they recommend and also tried to get sense out of providers of such equipment but as soon as you mention AOL there is a sharp intake of breath. Even so we were determined not to be deterred. However, now it seems that as of July 1st they are going to start charging for the helplines and since they outsourced them to India and it's difficult to make yourself understood never mind understand their replies those calls can end up dragging on and on. So that swung the balance a little further away from AOL. If the only things now in its favour are the quizzes I think I can learn to live without them. We're defecting to Bulldog, full package, broadband, network and phone line with unlimited landline calls anytime. (Even cheaoper rates to mobiles and abroad). Of course we'll have to experience it to know if it's really worth it but it sounds good. |
Re: Ntl...
Vorlon,
The system you are on about is Talk talk. Bet you mean Carphone Warehouse as my link above. Every company that rings me re phone lines put the phone down when I tell them I am signed with them. They are confident enough to put up a £1000.00 bond that they can't be beaten-my bills havent been better since joining them + free phone calls for subscriber to subscriber. |
Re: Ntl...
Willow, If you want a hand with sorting out teh network give me a shout, I'll tell you what you need etc and pop round to show you how to set it al up.
Ian |
Re: Ntl...
Thanks Ian. :) We haven't got the gubbins yet but it's ordered through Bulldog. Never having done this before we might be grateful for a bit of knowledgable assistance.
|
Re: Ntl...
We have switched from NTL broadband to Bulldog and we have had no problems so far Willow.:)
|
Re: Ntl...
Did you manage OK setting up your network?
|
Re: Ntl...
T'other half did all that!:D
I don't think he struggled - if he did , he didn't say anything and its not like him to suffer in silence, so no I don't think there were any problems. |
Re: Ntl...
Networks are dead easy once you understand sub nets and routes.

PM me if you want a contact number.[/QUOTE]
I hope that's not a blatanet offering of your own phone number? 'Cause if it is, PM me for my current rates for that srt of service.:) |
Re: Ntl...
Whats this bulldog that everybody keeps talking about. Is it worth it?
|
Re: Ntl...
Fast Broadband, Up to 8M. Only drawback if it is one is that you need to move your calls from BT to their package as well to get the 'deal'
|
Re: Ntl...
a lot of adsl modems cant handle the 8mb connection
buy the lnksys wireless-g adsl modem if you buy at commet in blackburn yiu get a free wireles card for your pc as well although you can just use a network cable if you want |
Re: Ntl...
ok cheers for that
|
Re: Ntl...
We're supposed to be getting a router as part of our deal.
Although we are changeing over to Bulldog for phone calls too I don't think you have to. There seem to be different variations on the theme. We were told it doesn't mean changeing our phone number. It will mean losing our aol email addresses and just when I've had a load of business cards printed with mine on! I should have used a different one for that. We've had notification that it's all systems go so just waiting now until some gubbins arrives. |
Re: Ntl...
Willow, For anyone doing 'business' through an email address I would recommend getting your own domain with email forwarding. That way should you ever switch supplier again you just up-date the route to address and no one knows you have changed.
It costs from about £1/month for this service. Ian |
Re: Ntl...
When I ever get round to doing a decent website I might just do that.
Speed I'm going - mainly because I have fifty million other thngs to do - that could be sometime next century! :D |

What about downloads, what speed do you get please? I ask because I am thinking of leaving Pipex after they suspended my account for 'illegal' activity the other week. |

Oh yes Neil? What sort of naughty things have you been up to this time? :)

So now I am being a good boy. I have even closed down my Direct Connect hub. The silly thing is my up and download levels have been about 20 gig a month or more for the last 3 years with the hub running and they never complained about that. |
Re: Ntl...
when using p2p networks always use a program called peerguardian ( google it ) as it stops these companies from connecting to you
i dont use that crap myself but no matter what your reasons are or what excuses you use if you are using p2p then you are doing illigal activity lol you may be able to kid the isp but you aint fooling me lol you did however get lucky as quite a lot of people including children ( parents get the bill ) are recieving fines and going to court from been caught on programs like kazza , direct connect , torrents and other p2p networks this may be of interest to you http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4627679.stm filesharing may soon be dead sorry to go aff topic but it has been ruled that people who make file sharing programs are legaly responsible for what their users do with the software if that is the case should a gun company be responsible for what people do with guns and if i was ever stabbed with a stanley knife could i sue the comany who made the knife |
Re: Ntl...
I also get around 890Kb/s max when downloading (however you won't get this on p2p networks as it depends how fast the other people can download... I use newsgroups, max speed downloads :p)
But it depends how far away from the exchange you live as to what speed you will get. I live across from the first park gates on lower manchester road... the exchange is next to where people catch buses to Huncoat in town. By the way, make sure you write down all the details you will need *before* they disconnect you lol.. I forgot and had hell trying to get through to their customer support to find my username/pw (I eventualy phoned sales about 10times until somebody would help me as customer service is impossible to get through to) I'm *told* newsgroups are anonymous, I use giganews.com newservers it's something like £12 a month for unlimited downloads :) edit: Yup.. good example chav, another one is video recorders, I think it was Sony who got took to court or whatever because people could record things they shouldnt. The court basicly said that Sony wernt liable for what the customers did with them... up until now that case has been refered to during p2p cases, not anymore I guess! :( All in the land of the free ;) |
Re: Ntl...
peerguardian did not help mate. My ISP sent me a copy of the letter they received. I checked the IP that took the file from me. It was a Swedish broadband IP. That means that a company was using a broadband connection to catch people out. This is a way around peerguardian type programs. You are not safe :D
|
Re: Ntl...
i am coz i dont use p2p lol
|
Re: Ntl...
Video recording is a funny subject. I mean they make video recorders so that you can record from the TV ......... legal or illegal? I've recorded many things from TV because I wasn't going to be here and didn't want to miss them. I have watched them later but then not erased the tape. I've watched them more than once. Is that illegal? I have even lent them to someone else (members of AccyWeb) who hadn't seen the program on TV. Is that legal?
I know what you're saying about peer to peer but if they are sharing something which isn't commercially available is that still illegal? I know the record companies' point of view relates to the loss of royalties when things are pirated and I do understand that point. I was talking to someone yesterday who has made a Michael Jackson tribute website and used some illustrations of the album covers when referring to those albums. Is that wrong from a copyright point of view? She didn't think so because the official MJ website has praised her effort. |

Re: Ntl...
uknova.com only allow stuff which isn't commericaly available e.g Corrie..
are you sure its ilegal neil, and not a legal grey area? |
Re: Ntl...
Yes...........
|
Re: Ntl...
uknova is just a torrent tracker anyway, so in theory they aren't actually doing anything illegal (as long as they don't use the servers for seeding).
However, sharing an episode of corrie is definately illegal as all tv shows are copyrighted. |
Re: Ntl...
Ah I see. I guess the owners can just live with themselves knowing that nothings being shared that can be bought. :p
Tracker... well.. we all know other major trackers which have fallen at the knees of the MPAA and such (I assume theres one that deals in Uk television :p) so even if they dont host the files they don't look safe :o |
Re: Ntl...
uknova is definately not safe - they are hosted on a server in the same datacentre as accyweb and the TOS of that datacentre forbids the running of torrent trackers that help distribute copyrighted material. Obviously nobody has complained at all about uknova as it would be shut down within 24hours if they just contact the datacentre.
Although it isn't illegal it is becoming more and more difficult to find datacentres that allow trackers that track copyrighted material. |
Re: Ntl...
I used to use P2P a year or so ago but stopped because half the files were spoofed. All I use now is Bittorrent for downloading Linux ISO's which use this as a legitimate method of distribution.
I recon the games getting more trouble than its worth. All that happens now is people borrow USB hard disks and share that way. Ian |
Re: Ntl...
I guess most of us will have broken the law at some time by recording a TV prog and then lending it to someone else (like me asking for Dr. Who episodes shown whilst we were away).
When I was younger I used to tape songs from the radio onto a cassette tape by using a cassette/radio which was designed especially to be able to record from the rdio. It had no other record function (no mike). It wasn't an alternative to buying the records, I never would have been able to afford to do that, but it did help me enjoy more artists and consequently encouraged me to purchase LPs (thats what we called them back then) by the people I liked best. |
Re: Ntl...
its all about money and influence
record companies mainly and software companies have cried so much about piracy you now get less time in jail for selling drugs than what you would for downloading stuff you wouldnt probably buy in the first place if software companies were so sure of themselves all games and software should come with a money back gurentee if the software is buggy or if the game simply isnt up to standard ive bought games in the past for the pc that were around £30 - £40 and to simply put it they were not worth the case they came in compared to other games of the same price range GAME have a policy where if you consider a game you purchase to be crap you get a full refund which is a good idea and should be enforced by law on all software and games etc if that happened bill gates would be up the creek without a paddle because he has never released a fully working problem free version of windows yet lol |
