Out Of Date Food
I was given a very nice home made curry yesterday but i had run out of poperdomes
so i went to a shop on blackburn road for some . he said looking at the sell by date they are 65p but as they are 3 months out of date you can have them for 50p. have you ever bought out of date food because it was cheap ? |
Re: Out Of Date Food
nope, reason you might just finish up with the dreaded jeepers creepers (running loo all day)
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
I bought some junior asprin (cant recall what for.. kids anyways) from the old papershop that used to be at the lights on blackburn rd (nr station) i didnt realise until I got home that they where THREE YEARS OUT OF DATE
I hadn't used one.. Phoned the health dept or whatever (this is a few years ago) and they said..... dont worry there safe to use.......not even slightly interested. hmmmm and the sell by date is for what? |
Re: Out Of Date Food
Nine times out of ten the sell by date is little more than insurance for the manufacturers.
I used to work in pharmaceuticals and was told that the sell by date wasn't the day it would go off but the date they could guarantee that it would still be 100% effective. So a few days, even a few months or a year after it wouldn't actually harm you, but perhaps may not cure you so effectively. Obviously some food does have a short shelf life but it's possible to tell by smell or sight whether a food is off or not and I pay little attention to sell by dates for things like cheese or bread where it's obvious whether they're off or not. The only time I pay attention is with packet goods or fresh meats and fish where I'm never quite sure whether they're ok or not. I would have tasted the poppadums and if they'd been a bit chewy I would have binned them but if they were still fairly crispy I wouldn't have bothered one bit about eating them after the sell by date. |
Re: Out Of Date Food
I'll buy things like Diet Coke that's cheaper because it's reached it's sell by date.
What I hate is buying something at full price which is fresh, at full price, only to find it has to be eaten that day. Supermarkets do it all the time as part of their stock rotation. A root to the back of the shelf/fridge and you'll find the same goods at the same price, but with up to another half a week of shelf life. It makes me feel more of a hunter gatherer doing this, or more a rooter and rummager I suppose. |
Re: Out Of Date Food
I often buy and eat out of date foodstuffs........nothing bad has ever happened to me.
Way back in the Olden days......I don't know if any of you remember Sauls shop......it used to be near Black Abbey St.......I used to get sent there for tine without labels and dented tins.......which were always in a basket by the door.......they were very cheap and sometimes it was the only way Mum could put something on the table......she used to come over all peculiar if we managed to get a tin of red salmon for 6d. Way back then, nothing had sell by dates on......I have even scraped mould off cheese before eating it.......that was then, I don't think I would do that now......but how can a jar of hermetically sealed coffee be past its sell by date........or loose tea in sealed foil bags......? |
Re: Out Of Date Food
Nice thread:mad: .......makes me remember a time when I was pregnant with my first son.
I had trouble keeping anything down when i was pregnant, in and out of hospital, on drips for dehydration and everything. This one particular night, i just fancied some Oxtail soup, so my hubby went to the shop on willows lane and bought some for me. He came home and opened the tin of soup, turned it upside down, and nothing came out. So he banged on the bottom of the tin and the soup came out like dog meat, still in the same shape as the tin it was in. When we looked at the sell by date, it was 2 years out of date. My hubby took the tin and it's contents back to the shop, the owner said to his wife, " the oxtail soup on the shelf is out of date, put it in the cardboard box, and put it out for 30p". Awwwwwww, I don't really go in the shop anymore, things I go in for are fags and things that can't poison me with being out of date. Oh yes the same shop actually sold me some out of date GRIPE WATER, for my son when he was 3 month old. That too was 1 year out of date. How dangerous is this.:s_sick: |
Re: Out Of Date Food
oh slinky that made me laugh I so wish you hadn't put the last 5 words into this post!!!! You'd have got many replys I think!
Awwwwwww, I don't really go in the shop anymore, things I go in for are fags and things that can't poison me with being out of date. Love Romps......... |

I know that fags will kill me, and yes they can put it on my headstone!!!!!!! ' all she wanted in life was a good smoke'. But I would be mortified if they put ' all she wanted was oxtail soup'.:D |
Re: Out Of Date Food
I use my cute little button nose to decide if it's safe to eat out of date food.
I once made some blamange in 1982 which was bought in 1962, and it was yummy.:) Being a singleton, I'm always cutting the mouldy bits of cheese, and I'm perfectly normal.;) |

whats blamange[/QUOTE] I'll look in my Mum's cupboard and see if there is any left and I'm make you some hun, it'll be better for you than your Dad's curry! Lol;) |
Re: Out Of Date Food
Blancmange is flavoured set custard......you can get strawberry, chocolate, vanilla and raspberry.......it is also known as table creams........it used to be very popular with jelly and was an invaluable way of getting milk into kids who wouldn't drink the stuff.
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
Ooops, I just realised that the box was so old I couldn't read the it properly.
Like Marg said it should have read blancmange rather than blamange. This was a proper 'blanc' one as it was white and was supposed to be vanilla. |
Re: Out Of Date Food
I found my old uncle using a rather old looking spice jar the other day, when i looked at the bottle of mixed spice the sell by date was 1977. Maybe I could put it on the antiques roadshow.

Re: Out Of Date Food
sounds good might have to hold you to that one garinda :p
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
I don't have too much issue with sell by dates... What do we really think that things go off on that actually date, is their some kind of time release inside the packet that sends it off when it gets to the date in question???? ;) Meat/Fish is prob the only thing that I will take notice of when it gets to the date
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
If dates to sell by/best before were an absolute then why can shops sell them cheaper. When these dates are close the supermarkets have a reduced sale. I therefore reckon on at least 2-3 bdays beyond before I chance illness. The meat and fish issue is easier as you see them turning and less likely to eat it. How do you think we ended up with curry ie spicey food to hide the taste of rancid meat that was given to the poor on the Indian sub continent in colonial times (alledgedly).
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
ive had some real bargains in the supermarket,,tesco and iceland both reduce their prices,
especialy on veg ,bread and meat n fish...... i wanted some tinned grapefruit in juice the other week and they only had a couple of dented tins,so i asked if they would reduce the price which they did,,i am all for a bargain myself..but mick i think you were ripped off if he only knocked 15p off your poppadomms,,, misserable git |

Re: Out Of Date Food
The insistance on "Sell By" or "Use By" dates is another one of the make-work scams from those caring, sharing, creeps in Brussels.
If you think about it logically, none of it makes any sense whatsoever. Take cheese for example. The whole point about cheese is that it is encouraged to go off in the process of manufcture by the addition of Rennet; that's part of the taste - the longer you leave it, the better it tastes. Some of the more obscure varieties have layers of mould on them so thick you could sole shoes with it. Obviously, perishable stuff like fish and meat need to be sold fresh, for the rest of the contents of your shopping bag it doesn't make one iota of difference. It is little wonder that so many people have all sorts of exotic food allergies these days, their food is so sanitised that they get very little chance to acquire any resistance to germs. |
Re: Out Of Date Food
Well they have interfered with most things so on the point of cheese would they try and ban blue cheeses?
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
Past the sell by date food is good for dieting, as it doesn't stay in you as long.;)
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
Well before that I was looking forward to my tea so I suppose thats good for a diet as well :D
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
Does anyone consider asking the importers and manufacturers of their food how long their ingredients have been sitting in warehouses etc before it is made into the things you buy in the shop and then stored again in distribution centres before it is sold to you with instructions on when you should use it by? No, I thought not.
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
Fireman...I have a spice jar like that, but it is only the jar that is old.......I refill the jar as I run out......mine (after looking) is 1979.
I agree with A-B, we have become a society that is rich enough to dispose of everything......that is why we are running out of landfill sites. |
Re: Out Of Date Food
Acrylic-bob has a point does anybody be sure that the food that they eat out of a packet is as fresh as it can be when packaged. There is no way that every food factory can be covered 24/7 year in year out. One must miss the net so to speak. Then add the food recalls because of contamination or illeagal additives "found" in our food usually by accident. :(

Re: Out Of Date Food
well im always eating ood foods!!! and im as sane as the next man... (as long as rindys not stood next to me!! lol) as long as its not mouldy, the wrong colour or smells bad its fair game!!! im always one for vutting round the bad and using whats left!!! the really soggy tomatoes that melt when you pick them up fry really nicely or make fantastic soup!!mmmm
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
I'm really quite fussy when it comes to ood foods, its silly I know, but I'll chuck things as soon as they reach the date, I'm more careful now when buying food because I was throwing soo much away and I hate wasting food.
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
If food goes past it's sell by date in our house.
I wont touch it but will ask Mick if he wants it. Before it goes off. He's not fussy like me. |
Re: Out Of Date Food
Food is always better fresh, having said that there is no reason why it can't be used as long as it hasn't gone off. I am happy to use certain things past sell by dates but for key items I only buy them when I want them to make sure they are as fresh as possible.

Re: Out Of Date Food
When my brother's family were going away on holiday in July, they gave me some fruit and veg they thought would go off.
A month later some of the tomatoes were still as firm, and apparently as fresh, as the day they gave them to me. These were refridgerated, and had been bought 'fresh' from Accy market. Preservatives? I think there may have been. Still tasted ok though. |
Re: Out Of Date Food
I have spices in my cupboard that are 2 years out of date. Turmeric, chilly powder and coriander.
I still use em, and nothing has happened to me. In fact they have got stronger if anything. |
Re: Out Of Date Food
I'm not the least bit fussy about expiry dates on products. Manufacturers put them on in order to cover themselves, especially pharmaceuticals. I once took some Brufen when I had the flu and was aching all over. Not only did the Brufen expire 2 years previously but it had also been prescribed by the vet for my dog......... Yes it was dispensed at the vets too... When I looked at the tablets they looked exactly the same as human Brufen and were the same dosage so I took em. They helped the aches and pains no end...:D
Most of the contents of my fridge and kitchen cupboards are expired, either by days, weeks and sometimes months. I only chuck stuff away when it starts to grow new stuff. I should probably have a health warning on my kitchen door as my kitchen is where food comes to die...... Having said all that, it is as rare as rocking horse manure that I ever get any kind of stomach upset...:D |
Re: Out Of Date Food
Lets face it - it is only on packaged and processed foodstuffs that you find a sell-by/use-by date. Buy fresh fruit, veg and fish from the market and meat from your local butcher and you won't have this problem. Buy rubbish from ASDA and you will. Of course, far more lethal to human health is fast food. Given a choice of eating the contents of a 10-year old can of corned beef or a Maccy's quarter pounder, I know which I'd choose.
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
The nearest market to me leaves a lot to be desired so Asda it is butcher not a problem fishmonger so so but Micky Dee's you cant beat it easpecially after a night on the tiles. Besides my daught loves the place and I aint going to argue with her. :D
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
i think i might go and check the tins in my cupboard,, i have a habit of buying things when theyre 2 for 1..and then they are there for months ,,
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
I think a lot of goods now use the phrase 'best before' rather than 'use by' which says it all really.

Re: Out Of Date Food
Apart from the obvious, why should we take any notice of sell by dates. One advert for Volvic mineral water stated it takes 2000 years to filter through layers of volcanic ash and rock . So why does that have a sell by date? Wouldnt it already be out of date?
|
Re: Out Of Date Food
Can't beat the whoops counter at Asda which has (usually) meat that should be eaten that day. Have had beer way past the sell/use by date, still tastes the same. I only usually use the use by dates as a guide.

|
Re: Out Of Date Food
Of course there is the other reason for the increased use of "Use By" dates... to encourage that section of the population who are unable to think for themselves to disgard perfectly good food and run along to the supermarket to buy more to replace it. It's a bit like the concept of "built in obsolecence" which you find in so many "white" goods these days - irreplacable components which are designed to fail after a certain amount of usage.

Re: Out Of Date Food
what about things like pickled onions??? surely the whole process of pickling means that it lasts forever...well nearly, theyll be having to mummify our food next so that it doesnt go off!!!
hmm anyone know the shelf life of space food??? |
