Its quite pathetic!! ...barristers going on strike & an arsonist was freed because of no prosecuting barristers!! in angry dispute between barristers and the Government over legal aid fees.

And they wonder why poeople have no faith in the legal system. Its making a mockery of what was once one of the best legal systems around besides does anyone know of a poor solicitor or barrister?

In honesty I think the presiding Judge should take part of the blame for this man walking free. Why couldn't he have adjourned the case for a while, it would seem the most sensible thing to do, it wasn't a petty car crime this man had committed arson. Another criminal walks away from the judicial system laughing at it's incompetence!

Very true point, the judge sounds like he couldnt be arsed with it no wonder people dont have faith in the judicial system which favours the criminal seemingly.

Looks to me like the judge could not be bothered and wanted to go for food early. Lets hope that if this guy commits the same crime again the judge is hauled up as an exssesory to the fact.

Somebody has to take resposibility because if they dont the judges cannot complain if a criminal goes free because of a police mad an error. As for back rubbing its more like the old boys club and all that goes with it.

well lets hope the judge is brought to book for it because what message is it sending out to victims & potential victims or else we'll be overun with criminals

If the legal profesion strikes you will be freed regardless of your crime. A mandate for criminals to do and hope. The lgal system should be like the police not allowed to strike.

If a Judge can force someone to take the stand why not force the barristers. If they refuse they are in contempt and bang 'em up

You can't force a barrister to take a case anymore.

And I know everyone thinks all barristers are earning a fortune, and some are. However at the Criminal Bar, it is virtually all legal aid work, which is very poorly paid comparatively, at about £140 a day. That may sound good, but most barristers don't get a case every day, some are lucky to get one a week. Out of that, they have to pay their whack of Chambers' fees, which includes the salaries of the clerks, telephone bills, electricity bills, etc.

So, our £140 a day comes down to about £80 a day, which of course is then taxed.

I know one barrister at the Criminal Bar who is thinking of giving up, because last year he earning the princely income of £14,000 for the whole year - gross. Deduct his Chambers' fees, then tax and NI. I wouldn't like to live on that, would you? Particularly after 3 years spend doing a degree, a year or so doing the Bar exams, and then a year's pupillage, earning virtually nothing.

Yes, I know I am prejudiced to an extent, but those are the facts.

The Judge was an idiot not to adjourn anyway.

I've never heard of Barristers striking before, although the judge should have adjourned, I hadn't realised some of them were so poorly paid Pendy.
