Re: Dinner or Tea
Let me see. Breakfast,dinner,tea.
I taught my Children to say Pardon or at least tried to. They always said " Wot." I say "I need t go t Loo." Or can I use your toilet. Depends were I am. I use quilted paper now but My Nanna used to use newspaper on a string. |
Re: Dinner or Tea
What's wrong with "Pardon?" eh?
Being married to a Southerner doesn't half confuse life. We always had breakfast dinner and tea but now we don't have any tea and eat later and it's called dinner. According to me teacakes are a lighter version of muffins. According to him teacakes are actually little cakes with icing on or summat and according to my girls muffins are what I used to call buns only bigger. To me a sausage roll is a thing made with puff pastry. To him it's a sandwich made with a bread roll and sausages. What's wrong with chips and gravy? He was amazed by that too. They don't have meat pies down there but they do have a weird plastic sausage thing on sale in all the chip shops. What is it with southern kebabs with all the salad on top so it falls out? Surely it's better on the bottom where the meat can hold it in and where all the meat juices flow down over it and flavour it? I've noticed that Toppings do southern kebabs. Guess where Busman buys his kebabs?! |
Re: Dinner or Tea
To me a jam sandwich is a cake. Bread n jam a jam butty.
It's Casserole in the oven. Stew on top. Mmmm. Could start a new thread about food differences. Dabs are called scallops were I come from. |
Re: Dinner or Tea
id hate to ever lose my northern 'twangs'; im extremely proud of where ive grown up and the way i talk; and i am now putting it into fuller practise with the uprise in people my age becoming more posh ??! whats up with that?!! i didnt know we were being invaded by the army of southern shandy boys drinking lager tops with painted toes.....

Re: Dinner or Tea
Jam Butty, = Piece and Jam
Chip Barm = Chip Butty fish is fish. = Same scallop = dab currant bun = the same plain barm = A roll pint of heavy = bitter pint of light = mild nip = spirit measure gassed = paraletic |

Re: Dinner or Tea
When all is said and done, does it really matter? Say what you feel like. Speak naturally as long as you can make yourself understood.
I blame Nancy Mitford, myself, with her pronouncements about U and None-U speech. The socially aspirant suddenly became so very careful about what they said, in case they betrayed their humble origins. The funny thing is Nancy admitted, later, that she was just pulling everyone's leg. ;) |
Re: Dinner or Tea
Its too late, we baby boomers wanted to change the world in the 60s, well its happened, cant blame generations after us.

Re: Dinner or Tea
It's all very well just saying what comes naturally until your other half looks at you with a puzzled expression. That's still happening with me and Busman. :D
