Yes lots went on in 40 and 41 but it didn't start until 42.

Madhatter - I've made my point on several occasion earlier on in the thread, and I agree with Doug and Garinda that we should agree to disagree.

There were all sorts of battles and skirmishes and goings on in 1640/41 but most of those were in Scotland and Ireland weren't they? Didn't the King move Parliament up north on 1642?

Anyway it's yet another tragic loss of history to this area. We have so little remaining. Places where I used to wander free as a child now seem to be barred to me. When Busman first came up here I wanted to show him places of interest only to discover that I no longer had access to them. Gates had appeared with notices on saying "Private, Keep Out!"

Thanks for the photos A-b. I almost feel like saying they might as well stick a Panopticoon on the Coppice and have done with it. There's enough been ruined already that it really doesn't sound all that bad after all in comparison.

On the subject of litter I took this photo. At least they tried, and it's a very polite notice.

Well now then, doesn't this all go to show that no one is perfect, not even little old me! And doesn't it teach us all to check our sources before we commit ourselves?

It was obvious that the Civil War in England began in 1642 and that the consequent skirmish on Whinney Hill took place in that year, obvious that is to those who had paid attention in history classes, which I evidently did not.

Thanks to Tealeaf and Doug and Garinda for setting the record straight. Mea Culpa, I am chastising myself as I type....OUCH! I have also given myself five hundred lines to be done by first thing on Monday morning, in Ink!
