Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

We have a possible regular babysitter whos a friend's daughter living just round the corner from us. Whats the going rate nowadays? Shes 15, We are looking at a 7pm-12 with us supplying the DVD, pop, snacks etc.

I don't want to rip her off or pay over the odds ourselves.

Any other hints, tips that I should be aware of?

Thought babysitters had to be 16 years old.

A tenner should do It. That was my going rate. Although I felt guilty accepting money from family. They always insisted. And just gave a tenner.

A fiver is too short, and you dont want to be messing about with change. So a crisp £10.

My youngest Daughter is 15 and it would be illegal for her to babysit her own younger brothers let alone someone elses kids. Sorry entwisi but ya dont want to go shouting about it mate :)

BTW I think most 15 year old girls are old enough and mature enough to babysit and it should be the parents call... But it aint...

Not even 14 it seems..

I stand corrected on the first part and will stick to the second part of my message seeing I had both ends covered hehe :)

I think a lot of people have always thought there was a min age..

Googling a bit further it seems if something does go wrong and they are under 16 you could get prosecuted, if there over 16 they would be prosecuted - can't prosecute under 16
A "Child" is classed as 14 or under
Here is a link to lancashire police recommendations

Re: Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

Yes this seems to be where it gets confused...

Quote:

it should be noted, that if parents arrange for a baby sitter who is under sixteen years of age the parents have not transferred any responsibility for their children to be looked after. Therefore, should any harm or accident occur to a child whilst in the care of an under age baby sitter, the parents may still be held responsible and may have action taken against them for neglect.

Thats what I must have known and over time wrongly presumed it meant you had to be 15 to babysit...I am guessing I aint the only one.

When my grandaughter was a baby, 'we' advertised for a babysitter 'cause they would have to look after my seven year old son too .. we finished up with a 16 year old boy from the estate, who was absolutely wonderful. We paid him £10 up to midnight (15 years ago remember), but for every part thereof we were late after midnight, £5 per hour. It worked a treat and never felt too guilty if not home in time. He was worth it anyway, and always had good contact with the parents.
