If he'd had the balls to tell Diana 'look I'll marry you, you will be Queen of England, but I love someone else, and will carry on with my affair sometime in our marriage,' then she could have made up her own nineteen year old mind, instead of being hoodwinked into it. A virginal innocent to the slaughter.

With hindsight, when asked if they were in love on their engagement, Diana replied 'of course'. He muttered through gritted teeth 'whatever in love means', all very telling, and very sad.

I think Charles is a spoilt, self-indulgent, man who has never really grown up. He is in a position of great privilege, but feels free to moan about how he was unhappy at school, and how he was prevented from doing what he wanted by his position. Ah, but he was determined to hang on to that position, wasn't he. I had great sympathy for Diana, the poor girl simply believed her own publicity, the fairy-tale romance, etc. She was a human sacrifice, offered up by both grandmothers (Ruth, Lady Fermoy and the QM), who cooked the whole thing up. I do also feel rather sorry for Andrew Parker-Bowles, who had to put up with everyone knowing who his wife was knocking off - as one friend put it "Greater love hath no man than that he lays down his wife for his country"!!!
