That's the problem Spuggie J...........I just hate to be beaten by them.

The last row we had concerned Accy Stanley as they would not admit that our team was one of the founders of the football league. I really did stomp out of the bar in a huff that night!

I just hate know alls that know nowt.

Tonight's 'discussion' was centered on George Formby and I insisted that he had a ukelaleh, pardon the spelling, which was round. The Southern crowd say that it was like a small guitar. I've done a search but it seems a little conflicting.........someone help me out!!

I understand that a "Ukelele" looks like a small guitar and a "Banjo Ukelele" looks like a small banjo.

Sorry to disillusion you, I always believed Accy Stanley were founder members, but they weren't. It was Accrington FC who were founder members of the league, but they went under, and Accy Stanley took over. So, Accrington were founder members, but it wasn't Stanley then.

Ooh, bitchy or wot! :p As a "southerner" the only northerner I have ever slagged off is that superzero Britcliffe. (Oh yea, one particular football fanatic with a camera as well:) )

In his earlier films George played an ordinary ukelele, that looks like a small guitar, but in his later films he played the banjolele which has a round body. It has the same tuning as a uke but the resonance of a banjo.

George lived most of his early life in Warrington and he's buried in the cemetery there as his mum lived in W'gton until she died 20 years or so ago aged 101. Warrington museum had a George Formby exhibiton a couple of years ago and there were 3 of his banjoleles on display as well as 1 of his motorbikes that he rode in the TT.

George (as you might have guessed) is one of my all-time heros. :D

Most films of that time were good because of it. That includes Norman Wisdom.

My daughter bought me a CD of 24 of George's songs, Xmas '04. She was gobsmacked at some of the lyrics and couldn't believe how he got away with it. ;)

No PC pilldocks about when they were recorded. Just shows how narrow minded we have become as a nation. :(

Interesting, GrannyClaret. We did agree to differ, North and South, that is, so thanks for all your help.

As for Accrington Stanley, I think I just said Accrington and I was right at the end of the day.

Any suggestions for the next subject for the North/South evening argument..........maybe Gracie Fields might wind our Mancie up, lol.
