Re: How are you all staying cool?

All I can say is that I will be glad when summer comes around.

(Ducks and weaves to avoid an assortment of flying missiles thrown by other forum members)

I keep cool by being cool. By that I mean I avoid making any unnecessary movement and if I have to get up from my chair I do so slowly and move around slowly. I also have a constant brew at arms length that is regularly sipped.

All my windows are open as is my only door. A gentle breeze drifts through my room, which is currently at 84 F. That’s er let me see – minus 32, times 5, divided by 9 equals 26.4 C. Or turned around the reported hot spot of 36.4 C divided by 5, multiplied by 9, plus 32 equals 97.52 F. If it gets to 37.8 tomorrow it will be 100 F.

If you take a frying pan outside and leave it in the sun for a while tomorrow, chuck in some sort of cooking oil or fat and break an egg into it, it will fry quite nicely.

The 9th dive bomber fly squadron has invaded my flat and seems hell bent on making my life difficult.

I think it may well have been 76 I thought it was when it was the Queens silver jubilee but it seems that Iwas wrong.

we did have one in 77 I think, but that jubilee year was very hot, I can remember having a party on the school fields.

I know that 1976 was a long hot summer....I was on night duty for most of the summer and I remember being on the top deck of the Corporation bus, travelling to the Infirmary...seeing folk sat outside with long cool drinks and being very very envious.
It was also too hot to sleep during the day.....I know that somedays I slept outside........and went to work feeling absolutely bushed.

This is my 3000 post!

I think 75 was a heatwave and we all thought it couldn't get any hotter then 76 came along and it was even hotter. It was the summer in between leaving St Mary's and going to Paddock House.

Apparently today was the hottest day ever!!!!

My memories here are reliable for reasons I'll explain.

1975, the heatwave started on June 2nd and lasted 6 weeks, then just settled into warm and dry. How do I know? Well June 1st was my son's 10th birthday and we were living in Durham City. We got up that morning to find 5" of snow on the ground! I'm not kidding. Next day it was all gone - and it was beautiful weather right up until my husband went to America on business in the September. It went colder then and I couldn't get at the heating boiler to turn it on (I was 6 months pregnant) and had to get the man next door to do it.

1976 was the long hot Summer. We had moved to Cheshire and our youngest child was 6 months old when it started in June. I have vivid memories of trying to keep her cool and get her off to sleep in stifling heat, hotter than in 75, and it lasted well into September when my son started at Grammar School and moaned that his new blazer was too hot.

1977 was very warm around the Jubilee. We had various things going on in the village centre and we sat outside a pub listening to a trad jazz band playing in the village square on a lovely warm night.

So, everybody's right aren't they? :)

We had an heatwave in the Summer of 1975 and 1977. I can remember this vividly because I was heavily pregnant in both those years.

'76 was the long hot summer, as has been said already, when we had droughts and water shortages nationwide. It was also the year Dad decided we need a swimming pool.:)

July of '77 was certainly bad. We were on holiday and it was too wet and choppy to take our boat out everyday for a fortnight.:(
