blue boxes chipped, old or new news?

As you all know I haven't been around for a while and so have not seen all the threads... Anyway, the whole chipping of bins has really pee'd me off and so I went out to mine and low and behold it is chipped, as reported by all newspapers and media..
But did you know that your blue recycling box is also chipped? I checked mine today and found a small device about the size of a 2p with the label "World Tag - Logistic and Industrial Transponder" - so this means I have had 1 device in my garden that is bugged and another unit in my HOUSE that is also bugged.. This beggars belief that they did not inform us of the spying.
Anyway, I will be removing these devices and destroying them, so please, HBC come and get me and I will see you in court!

By the way, if this is the first uncovering of the blue boxes being bugged, if you are a newspaper, please at least give us some credit for the story - just printing the web address is enough, thanks.

Well just checked ours and its not chipped,

If you get a new one check and let us know.

:D Don't bother taking it out, have a look for a single pensioner and swop bins and boxes, that will put the cat among the pigeons. :D

Re: blue boxes chipped, old or new news?

i say we shoudl collect all these chips and re locate them in the councils brown box's so that we can manage how much crap they output ;)

edit:

wouldnt it be nice if we could arrange a collection point for these chips so that everybody could hand them in , then dump them on teh counter of the town hall

surely you cant be done for returning unwanted items and who teh hell gave te council power to put bugs in our homes iem pretty sure this breaks soem law

surely you can take them off the bins,if they havnt informed you that they have been put on there you can take them off and say you thought that kids have put them on there,or tell them you dont want them on your property(i mean the garden/yard

Re: blue boxes chipped, old or new news?

Ages ago when my daughter came home from school with a pledge form - the council promising something to schools for the number of people each pupil could convert to recycling - I asked the blue box collecting man how they would know who was or wasn't participating and he showed me the circular device under the rim of the blue box. He said it was just for monitoring who was recycling so they knew which school they had made the pledge to.

I hope that makes sense.

My wheelie bin appears to be chipped and it’s under what appears to be a plastic hexagon headed screw located at the front of the bin under the rim. My blue box isn’t I don’t think I’ll see better tomorrow.

Here’s a couple of links on the subject.

Im really gobsmacked at the thought that they are allowed to do this without your knowledge ..it disgusts me that a local council can invade peoples privacy in such a way what next cameras lookin through kitchen windows to make you recycle properly ?

Big bin looks bug free but the blue box has something like a small round magnet but no writing on it, check again in daylight.

Those are as delivered on a 'test scheme' there are about 3 houses around here with them. They are the small wheelie bins. I have a blue bag somewhere I think. We have a blue box as well, I bet its the cleanest in Hyndburn ;)

Who actualy owns the bins? Are they allowed to do this?

We should take them off and dump them all somewhere for them to find, will be like a treasurehunt.

That's a good question Cyfr. Apparently the council own them until one goes missing and then they insist we have to pay for a new one.

If you have followed the rules regarding putting the bin out then I would argue that it is their fault the bin has gone missing and they should replace it.

MUMMIBOO 26-09-2006 09:11

Re: blue boxes chipped, old or new news?

Well mine gets soo full i dont even use them on the day/night they collect i fill up bags with all the recycling and hang them on the fence and put the blue boxes out next to the bags so that they know to stop here! so to them it looks asthough i dont recycle but in fact i doo!!

Margaret Pilkington 26-09-2006 14:12

Re: blue boxes chipped, old or new news?

It is supposed to be illegal to remove the tags....this is because the bin belongs to the council. Some councils have threatened to fine people who remove the tags. You could inactivate the tag by putting a strong magnetic force on / near it.

Can I suggest taking all 3 chips out and replace them into the wrong bins, that will really confuse them :D
It will look like you do a hell of a lot of recycling and have very little rubbish for the general tip :D

Are they perhaps there to weigh/count/monitor the rubbish so HBC can respond to whether or not it is meeting Government quotas on recycling?

Surely they would know if they are being successeful? They look out the office window do we have a load of cans/bottles/paper to be picked up this week?

If the answer is yes then they are doing the job.
If the answer is no, then situation normal and they aren't showing up any of the other council departments by being efficient.

Too simple Less, far too simple for HBC let alone the powers that be at Westminster.

Re: blue boxes chipped, old or new news?

I'm happily not tagged.:)

What suprises me is what they are going to do with the information they get from the chips?

It took Hyndburn Borough Council two years of phone calls to eventually get round to giving me the requested recycling box/sacks, and if you've ever tried phoning the council, and been held in a queue for what seems like forever, you may come to the conclusion that they may be wiser to employ people to actually answer the phones.

Are they going to employ a person, or team of people, to analyse the information gathered?

Not being a techie, what useful information could these chips possibly give?

They could probably say how often the wheelie bin/boxes are moved, or how much they weigh, but they wont be able to tell if you've mixed up your glass with your plastics, or the fact that your neighbour has over filled your bin with rubbish after you left it out for collection.

I have:
White sack- paper.
Blue sack- plastic.
Green sack- textiles.
Blue box- glass and tins.
Black wheelie bin- dead bodies...I mean all the rest of the rubbish, except for cardboard, which has to be bundled up next to the bin.

:D

After much pleading with the recycling depaertment at HBC, my recycling kit was delivered about six weeks ago. The instructions of what goes in which receptacle are what I posted earlier.

It does seem a bit mad that differing parts of the borough have different instructions.

The green recycling sack was posted through my door in April, and which I strated a thread about.

The tags do one thing only. They identify the bin. Thats it. No secret camera. They do not count how many times you open the lid. They don't weigh the bin. They don't detect the wrong item in the bin. They just have an id number that can be read by the bin wagon or a hand held unit.

Well to coin a phrase, that's just rubbish information, for the Council, not from you.

Surely the refuse collectors can see if a house never uses the recycling kit, or if a person's wheelie bin isn't put out for more than a year, then the person is probably dead...with a mountain of Council Tax demands behind the door...waiting to be recycled!

Gayle 26-09-2006 18:05

Re: blue boxes chipped, old or new news?

If you have children of school age you can pledge to recycle. You can also get grandparents to do so as well. I assume that they use the tags to identify who is actually recycling and who has just signed the form but not recycled at all.

The school's get points per pledges and are awarded prizes like computers if the people who have pledged actually do so.

We NEVER put out our blue box and blue sack. That doesn't mean that we don't recycle. It just means that we can't be bothered waiting for HBC to empty once a fortnight. We take them to the tip ourselves. Will they tell us off for not putting our blue box/bag out? I'd like to see them try!
