Yes, Winky Barrel was a chemistry teacher and a very good one at that. A really nice bloke, as well. Gobbin was an elderly chap who was nearing retirement and really couldn't handle a class full of boisterous youths. I remember when I started at AGS in 1962, the Cuban missile crisis was in the news. Some of the more politically-minded pupils organised a "hands off Cuba" march to the Town Hall. There was a picture in the LET of Gobbin remonstrating with them outside the tax office (now Platts Club) at the bottom of Willows Lane. They swept him aside rather like King Canute and carried on regardless.

To be honest, it was organised by a few beatnik-type guys. The vast majority joined in just for a lark. I hasten to add that I regarded the whole thing with total disdain!

My mother said that Gobbinlanders were the folk that lived in that part of Oswaldtwistle above Union St.

This is not the first thread on this subject and I doubt if it will be the last, but just a reminder what or who a Gobbiner was. He/She was someone who was thick, stupid, challenged or simply the village idiot. This was a northern english term and was applied locally to those living in the upper part of Ossy, i.e. beyond the current lamp.

I started something didn't I....? it was me who mentioned Gobbinland in reply to Gayles thread about her Oswald-opoly. I think T has got the right handle on it.

Which end is upper, towards Stanhill or towards Church?

Tealeaf 18-10-2006 09:54

Re: Gobbin ????

Towards Stanhill..i.e. south-west Ossy, or that part of Ossy on the higher ground.

People in Church are far too intelligent to be associated in any way with Gobbins.
