If nobody hit's these bollards surely after initial installation charges, the cost would only be for general maintenance?
Any damage caused to them by someone stupid enough to attempt fighting with them would be claimed against insurance? I know when I was in an accident that damaged road fencing near Asda, the council put in a claim against me and my insurance company put a claim in against the person that had put me into the fences in the first place.

I feel more strongly on the issue because my dad was run over in front of the town hall a few years ago by some idiot coming through. (Also hadnt updated his car tax etc because he was never traced even though they had the registration number)

Its interesting that your backing the local Labour party against the Tory party on this issue;) . However in order to effect change, you'll have to carry that through to the ballot box because this lot (the blue lot) have faffed around for 4 years now and nothing has got done. However a change of adminstration would help solve this (and many other) problems where nothing gets done.

The Tories did propose for 18 months temporary traffic lights. I have three issues with this. Temporary means you are having to spend money twice to solve the problem. Crucially if someone has been knocked over fatally what use is a camera to the family of the bereaved when there could have been retractable bollards. Thirdly, it requires manpower to resource it. Either through ticketing and collection like speed cameras or simpler system whereby CCTV is used but then that will also require monitoring and follow up bureacracy of some sort.

A perfect example of how HBC is a poor council IMHO. A member of the general public in probably 15 minutes is nearer to a solution.

Given many small and large authorities have installed this HBC should not be in any worse a position to install these. The leadership could be blocking it OR we have members of staff who have thie own ideas and the political leadership is too weak or indifferent to alter that.

Where are the Police?
A bobby could 'do' dozens of people every day. It would probably pay his wages.
Same goes for parking attendants or whatever they are called. While in Argos for 10 mins today 3 cars illegally parked on the yellow line outside Argos, 2 of them were on the footpath as well. A traffic warden/attendent/Police could make a killing outside Argos.

The fact that AccyJay pulled all the relivent info shows it can be done but the council dosnt give a donald duck obout an issue as important as this otherwise they would have found a way to deal with it.

Just had an 'off the cuff' statement from the source that were responsible for the idea, design and implementation of these bollards:-

'Suppose this is the video of the idiot crashing his car into the bollards on Corporation Street. There are signs for about half a mile saying 'Corporation Street/Cross Street closed 11 am/7pm to cars. Buses Only. Automatic Bollards.' Then there is red/green light system on Corporation Street outside the Next Store. It's quite simple, green = go, red = your car is about to get smashed up by a 4 foot high metal bollard .. Idiots' :D

I think those bollards would be an excellent idea. Is this another one for the "positive responses to negative issues" thread? OK maybe they do cost money but if the council sued everybody who damaged them they'd soon cover costs.

Mind you, the number of people who would run into them and the number of buses it would hold up, as there are not exactly many alternative routes out of the bus station for them, could cause a bit of a log jam in Peel Street. :D
