There is plenty of time for us to develop neurosis as adults, without screwing up the next generation now. Let them enjoy their childhoods, without all this b*llocks about wanting to have the perfect body, which is foisted upon us by the fashion industry and the media, and which most of us will never obtain anyway. |
Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
I wouldn't mind so much if it was actually perfect but this image we are faced with isn't perfect it's unrealistic and abnormal.
I just showed 2 images to my daughters and asked for opinions. The first was that back view of a spine and ribs with a few bits of cloth draped across them. Don't tell me there's anyone in Accy who looks like that so why do we have models who look like that? The response was "yeeeeeeee-uew!" and "OH MY GOSH!" The second was of Jen from the website in that link. The response was "She's nice and slim." When I told them that she had been told to lose weight because she's too fat to be a model Mimi said "You're kidding! She ain't fat. She's slim!" (I'd have preferred her to have said "isn't" ;) ) Emz just said "Flip!" |

Okay, looks like this thread has finally run out of steam. I truly hope so many of these "intense" discussions don't cause any lasting damage to relationships. As in real life, families fight and families make up (most times). I hope a few p.m. are sent to ensure wounds are healed eh. Not a sermon, just a thought!
Plus, as you all can see by the latest entrance in Gayle's show. No others need apply!:D Keep Smiling! Brian |
Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
Judging by the way you strike a pose, Garinda will be looking over his shoulder! :D
Has anyone else notised the old boy in the foreground giving it the "Peter Kay" treatment? |
Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
I'm not reigniting this thread to cause offence, just to let you know what happened on Make me a Supermodel last night, for those of you who may have a life, and were probably doing something more interesting on a Friday night instead.:D
Jen, the Mum from Wigan, again faced the public vote for the second time because she's put on weight whilst taking part of the programme. In the live catwalk walk off they showed a VT clip were she talked about her weight and the pressure she felt under to conform. She looked stunning, but was told by the judges she had a pretty face but was too fat to be a successful model. Rachel Hunter really layed into her for using the clip about her weight to gain votes. It's quite ironic, Rachel Hunter was never a supermodel, she only found success after she married Rod Stewart. Another of the judges Tandy who runs one of the biggest model agencies, is a larger women to put it politely. Anyway the public voted to keep Jen in, and next week she's in the final four to win the modelling contract. I was so incensed at the way she was treated I, for the first time ever in a reality show, texted my vote to keep her in. The thing is even if the public vote her the winner she won't get much work as a model because she has hips and isn't a perfect sample size, but hopefully she will get other work because she has a great personality, as well as being beautiful. |
Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
not been watching it but have read your updates on here Garinda and I'm glad to hear she's still in and just to spite the judges I hope she wins and becomes very successful!!!!
Oh yeah and I was doing something more interesting last night!!! and night before .... and night before that :D ;) |
Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
It's barmy isn't it? When you look at the Miss World beauty pageants, regardless of wheter you approve of them or not, the winners always had shape. I mean they went in in their middles and came out above and below. In the past the voluptuous woman was regarded as the more beautiful.
I didn't watch the program either but from what you've said I think it sounds like Jen has been treated very cruelly but it's possibly not the fault of Rachel Hunter or Tandy Wassername because they are just pandering to the current fashion industry ideal. Unfortunately you are probably right that even if Jen wins she probably won't get modellng jobs which is very sad. In vew of the fact that Sophie Dahl, the hope for a change of attitude, ended up conforming it's hard to hold out any hope that this will change in the forseeable future. |
Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
On Thursday Moorhead held a fit or wot! day. All students were off normal timetable and in place of normal lessons had various lessons about staying fit and healthy. One of the year 9 lessons was about body image and how the media portray the 'perfect body'. Students were told how the media airbrush photo's before publication and that in reality they are not a true representation of a normal healthy woman. They were shown a photo of an actress and then a front cover of a magazine with the same actress so that they could see the difference. They were also given many facts eg. three billion people do not have the figure of a super model, only eight do!
I showed them the photo that Garinda posted and they said it made them feel sick |
Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
I heard about this fit or wot day from my girls and it sounds like it was an excellent idea. Mimi and Emz have seen the pics on here and responded with disgust but it's encouraging to hear that others thought the same too.

Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
It all seemed to go well and was very worthwhile. It might become a regular thing because each year group had different lessons. I hope so, it was very informative with a lot of group discussion (in the lessons that I saw).

Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
There was quite a bit of discussing between my girls when they got back home too, comparing what the two different years had done.

Giorgio Armani joins in the debate about size zero models in today's Daily Mail.
I have never liked thin models on the catwalk, says Giorgio Armani | the Daily Mail |
Re: Portrayal of women: (split)
Just indirectly watched something on TV about a bunch of girls wanting to be models - all with lovely figures and one poor girl being told she was outsize!
