Singing Ringing Tree, Burnley

I've stayed off here for a few weeks and I suspect I'm going to regret posting this but thought you might like to know that Burnley's Panopticon has been built.

http://www.panopticons.uk.net/images/SRT.jpg

Just off the A682 at Crown Point, Burnley.

For another view of it someone has posted it onto You Tube already.

Don't think Burnley residents are bothered about the waste of money, they didn't pay for it. :D

Re: Singing Ringing Tree, Burnley

It is the most spooky sound ever, I'll agree! You can't hear it until you get about 30ft away from it. It uses the wind to make the noise and so as you're walking down the path all you can hear is the wind (it's on top of a hill) then as you're walking towards it these noises start coming out of the wind.

I think it is the most beautiful of the sculptures in the series.

The money, as I have said many times, comes from NWDA and not a penny of it from the Council. Private money has also been put into this by the Towneley family and some trusts, who's land it is on.

Just a point though. Whether you like it or not, and aesthetics are very personal, it is getting publicity for Burnley - good publicity at that.

I wouldn't go that far ;) .... It's interesting but far from beautiful ....... and I still wouldn't like owt like that on the top of the coppice. The scenery in the background is lovely and then you've got that thing shoved there spoiling it.

Re: Singing Ringing Tree, Burnley

Where is it getting publicity? There was a mention on Granada news but news is very quickly forgotten. How many people can now remember the one Blackburn have and where it is located?

It is a very freaky weird sound. I'd certainly not call it singing or ringing, but then again I wouldn't call it a tree either.

It doesn't look quite like the artists impression but then things never do do they? I'm not sure whether I find it attractive or not but I do agree that it's the best of the bunch.

I'd like it in Hyndburn yes, though I was never in favour of the Coppice being the right place for a pantopican. The skyline of Ossy Moors yes.

Like I said the Coppice was the wrong place for a major sculpture, it's too isolated as a hill, and too dominating a feature in the town, and yes already naturally beautiful.

This tree, set in this landscape, in my opinion looks great. I'd be the first to slag it off if I genuinely thought it was crap, as it would in my backyard because of it's size.

Thought the bespectacled, bald, willow man I've had built in my yard, ready for the grand fire ceremony on New Year's Eve looks great.;)

It's fake crap! God (or who ever did it) gave us a natural beauty to admire rather than a man made metal sculpture.

Human created beauty is found in architecture of beautiful buildings, again IMHO. Not some crappy metal monstrosity plonked on some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

They feature on the Blackburn Coat of Arms and they used to be on all the black bins and bollards in the town. The town motto is something to do with them too. The hardworking bee has historically been the symbol of Blackburn. That's why the new radio station chose it for its name.
