i'm not too sure what they're doing wether they're knockin that church down or refurbishing it but there's been a few placards placed sayin show respect fo the dead and save the graves

whats your thoughts on that?

I went past last week i think, and was surprised to see fairly fresh flowers on one of the graves. Building on graveyards must have been going on for years surely. Behind the cemetry on Burnley road there is a wall, and behind he wall is a load of old head stones! All broken and just thrown there. Very creepy.

When the Asda on Hyndburn Rd was built, the old Ewbank factory was demolished and the graveyard next to it was exhumed. This is nothing new what is happening... assuming that the graves at Rising Bridge are being dug up.

people still visit that cemetary and the dead shoudl be left alone , the cemetry that got exhumed on hyndburn road hadnt had visitors in years and a lot of the tombs were open as we used to play hide and seek in there

as usual its probably a case of money talks but in my opinion grave yards shoudl not be disturbed if theyare still been used

once of a day regulation dictated that such sites had to be sheeted/protected from public gaze, to my knowledge, seems like times have changed,if so that should NOT be the case, after what my friend told me about the union st,excavation.

They will have to move the graves before any building work begins, and the ground de-consecrated, planning permission to move the graves may not yet have taken effect or indeed have been granted. They may not be building on the graves, any idea what the 'developers' are doing?

no idea iantow, just assumed with placards saying "save the graves" that they were exhuming.

No they are not exhuming the graves.

The church was closed about 5 years ago - you are talking about the one at Rising Bridge - St John's Stonefold. The church was sold last year and planning permission was given to turn it into a 4 bed room home. The person who bought it from the diocese then put it up for sale after getting the planning permission. It has recently been sold again and now the person who bought it is now turning it into a 4 bed home and the work started a couple of weeks ago. What it is is someone has decided to put these placards up after the work has started. Theyve cordoned of the churchyard away from the church but theyve knocked down the walls so as to get work vehicles in. There are graves just behind one of the walls that was knocked down. I think it was knocked down by a lorry turning into the garage again.

I would know if they were doing any exhuming on that church yard because i was in there on Friday putting a wreath on my mum & dads grave in there.

By the way that digger i havent seen it drive over graves. The churchyard is on 3 sides of the church - the digger is on the 4th side in front of the church where there are no graves. I know this mani because i live near the church, that church was where i was baptised and confirmed, my sisters and brother was married in there, my father had his funeral there and buried there and my mother was buried in there in January of this year.
