The stock is still in the store,we made a profit year on year, the company was performing well compared to HMV's £36 million losses in 6 months .We owed £2 million(so we have been told) How come they are still trading and we aren't???

That's a question that only Music Zone can answer. They must have been struggling to pay bills and felt that going into receivership was their only option. I know that's small comfort to those of you who have lost your jobs but how would they pay your wages if they didn't have anything to pay them with? Presumably the stock will be sold off by the receivers, along with shopfittings and any other assetts to pay the outstanding debts. Perhaps HMV think they can overcome those losses in the coming months and presumably they haven't yet got creditors hounding them for unpaid bills. They must be able to convince their bank to keep the overdraft going whereas MZ's bank could have bee demanding it be cleared in full. Maybe HMV will eventually come a cropper too.

It's madness in the world of economy. If we spend too much money we cause inflation and bank rate goes up and people end up losing their homes as they can't afford the mortgages. We spend too little and businesses go bust, people lose their jobs and end up losing their homes because they can't afford the mortgages.

Too late now;pay the bus fare to Blackburn or DOWNLOAD it and hammer the final nail into the coffin of music retailers. 6 hard working people out of job as of today;...go and ask 'em in Woolies/Asda/Tesco what was the last Beautiful South cd or "what's that tune on the advert with all them coloured balls?"

You will miss us now we are gone.

As you'll know from my previous posts in this thread I was far from uninterested and I'm not the only one. I have only just seen this post of yours, haven't been online much today nor last night as I had a lot to do.

I think it's a great loss to the town. I do wish you all well in being able to find other jobs but I can see your point of view that this town is going downhill fast. The more people there are out of work the the less money there is to spend and the more people end up out of work as a consequence. I wish I knew the answer.

sorry to hear about ur loss lindsey it was a good shop - i for one am thankful i was able to buy my friends dvd's for £20 there when everyone else had marked them up to 49.99

i was workin in burnley today and i got talkin to some ppl and htey were burnley members of staff - needless to say they werent too happy either.

as for hmv and thier losses - they have very deep pockets - and big backers - EMI, Waterstones - the book shop, plus hmv is very international - in some countries not doin so well - eg uk and usa but in canada its flying - its currently trying to break big into the eastern asia markets

It's true ! We have been bought by the chain "Fopp". They have bought around 60 of the stores and I finally got my keys back today ! A courier had to come and find me at Asda ! We will be back instore tomorrow to do a stocktake;hopefully reopen Wednesday. The store will look very empty for a while as a lot of the stock has to go back to the suppliers as they are now creditors of Music Zone but hopefully we will get stocked up again soon. Fopp are well known for round pound prices and are not much dearer than MZ were, they tend to stock a more eclectic range with world music and classical, more "arty" dvds and also books.
We are all very relieved and excited about this, all the team bar one will be back .(unless I can persuade Andrew that we are more fun than Barclays !)
Get in !!!

Will it be possible to order obscure "one-offs", or will we be tied to making a choice from the bulk buying policy of the new owners, as was the case with Music Zone.
I am glad that the shop is once again under your command, Lindsay, even though I was often guilty of impulse buying on more ocaissions than my bank balance could justify.

lindsay ormerod 04-02-2007 14:44

Re: Music Zone

Not sure what their buying policy is;I hope we get a bit of freedom in what we stock and would hope that there is some facility for doing customer orders;they have a website that you can order from. Apparently a good company by all reports, their store in Manchester even has a coffee shop ! Just had a word with our regional manager and he reckons Wednesday to reopen but it's just going to look like a very empty Music Zone for some time !:o

Re: Music Zone

That's great news, Lindsay! Funnily enough, I was recommending Fopps to Shakermaker just the other week. Don't know if many of you have visited the Manchester store, but it's one heck of a record shop. As Mick says, a very eclectic stock range and some cracking bargains to be had. Don't let the fact that an old git like me is praising it put you off either - they stock all the latest beat combos for you swinging, with-it types. ;)

Seriously, this is just the sort of store that Accrington needs. I hope everyone who's interested in music on here supports it - I certainly will be on my pre-match, round-town walkabouts.

Sparkologist 04-02-2007 17:13

Where abouts in Manchester is the Fopps music store?

Wynonie Harris 04-02-2007 17:31

Re: Music Zone

It's on Brown Street. If you're walking up Market Street from Marks & Sparks, about halfway up on your right, you'll see a smallish Tescos store on a corner. That's Brown Street. Just walk along there (it's pedestrianised) and about a hundred yards along, you'll see Fopps on your left.

Glad to hear its worked out for you Lindsay, Barclays is a decent employer though and there are lots of opportunities to move into other things like IT where the pay is very good and teh hours/conditions... well, check out my thread about teh conditions here :D. Its also got to be said that it will be a rare day when Barclays make its counter staff redundant with its drive to be a top 5 world bank (Internal ra-ra)

I remember a time when people said bank workers would never be made redundant - then they started closing down branches all over the place and disposing of staff left right and centre.

entwisi 06-02-2007 09:16

Re: Music Zone

Aye, but I believe those days are over now. rationalisation happened as a lot of banks had far too many branches to be economically viable. With the focus on shareholder value encouraged by the Chancellor these had to be pruned. We now seem to be in a period where the focus is back on people/ecological value with teh benefits of a streamlined network.

You only have to look at teh ads now as Banks rarely try and sell you a definitive product, more a "look at how green/customer focussed etc we are!"

I think its ace fopp have bought the chain of shops...now I dont know what changes if any they are going to do to the shop down here but in glasgow fopp is a cracking shop for buying the more obscure music and those hard to find classics...I have been buying stuff from fopp in glasgow since early 90's...and I was really please they bought the chain down here...fopp have came such a long way since the little market stall in the middle of glasgow that they used to have...I will be keeping an eye on what they do down here....

Hi chaps !
Sorry I've not been on in ages. I got a job at Boots before the store closed the other week;the company are blaming "unviable rents" . Make your own minds up on that one but given the number of empty units in town and the possibility of negotiating with the landlords I am more than a bit dubious ! The staff have ben made redundant yet again;all a bit odd since only 4 weeks ago the regional manager was offering me money to stay.
It's very sad not only for the town but for the team who came back into the business when Music Zone shut and we all thought it as going to be ok.
I haven't worked with a nicer bunch of people and I wish Vicky,Andrew,Christian,Neil and Michelle all the very best.
