Am I losing my religion?
After talking with entwisi about the new Apple iPhone, which seems amazing to say the least (but lets keep this on topic, can make an iPhone devotee thread elsewhere), I discovered that I really do hate certain aspects of Capitalism with quite a passion.
He brought up that it wouldn't be out in Europe for another year and we assume there will be blocks in place to prevent importing, much like Sony tried to stop the importing of PSP's from Japan, and won in the courts. I feel its completely wrong, we should be able to obtain and use a product from another company if its usable here, not have it blocked if the only purpose of the block is marketing strategy for the company to increase profits. Now see im fighting the liberal cause here, but the other side of the argument being that these companies, Sony, Apple, are just trying to make a living on their end too, but should they be doing that at the expense of other peoples liberties? Its quite a hard subject because of course, without Apple or Sony we wouldn't have these products in the first place, but on the other hand their greed for more profits is driven by marketing strategy which usually sees a later European launch. Its just how they go about it that I personally have a problem with. |

same thing applies to the availibility prescription medicines

Re: Am I losing my religion?
Basic law of supply and demand. If its in demand and you can only supply a certain number then a higher price can be charged and people will buy. By making it rare and as they are a monopoly then they choose when to pass it on to the masses and with subtle marketing they create such a demand that people do pay the mad prices charged.
Does that make any sense to you? |
Re: Am I losing my religion?
Disillusioned with capitalism?
You'll be throwing away your blue rosette and spouting from Chairman Mao's Little Red Book next.:D Don't forget that I foresaw this happening ages ago.:D |

Re: Am I losing my religion?
Of course people/companies can also price themselves out of the market by charging more than people are willing or able to pay - then if a rival can produce a more affordable alternative they lose the market completely.
|
Re: Am I losing my religion?
Just rivals can't produce alternatives because companies patent the best ideas. Like the apple ipod, its not the best mp3 player, but I have to admit its certainly the best interface I have used because of the click wheel, which nobody can copy.
Apple have 200 patents protecting technology on the iPhone :p |
Re: Am I losing my religion?
I think you should take holy orders Cyfr, the cut and thrust of business does not seem to be the path for you, it's not your religion you'll loose it's your mortal soul, the economics of Mr Mickawber don't apply in real life, only in fiction novels. :D

Re: Am I losing my religion?
Although I really don't see the interest in this modern technology for the price charged (my kids and their I-pods (what's wrong with the radio), kids with cellphones, etc.) I may have a solution.
When/if I make it over this spring, I'll slip a few of these must haves in my luggage for ya. Of course I'd have to make a handy profit (ya know Capitalism):D (just kidding). I'd get em to you at my cost. Although, buying me rounds at the meet may be an acceptable tip!:p No seriously, if this is an interest to anyone over there, just tell me what to get and I'd be more then happy to get em to ya! Re: Am I losing my religion?
with the price of kit normally 1$=1£ on tech stuff this could be quite a saving. You do need to be careful though Brian, UK C&E will be very interested in a man coming over with 3 suitcases full of electronic stuff.

Re: Am I losing my religion?
There making them that small now Ian, I'm sure Brian will find somewhere on his anatomy to hide a few of these:D

Re: Am I losing my religion?
Geez, I wasn't thinking of this becoming some type of "Midnight Express" caper!:D Shouldn't be much fuss about bringing a few items over. I can understand the nix on fruits, vegetables, and "pointed sticks!" Maybe I'd even hold off smuggling a baby corn snake in my jockeys for Chav.
I guess whatever I can somewhat legally (wink wink nudge nudge) get away with I'm game for. Heck, what's the worst that could happen . . . getting to spend sometime in one of your luxury jails with lots of visits from me Accyweb mates? Brian |
Re: Am I losing my religion?
Getting back on thread Cyfr, the best piece of advice ever given to myself, when first embarking on the rocky road of 'business' was, "the most essential tool that must be carried at all times is a jar of Vasilene".

Times Community Newspapers - Corn to Whiskey
Okay, back to the original thread . . . wait a minute . . . what the heck was the original thread? Well anywho: Okay, hope this article comes up for ya. Who wants cousin LYY to bring some real moonshine over to the April Meet? I've never tried it but just saw this article in the local paper. Boy, I could do some real hard time for smuggling this stuff in eh? How exciting! Actually, I wonder if that would be illegal to do? Brian |

Will you be really coming over for the April meet? Cool. Will you be without internet access, and be unable to play the quizes? Even cooler.:D |
Re: Am I losing my religion?
Where do you these avitars from garinda? are they from your 'miss' spent youth:D sorry about the thread wander Cyfr.

As for the April meet, I do hope to get over (a friend of mine who flies to London each month for a week has some frequent flyer miles to give me). The strong pound is nice for you guys but is a killer for me. As far as bringing Moonshine over, I imagine at 100 proof, it'd be fairly difficult to get it through with my carry on eh? Finally, Rindy, anytime you'd want me to drop out of the quizzes let me know. Doing the Accyweb along with Global is kinda hard on me anyhow. Then when once again complained about possible inappropriate behavior, it'd be easy to dash it all anyhow. There's some quite insecure whiners playing the trivia and it gets abit burdensome. That's why Annello (Annie), whose got her father's (my) stubborness, won't play any more. So I guess the whiners win eh? Babbling Brian |
Re: Am I losing my religion?
It'll be great to meet you, as I was unwell when Mez organised the meet LYY mini-meet last summer.
Will be sending a list of grits and vittles.:D |

I had only been on Accyweb a couple of weeks before that meet. It was understandable the lack of interest in the "American Cousin Coming Home." Of course meeting Mick, Mez, Harwood Red, as well as almost meeting Cherokee, was probably what kept me involved with Accyweb! So, should they be given a grand Award or Tarred and Feathered?? Brian |
