Re: hey up snows coming!!
Earlier this morning as I walked down the garden path to my car, which incidentally had an engine compartment that was registering –6 C, I heard a whimpering that seemed to be coming from last years decaying plant leaves along side the path.
Thinking that some animal had crept in to hide because it was injured, I carefully eased aside the rotting leaves and saw, to my amazement, three brass monkeys. Instead of covering their eyes, ears and mouth their hands were elsewhere. Instantly recognising their predicament, as gently as I could, I picked them up and their disconnected accoutrements and headed back indoors. By now I was frozen to the marrow so a quick five minutes in the fridge warmed me enough to tackle the problem in hand. I don’t have a welding kit and even if I had I wouldn’t know what to do with it apart from possibly setting my flat on fire. But I am red hot with a soldering iron. The table was cleared and in the glare of the overhead light I surveyed my task. Now brass monkeys are hardy creatures so they wouldn’t need an anaesthetic, which was a help, as there was only me to administer to their needs. The first task was to clean the separated parts with some ‘crocus’ paper. I figured that even the finest ‘emery’ paper would be too rough. With a shaking hand I set about the delicate task and the brass monkeys just sat there watching me. Well two of them did because they had all resumed their natural positions. Clean and bright I was now ready to perform the delicate part or rejoining the monkeys with their separated parts. The soldering iron was nice and hot as a wipe on a damp sponge confirmed and I reached for a tin of flux. That’s with an el and an ex not a ck and without an el. But the job was too small so I reached for a reel of resin-cored solder instead. You could almost feel the tension in the room, except that it was empty apart from the unfortunate creatures and me. With a hand that shook more than I was happy with the bits and pieces were tinned to my satisfaction. Now came the tricky bit. Holding two parts together whilst applying sufficient heat with the soldering iron so that the tinning on both parts would melt and intermingle and then keeping everything stock still so that the solder cooled and solidified. By now sweat was pouring down my face with the fervent concentration and heat from the iron but somehow I managed to bring a smile to the monkey’s faces as the task in hand was completed. The three brass monkeys were restored and will sit in a dark cupboard until the spring when I will send them merrily on their way. |

It said it would be foggy on sunday - where is the fog - that was yesterday. My sis when she came to pick me up at Blackburn casualty said it was really nice coming over the tops there was a thick blanket of fog over accy and blackburn and yet she came over grane road and there wasnt any - she could see Darwen Tower coming over. Even when we came over the top road coming home past the coach & horses, brown cow etc, there was a bit of a fog blanket over accy. But clear where we were.

Re: hey up snows coming!!
Beginning to get very annoyed now, nowhere does it mention on the following metcheck weather warning the name Accrington. Is it going to happen or not?
Forecasters Warning -- Sleet, Snow & Ice -- Areas Affected: England & Wales This is an update to the earlier issued Severe Weather Watch. Confidence is growing for a significant spell of snow across England and Wales especially during the course of Thursday. While there remains uncertainties, primarily because of what is a very complex meteorological event, confidence is now high enough to increase the Weather Watch to an Advanced Weather Warning. An approaching low pressure and its associated surface frontal zones will approach England and Wales from the West - Southwest during the early hours of Thursday. This area of sleet and snow will then progress Northwards during the day bringing some prolonged and significant snow anywhere from the M4 corridor Northwards especially. The Northern extent of where the snow will progress to still has some uncertainty surrounding it, but at the moment it would seem as though it will reach Southern parts of Northern England. Exact amounts of snow still remain hard to comment on and further information over the coming days is certainly needed but there is scope for several centimeters of snow, especially over higher ground. Winds will also be on the increase with a moderate to strong Southeasterly wind developing bringing the risk of drifting snow, especially over high ground. Further updates to follow... |

Blame me Rindy - every time they keep forcasting snow I keep praying it won't! I have doctors appointments and things but if it snows I can't get there because I can't walk when it's slippery. It takes me all my time to balance when there isn't ice and snow! :D
I've just had a nasty letter telling me off for not attending the hospital last week but they'd never even notified me of the appointment. Maybe you're supposed to be telepathic these days. ;) |

Re: hey up snows coming!!
What’s all the fuss about a bit of snow? I appreciate that for some people it will make life difficult but its unlikely to last for more than a few days. Imagine living in Norway, Sweden, Finland and central Europe where the packed snow and ice on the roads can be as much as 10 inches thick and last for several weeks.
The last time that it snowed I had over six feet of snow on the path from my front door to the road and it never bothered me. I’ll grant you that it was just one snowflake deep, a yard wide and about 10 feet long.   OK! You get up one morning and look out of the window and see your car (if you have one) resembles a giant snowball. How do you set about getting rid of the snow? I use a long soft brush and brush the snow onto the kerb. I start with the roof, then the windscreen, then the back window, the bonnet and then the offside doors and windows. Lastly the nearside doors and windows.:D |
Re: hey up snows coming!!
But I wouldnt live in any of them places, because of the simple reason..... I hate Snow!!!!!!!!!!!:D
Roll on Summer!! I love the Sun!!! http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...683/images.jpg |
Re: hey up snows coming!!
Interesting to note that the forcasting site, Metcheck are reporting unusual loads on their server and the Met Office site is "temporarily unavailable". Why is it that the threat of a bit of seasonal weather gets everyone in this country into such a panic?
And... while I am on the subject, Dianne Oxbury (or whatever her name is) who does the forcast on the BBC regional news should be sacked. Many is the time I have listened to her tell us that it is raining, only to look out of the window and find that it is not. Many is the time that I have also noted that she has changed her forecast after the event. On Greater Hamildon we have a weather radar which takes a 360 degree look at precipitation and reports it's findings direct to London, by radio, every fifteen minutes. There is absolutely no excuse for getting the weather forecast for this region wrong as often as she manages to do. If one did not know better one might suspect that she was in the employ of HBC. |

Re: hey up snows coming!!
Have you tried pulling it flashytart? Awkward I know but when the going gets tough it is always easier to pull than to push. That’s why front wheel drive cars fare better than rear wheel drive cars in rough terrain. Stuck in the snow. Try reversing out instead of trying to drive forward unless your car is front wheel drive.
Which reminds me: a small boy was walking along the road pulling a short length of rope behind him. The local smart Alec says to him, “Lost your dog?” “No!” “Well why are you pulling that rope?” “Have you tried pushing it?”:Banane30: Good answer Tinkerbelle. If it snows overnight I will know the minute that I wake up without looking outside. |

Re: hey up snows coming!!
Woo hoo!!:Banane22: . Not to cause any envy for you snow lovers but we got 3 - 4 inches overnight. Annie, Joshua and I will get the sled, tubes and boards out and go sledding in the pasture.
Couple of questions. Why do you guys refer to it as sledging. Di you call the double railed item a sledge then? I noted flashy talking about her pramming. Do you call both a "stroller" (kid carrier)" as well as a "shopping cart" a pram? Thanks Accywebbers for your continued help with my introduction to the Queen's English! Brian I just started a new thread with these questions so this thread stays on thread! |

Re: hey up snows coming!!
Although it was already dark, just had to try out our hill. Too dark for the sled so I figure I'd try one of the kid's boogie type board. For some insane reason, sprayed the bottom with WD-40 (a light oil spray).
As I headed down the hill, instantly turn backwards on me. Then proceeded to head off track and into a rock pile. Had to admit it was a pretty fair wipeout. Had better luck the next couple of runs! |
Re: hey up snows coming!!
Next time Brian try some Duck Oil, or Goose Grease on your 'Boogie Board' to ensure a good take off, and maybe give the rock pile a 'break':D. "Happy sledging", regards Ian.
