Are there too many taxi's in accrington?

i was drivin home from work at around half 2 three and the queue of hackney cabs went all up the taxi rank - past the library on both sides and spilling over into cannon st - i was just astonished at the line up

fairly there was a few cars that were parked up but not many

should there - or is there - a quota that the council sets for the amount of taxi's? just a huge ridiculous amount of cabs...

far too many... also what really winds me up is " how much do you normally pay" all cabs should have clocks in then you know where you stand ( or sit)

I have yet to pay the same fare when going home....

When is a taxi not a taxi - when it's a private hire vehicle.

Yes there do seem to be an over abundance of them on the taxi rank at times don't there?

I think if you took all the taxis off the road which are not road worthy there would substancially (sp) less of them driving about...and I have never before in my life ever haggled a taxi price like you do down here...
me - so how much is that ?
driver ' much do you normally pay ?'
me - bout £4..
driver ' call it £4.50
me - £3.50
driver - £3.75
me..err ok...??
..I wouldnt dream of doing it in glasgow as I would either get locked in a drove to the police station or given a punch on the chin for being a cheeky beggar !....

That really bugs me too.

'How much is that please?

'What do you normally pay boss?'

'A pound.'

Silence.

'It'll be three fifty then boss.'

All cabs/taxis should have meters in my opinion.

Our taxis are supposed to be 3 years old or under but that rule differs from council to council, i dont tink blackburn taxis have an age limit

It's not to bad in town you can get one for between £2.50-£3.00 a pal of mine get's one to Haslingden for a fiver, what realy bugs me is if they know and the usualy do know, there is no, or a poor bus sevice to the destination ie; Royal Blackburn Hospital and similar places they really screw you, the best thing to do is ask the boss for a price. As for the age do the taxis over 3 years old not have to have an extended MOT, (taxi test)?

Re: Are there too many taxi's in accrington?

I'd rather have loads of taxis than none at all. In Glasgow it was murder, sometimes literally, to get a cab after a night out.

At least we never have to wait long to get one.:)

It would be interesting to know what percentage of these cash fares from non metered cabs are declared for tax and National insurance purposes and also how many of these drivers are drawing other state benefits

3 easy steps.....

Yellow plate on the back

license badge round drivers neck ( with picture on)

and company name badges on side of car.

If you're ever un-sure, take driver name and number and don't get in.

Sometimes find that its getting to convenint to get a cab instead of a short walk to the bus stop or walking anywhere for that matter.A bit expensive too.Yesterday,on my Saturday afternoon trawl round Accys pubs i forked out £9 on taxis.Thats my only gripe with Taxis, and its good to see these spot checks taking place to take unsafe cabs off the road.
