Council Houses
Just read in the paper about how the government have to build more council houses..... Tell you what, instead, tell people to stop having children too young, find contraception and grow up, get a god damned education, get a career and a life... Simple.

Re: Council Houses
What has that got to do with building more council houses?
Probably more to do with, People cant afford to get on the property ladder and are forced to rent. |

Seriously,I agree that the rising property prices have priced a lot of people, particularly first time buyers, out of the market. |
Re: Council Houses
I had an education, a career, and a child, all at the same time. I am eternally grateful that in my old age I got the chance to have a council flat.
The housing price bubble will burst soon, because they are now unaffordable for 1st time buyers (even people in well paid jobs struggle). When there is no-one at the bottom to buy, the buying chains freeze to a standstill, and prices will drop. More 'social housing' will enable the elderly (such as me) to downsize and free up larger homes for families. |
Re: Council Houses
Also to add I would love to live in a council house, if there was one available and in a good area.
Fair rent, much better that Private rented housing. In this area most cheap housese are being bough by landlords, if the trend continues there will be no hope for us first time buyers. |
Re: Council Houses
Of course I don't think all occupants if council houses are what I said... But apparently there's a 2 million on the waiting list for council houses, so they have to build more.... which tax payers wil have to pay for... It wouldn't hurt to teach the generation to fend for themselves a little more instead of having hard working people paying for it
Lea x I'm not talking about the elderly either |

Someone on benefits can claim for housing benefit for any rented house, not just council houses.

Re: Council Houses
Most elderly people really appreciate council houses. The areas where those type of house are (bungalows with the railings outside) type house are worth the money and let elderly people keep their independance.
Its a general misconception by some adults aswell that have a good job and education and a house in a nice expensive area that council house dwellers just have no education or jobs. Its not just students who make mistakes with conceptions like that, alot of the time its their parents who have given them these ideas. |
Re: Council Houses
I can assure you my parents have said no such thing to me....

Re: Council Houses
My mum is currently trying to escape from her 'owned for 54 years' house into council accomodation up near me so I can care for her more easily. We've been told the waiting list is > 70 years. The reason she needs to move are manyfold but one of the biggest is the number of yobs that have moved into what was a nice area, with music blaring till 3-4 am, drinking and the noise/behaviours that that brings etc.

Re: Council Houses
i think council houses are becoming more desirable than a lot of private landlord houses councils are kicking more and more people off the estates and they then end up renting wich then wrecks streets that were once nice and private
|
Re: Council Houses
Some of the private landlords are sharks too. They don't take maintenance seriously and expect top rate of rent for some decrepit old ruin.

That sounds like my mums landlord. Waste of space she is too. They always try to send out their friends as plumbers and stuff to do maintenance checks on the boiler  we stopped letting them in. |
Re: Council Houses
well i must agree there are teenager,s are haveing children nower days and this is why i think the house,s are hard to get and you are put on a long waiting list for them so ,i think this is why they are trying to put more home,s up as fast as they can.

Re: Council Houses
There is no council property in Accrington.
|
Re: Council Houses
Flats are not suitable for housing anyone with young children-
1- how do you get a pram/pushchair up a stairwell when the lift breaks down 2- children and balconies/high windows are hazardous 3- babies cry, naturally, and flat dwellers need to take care with noise levels. |
Re: Council Houses
Is there not? That's surprising.I thought there would be some.
|
Re: Council Houses
There is ex-council property.
|
Re: Council Houses
I am in an ex council flat - Hyndburn Homes is a housing association which took all council housing over in 2006

The only thing that would be a problem in my opinion is the lift idea, which is easily solved by well maintained lifts. The noise would be just as bad in a row of terraced houses. Maybe we could build bungalows then for the old people and the teenage pregnant girls. I dont really think the councel really think into much depth about what people really want, as long as they are housed and not a statistic adding to homelessness. Not like they dont manipulate that aswell though. |
Re: Council Houses
Sound travels through floors and ceilings in flats a lot more than it does through the walls of terraced houses.

That is something to ask about if you ever are contemplating buying a terraced house. Here the flats are occupied by singles and if there is noise they dont mind being told, and take heed. There are always headphones :) - ideal for a quiet life with your own sounds. |

Re: Council Houses
We have some nice solid walls in our houses here. I never hear a baby cry but I do hear music in the bathroom. A friend of mine who lived in a flat could hear every footstep of the woman upstairs. I suppose it generally depends on how well built the building is.

Re: Council Houses
I often hear my neighbours on both sides, but I am lucky to have a really good private landlord and I am staying put ! I don't mess him about with the rent and I keep the place relatively tidy and he makes sure any repairs are done on time and done properly . It's shame there aren't more like him .

Re: Council Houses
It did say nationally that they have to build more council homes.
Up here property and rent is a lot cheaper. Down in London where I lived 5 years ago I was paying £750 monthly for a 1 bed flat. To buy a terrace it would have cost £140,000. Down there and when I moved to Oxford All me and my wife could afford was council accommodation (I was and am, earning and in the civil service, but the government pay means in most areas accommodation is unaffordable). |
Re: Council Houses
maybe the council are gonna build more houses as well is because people cant afford to buy houses these days, so they have to rent! thats why there is more people on the list!
|

Yeh margaret aswell thats why I mentioned the noise of terraced houses. ours doesnt have the cavity thing ither and its just echoes everything through and my neighbours have dogs that bark all the time. Luckily we're on a corner so its just noise from one side of neighbours though! |
Re: Council Houses
The council won't build anymore houses for the simple reason they don't do council houses anymore.
Social housing is built by the various housing associations and don't Hynburn council currently have a block on building new houses, preferring instead for the HA's to renovate/convert old housing ? |
