Last time you saw an Horse 'n' cart on the streets

trying to remember the last time I saw a horse and cart in the Hyndburn area (excepting Thwaites brewery drays, are they still around ?) . Think the last one I remember around the Gt Harwood area was during the early 60s, a rag and bone chap called Basil , think he was from bottom end of Clayton. Also maybe a coal chap who worked out of the station coal yard in front of the Royal pub.
Thinking about it , the demise of the rag chap probably coincided with demise of the donkey stoning the front step.

thread should maybe in the nostalgia section ,
thx. ;) ;)

Gosh it must be so long ago I can't remember when.

I do remember Jackson's milk deliveries by horse, and Albert Birtwell with his "Hi Scream Here".

OK - you seem to have got it 'straight from the horses mouth' :)
Bill Sledden kept a couple of horses in a field near me until vandals burnt the stable a couple of years ago. He used to be visited by a mate who had a 'horse and trap' - was nice to see it go past my window.

My next door neighbour, Pendy's cousin, used to ride up and down in a pony and trap in the eighties, and used to go as far as Appleby Fair.

I think it was also in the eighties that Jackson's stopped delivering the milk by horse drawn wagon. I remember they used to trim the horse and cart up with flowers each May Day.

That would be Basil Brierly; he had a junk yard just off Lower Barnes St. He and his wife ran a shop on Barnes St. He used to pop into the Village Blacksmith for a pint. I remember having coal delivered by horse and cart, and milk from Ringstonhalgh farm off the end of Rishton Rd. I think that a family called Swale owed the farm which had probably been there at least from Domesday times.

Re: Last time you saw an Horse 'n' cart on the streets

This is a funny thread, the last one I saw was in ossy yesterday around 7 o'clock when I was waiting for the bus. Again it was probably the same one already mentioned thats small and cars struggle to get around it on the road.
I personally think its a hazard as its not easy to see really.
I know theres more than one horse and cart owner in ossy though, i've seen some women on a bigger one about 2 month or so back aswell.

Re: Last time you saw an Horse 'n' cart on the streets

I don't know if this counts, but I saw a massive pile of steaming horse turds in the middle of Ontario St. today! I didn't see the perp, or his cart; but it is wedding season and the guys from Wolfe Island bring over thier horses and carts to give drunken wedding guests a safe and celebratory ride.

I'm not sure but do the Amish in their horse drawn buggies count? I often see them especially when driving up in Pennsylvania and the Shenadoah Valley (my happy place).

Re: Last time you saw an Horse 'n' cart on the streets

I remember the Rag'n'Bone man coming round when I was little -used to scare me -must have been the bones! i reckon he stopped around mid-1970's.
Also remember Dolly who pulled Jackson's milk delivery cart too - do you remember the white horse they had before -think his name was Bobby... we had many an anxious moment getting past them on Dill hall Lane too on our way to school in Ossy! Mr. Jackson's accident was during a terrible storm in about 1978 I think -I was out on my pool round (Littlewooods pools and Spot the Ball!) that evening too on Dill Hall Lane and the council estate, and if i'm not mixing up 2 separate incidents a group of teenagers were struck by lightening that day on St. Cristopher's playing fields - I think one was killed unfotunately....
As for other horses and carts, my nanna , who lived on Exchange Street told me about them getting deliveries of coal down the backs by a cart - I remember a lorry coming down until about 1978 when they got a gas fire...perhaps someone else remembers the coalman...?
I know my Grandad's family had a horse and trap (they lived on Rockmount in Altham) because his sister , my great aunt Lucy once told me about their yearly "holiday" at Whitsuntide down to Whalley Nab for a picnic -women and small children aboard and all the others alongside -apparently it took a whole day there and back! Imagine that!!!

Yes i can rembber when they came down cross street in osw and you got a donkey stone off them to do your door step in it but i am still young.

MargaretR 12-09-2007 15:37

Re: Last time you saw an Horse 'n' cart on the streets

Donkey stones were 'pride of the doorstep'

Eric 12-09-2007 17:37

Re: Last time you saw an Horse 'n' cart on the streets

I remember when the women would stone the step and sometimes the flags. It was true Lancashire pride ... maybe you lived in an old terraced house, but the step was always stoned (now it's the kids that are always stoned) and the front door was immaculate, the knocker and the mailbox polished ...

Going off thread in a light hearted manner,I am quite convinced that the last animal I saw on the street was a pink Elephant, pulling a brightly coloured cart, If anyone reading this post doubted the fact that there is such a thing as re-incarnation, start beleiving now.If you can read this I am still alive.:D

I've just seen two shire horses pulling a wedding carriage. The horses looked brilliant, they even had flowers in the same colours as the brides woven into their manes. They really did look magnificent.
