Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
Lancashire United bus company have banned some types of baby buggy and wheelchairs from travelling on their buses!
They have even gone so far as to suggest that people purchase new pushchairs or wheelchairs and consult the bus company before buying them. One mother from Darwen who was refused yesterday (despite the fact that she has travelled the route many times before Lancashire United took over) will now have to fork out for a new Lancashire United approved buggy or she won't be able to take her older child to school! These particular buses are designed for prams and wheelchairs for crying out loud and it won't be an option for some people to buy another one just so they can travel. Is this discrimination? Should they be allowed to discriminate in this way? |
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
the way i see this is if we arnt aloud on busses with prams then thay should help buy a new pram but what do we do who has a double buggy everything is eithr becoming a crime or its just banned so now a lot of people are going to have to either pay for a taxi or wal wich isnt fair

Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
when i get the bus there is always a buggy or wheelchair on.was driver having a bad day or was she trying to get on with a COACH built pram?

Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
There's just been a very vociferous spokesman from the Health and Safety wadjamacallums saying that Lancashire United have no right to say that buggies and wheelchairs are not allowed for H&S reasons as they are allowed on the same model of bus run by other companies and he said he would guarantee that if a H&S inspector were to look into it he would find no reason for banning them as they have already passed H&S checks before being sold for the purpose they are used for and the purpose includes travelling on public transport! Ooh he wasn't half having a go at the bus company!:D

Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
paula radcliff made three wheel buggy populer she use to train with her new born in one they must be very safe she used to run 8 to 10 miles a day pushing one
|
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
I remember her saying they were more stable when going round a bend that a 4 wheel buggy because with a 4 wheeler sometime two wheels come off the ground if the buggy is heavily laden and then it's only half as stable and can fall over sideways but with a 3 wheeler only one wheel would come off the ground so it's always got two thirds on the ground which is majority on the ground and less likely to fall over. Only she put it a lot better than that.

Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
Ian thinks about watching the robin reliant racing where they all fitted wheels to the driver and passenger doors becasue they spent just as much time on their sides as they did on their wheels

Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
:D You sound just like that Health & Safety spokesman this morning. I could fairly imagine steam coming out of his ears!

Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
my daughter didnt have a pass when we first moved so i told her to take her passport to prove her age even with her school uniform on they still mayed her pay full fair the driver said it didnt prove anything only a pass could do that
|
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
Now that is absolutely stupid. Of course the passport proves her age.
|
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
my daughters always being asked for a pass, because she looks over 14, but she is not, and they look at her as if she is a liar!!
why should i payfor a pass to prove my daughters age?? they should be letting em have them for free, its just another way of L.U making more money! |
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
This is pathetic. If anyone tried to tell me what pram to buy i'd go mad!!! I live in Ossy but sometimes its actually quicker to walk to town than get the bus. Much healthier too!! lol.

Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
sorry to put the cat amongst the pidgeons but its a good move, according to lancs utd health and safety rules only 3 buggies are allowed on a bus at any one time, but how many times have you got on a bus and you cant get passed because there are more than 3 on,they block the bus aisle up and are dangerous they some times even dont use the front spaces which are designated for them and as for trying to get past one to get of its nearly impossible, and yes i am a parent who has in the past put a buggy on the bus and unless there is sufficient room on there i have many times had to wait for the next bus,

I've never tried to get my buggy (a 3 wheeler) onto a bus, fortunately I live close enough to walk, though I do agree to some extent with L U, the 3 wheeler (well Quinny Buzz) is quite easy to unbalance, if you hit a large stone or the kerb wrong it does nearly tip up, this of course could just be my steering:)

This wasn't about the number of buggies. Hers was the only one. The Health and Safety spokesperson said there is no reason why such buggies should not be transported by bus. In fact he got quite uptight about that particular model of bus being designed for that very purpose. I do agree that when the buggy/wheelchair area is full then they shouldn't try to cram more on because it is difficult trying to get past them. I had a struggle one day and the mother tutted at me as if it was my fault for having shopping bags. Walking is all very well if it's within walking distance but if it's several miles then the mother probably needs to get home quicker. |
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
I walked almost everywhere with my big, coach built pram when my children were babies. If I needed to get back earlier - I set out earlier. I was very fit - all that walking - and my babies were very healthy - all that fresh air. :)
Of course people with buggies do need to travel by bus, sometimes, but don't the modern buggies fold flat? Are we talking about the large, ultra-padded things that seem to have replaced the pram, even for new-borns? I had a "push-chair" when mine were toddlers. Not plush and not particularly stylish but it supported their backs and it folded easily to fit on a bus or in a car boot. Oh well, things change don't they? But I think life, in this respect, was less complicated for me than for today's mums. |
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
I thought those baby slings were a brilliant idea when they came out - for babies ,not toddlers, or back strain would be likely.
You rarely see a baby crying when in one of them because they can hear their mother's heartbeat, like a continuous cuddle. |
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
These baby buggies are a public nuisance; the transport company should use their common sense and ban the lot. After a hard day's work I want a peaceful bus ride back to my local pub. What do I get? A trip from hell, all due to these unsociable women and their screaming little brats making as much noise and taking up as much room as they can. Result? My first three or four pints ruined. Well, if this lot can afford babies, they can afford taxis - get 'em off public transport. They might even consider walking and maybe even lose some weight at the same time.

If this is what you believe you clearly have not got children, or never look after them. I can afford to get taxis, but I would not risk it without a child seat. I have a small pram and don't take up much room on the bus. And I walk a lot of places! If you can afford to go to the pub everyday, then you can afford a taxi - keep moaning drunks off public transport!! |
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
2/10, poor effort, you should really have been paying attention lately T, theres been enough practice going on... :D

Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
Its the 4 wheeled buggies that are allowed. Theres new types of buggies with 3 wheels where the on at the front is very small and I guess they must have failed some sort of crash test on the bus?
I've never seen anyone refused on the bus with one though, its a little OTT to tell someone they cant get on the bus. Why didnt the driver just suggest to fold down the buggy? |

Do we know *why* they are banned? Has anyone asked Lancashire United?
|
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
Yes - they claim they are unstable and against 'health and safety'. The H&S bods say they are not.

Take a Reliant Robin and a similar sized four wheeled car like a mini. At a given speed and tightness of turn the Reliant Robin will start to roll over before the four wheeled car. Remember how easy it was to turn over a three wheeled trike when trying to corner too tightly? However having said all that if the H&S deem a three wheeled buggie to be safe then that is that and the bus company need to think again. |
Re: Pushchairs and Wheelchairs could be banned from bus travel?
Hmm well 3 legged chairs are more stable than 4 legged ones.

Is that why you can no longer buy three wheeled office chairs and most are either four or more likely five wheeled chairs? |
