Is Accrington likely to flood?

Check out this site to see if your area is in danger of flooding.

Up here we seem to be pretty safe but the roundabout under the viaduct looks to be the focus of most of the water.

Scaitcliffe House looks none too safe either. I wonder if PB & Co have got any dinghies.

PB can walk on water, wouldn't need a boat :D

At least his office is on the top floor, maybe he will have to be rescues by a Sea King helicopter like on TV the other day.

It's just made me think about that posh new building that's going up next to the lodge down there! :D Great selling point for flats - overlooking Accrington' flood plain!

Looks like I just miss out, the area around the viaduct and the dip in Church going down Henry St just about save me, But the Bridge Inn looks at risk, likely that they may have to sell some watered down beer if it does happen.:D

It will take a lot before we flood here chez Whisp. I'm rather glad now that we didn't move to Morecambe.

Re: Is Accrington likely to flood?

It is only about a year since the bridge over Tinker Brook (on the other side of the woods behind me) had to be rebuilt. That flood website shows that the new housing built on the old site of Three Brooks Mill is in a flood risk area.

Re: Is Accrington likely to flood?

We are probably least at risk up here, ( well 2 foot less of a risk than Tinks :D ). It's about a million feet above sea level :)

Hope we dont get floods.

Cause me more work.

Some insurers class Henry Street area as high risk.

Re: Is Accrington likely to flood?

We narrowly avoided a flood once and it must have been way back in the 60s. We lived in Sultan St. The other houses got water coming in the front doors but ours had two steps up for some reason - the only one that did - and it just came in a teeny little bit and settled in a well where the doormat was inset.

Re: Is Accrington likely to flood?

i remember comin along blackburn road back then towards west end and all the water was gushin down there and going into ppls houses

some ppl managed to set up some sorta barricade but others didndt realise how bad it was or werent home

Re: Is Accrington likely to flood?

Willow, how on earth did you get flooded on Sultan Street ? It's on a decent slope ( well it better be!) Also the River Hyndburn goes under the ex Music Zone store before it hits Wilco's,remember looking at it thru an inspection pit thing when they resurfaced Broadway t'other year . It was a fairly long way down before you hit water, mind you it was in July !

Don't ever remember any flooding in Hyndburn in my time. Had a friend lived in those cottages opposite the Hynburn Bridge Pub down Clayton .. she had a couple of disasters there .. but they seem to have sorted it now.

Re: Is Accrington likely to flood?

I remember posting before on AW, somewhere deep in the virtual annals, of how we got caught in a flash flood, on the road between the Moat House and Brownhill.

It'd been a beautiful summer's day when the heavens just opened. People were laughing at us, as the speed boat we were towing, started to float at the back of the car. When we got back to Ossy, there hadn't even been a spot of rain.

The water was rushing down the street like a river. We were on the bottom row. Across the bottom of Sultan Street in those days there was a huge wall of buildings (3 houses at the top of the row in Water Street just before the garage) some of it was a joiners shop, I think some of it may even have been related to the garage going back behind the houses. We used to garage our car in there in a big communal space.

Anyway these rushing rivers of water coming down the streets went hurtling on down the likes of Water Street which went right into town but it hit the wall of this building at the bottom of Sultan Street and bounced back on itself creating huge waves which came above the doorsteps of houses and entered therein, all apart from ours.

It got worse too because water was also running underneath the road and it must have hit the foundations of the building and bounced back in the same way. It forced its way up through the cobble stones and made a right mess of the road. It was like a mini volcano coming up through the river!
