A similar report last September suggesting the prison should be closed also states;

Quote:

42% said it was easy to obtain illegal drugs.
Presumably the cockroaches carried them in then :)

We need to keep prisoners healthy so that when they come out they wont be spreading disease among the law abiding population, and be fit to work, so do not continue to draw off the state for their keep. Vermin go hand in hand with many diseases.
The original principal of having a free for all health service was so that infectious/contagous diseases would not be spread amongst the whole population by sick persons who had no money to pay for treatment.

They do have prision doctors & can be duely escorted to hospital if the need be, again the media print the situation as to dramatistical effect.

I thought we were a civilised society and prison was intended for reform, not for keeping offenders in inhumane conditions.
I'm not saying they should have an easy ride at all, but offenders still deserve basic human rights.

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

Example.

A convicted tobacco smuggler gets three months inside. He contracts Weil's disease, from coming into contact with food contaminated by rats. He's released, and enjoys a night of passion with the missus, and because it can be transfered via semen, she also contacts this disease, which can kill. Therefore her human rights have also been affected.

Although I'm certainly not in favour of prison being a place of comfort, I do believe a civilised society should strive to ensure prisons are at least sanitary.

correct shaker,i'm saying though its low priority compared to other things, prisoners do get basic human rights, for instance if a con requires hospital treatment they aint put on a waiting list like you n me, they are treated within a couple of weeks sometimes even days, thats more rights than us.to me the money should be spent on improving the NHS for ALL people, i.e. cancer drugs that people cannot afford etc, as usual the press (as Mel said) are sensationalising this, people waiting months for treatment aint news its boring.some nicks are antiquated,no question,but theres "stuff" comes before improving there lot. and as for reform in an ideal world that would be great,but they do not reform very many,as statistics bear out,a very high % re-offend and return.

I agree with you there:).I wouldn't want to think that prisoners are living the life of Riley ( whoever he is:D) in our prisons but they should not be made to live in squalor.
