Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?

Have gone into this subject on many occasions in different threads and thanks Margaret, pulled that article down from your post on the other thread.

I have taken it into work for ammunition because I think the ladies I work with believe I make a fuss about nothing. Oh yes, and some of the aftershaves too gentlemen. My son sometimes wears one called Fahrenheit and have told him is b .. awful, but replies "Well, the ladies seem to appreciate it" ! No answer to that one, is there ?

It is really difficult, because even though my complaint is taken in good spirits, it is taken as a personal criticism to their choice in perfume.

Now I like perfumes, but some are so pungent it makes some of my working days unbearable. Within ten minutes of one of them walking into the office wearing one of these offensive perfumes, symptoms develop .. initially sneezing, then coughing, feeling so sick my stomach literally turns, can literally taste, smell on my cloths, flu symptoms, the list appears to be endless. Then within an hour of leaving the office, these symptoms have disappeared... can't wait to grab a fag .. :D They have the habit of reapplying at lunch time too ... :(

Don't even mention those dangly tree things in cars either .. particularly Vanilla. Someone used to put one in a pool car at work, which I used now and then for business trips .. immediately goes in the bin. One particular occasion only got to the railway bridge at Church and had to pull over because thought I might vomit in the car. Overcame it, but had to drive for a few hours with all the windows open !

Yes, I am with you on this Margaret.

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?

Well Neil you certainly gave me a challenge there .( I have no qualifications in chemistry)

Googling came up with so much info that this post would fill the page with web addresses. Fortunately I found one site which which is jampacked with links to scientific info. I spent 2 hours fast reading it and tried some of the many links, and didn't even get to scan half of it. If you have a week to spare you might be able to look at all the info provided

EHN's General Links / F

The canadian Lung Association had some useful sites too - where you can watch videos. Seems that 'Fragrance Free' hospitals and workplaces are being set up there. (Who'd have thought that the canadians would be aware of such a thing as air pollution - you know what I mean - having all those lovely trees)

The New Brunswick Lung Association - Workplaces

If after reading some of this ENORMOUS amount of info, you want to reduce the perfumes/poison in your home - try this link

Very grateful for all the info. Margaret, endorses all that I experience .. almost believed myself, at one stage, that it was in my imagination and a raving neurotic. x

Would love to show these to Health and Safety at work, but don't think I would be very popular .. need to keep my job for another 2 years at least. :(
Well, might just show it them .. they need to be kept up-to-date on what could be a future ban, eh ? :D

I know that you suffer too - hope that this info makes others think twice when buying such stuff.
I recently stocked up on bath products -
Sanctuary Spa creamy body wash (with Sandalwood and Patchouli oils)
Botanics Deep Clean Foam (with rice bran protein & honey)
- not cheap!!!
- now I see they have sodium laureth sulphate
I will boil up some soapnuts (cheaper) and put these fancy products away to use as prezzies (for people who don't know better ;) )

Must admit, don't have problems with body care products, soaps, shower creams, deodorants etc., .. just look for perfume free; cleaning products don't bother me either.

Interesting to note that the author of the original article in Margaret's first post isn't exactly unbiased; he /she would appear to own a busines prodcing these fragrance free products. "Tiger flag natural Perfumery "......

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?

I find that the oil based type perfumes don't bother me. It's the sprayed on and alcohol based ones which seem to be a problem. Somebody told me it had something to do with 'particulates' but I don't claim to be able to understand that. It seems like it's the smells you can taste which are the worst culprits. Of course not everyone is affected and the people who aren't think that those of us who are are just being a bit loopy.
