, onlymeanything has got to be better than the currect appearance
with a couple of caravans, loads of rubbish and a few dogs that roam.
There are at least five caravans there now, so the sooner they start building the better.

Surely something could be done about the caravans without building a Tesco?

The council don't seem to be doing anything about the caravans. They have been moved on numerous times. I for one would feel safer in my home if they could never get back on the land again!!! If that means building a Tesco store so be it.

Well I believe you, you seem to know.

The only time I've been there, I've seen about thirty people working there, tops.

Perhaps all the rest are filling sacks of money to send to Tesco heiress, and disgraced Tory politican, Dame Shirley Porter in Israel.;)

Yeah, I do believe Tesco and other supermarkets pay above the minimum wage, one thing that attracted me to once working for Asda.

But, I wouldnt like to see Tesco arrive in the town, it would be a shame for Asda to lose custom.

Re: Tesco Poll (With Poll this time!)

There you are Bonnyboy the difference between sell by and use by dates.

Is a shop allowed to sell food that has passed its 'sell by' date?

'Sell by' dates, like 'Display until' dates, are used by some shops to help staff know when they need to take food products off the shelves. It is up to the manufacturer or shop if it wants to put a 'Sell by' or 'Display until' date on packaged foods. But they must also have either a 'Use by' or 'Best before' date.

Since the 'Sell by' date is just a guide to shop staff, it isn't against the law to sell a food after it. However, shops mustn't sell foods that have passed their 'Use by' date. And you shouldn't eat foods after their 'Use by' date because they might not be safe to eat. 'Use by' dates are used on foods that go off quickly, such as milk, soft cheese, ready-prepared meals and smoked fish.

You will see 'Best before' dates on foods that last longer, such as frozen, dried or tinned foods. Shops are allowed to sell foods after their 'Best before' date (except eggs) and they will probably still be safe to eat.

But if you buy foods after their 'Best before' date, bear in mind that they might not be as good to eat as they were before. They might have started to lose their flavour or texture. The one food you shouldn't eat after its 'Best before' date is eggs. This is because eggs can contain salmonella bacteria, which could start to multiply after this date.

Anyone remember the film RoboCop?

How we laughed in the late 80's about a company controlling everything.

But look at now, I don't think there's anything you can't buy from Tesco (apart from specialist items and, let's be honest, they have to be bought on the internet now), even mortgages, insurance, mobile phone plans, yadda yadda.

Accrington already has : Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Netto and that place that used to be KwikSave.

Pretty soon, there will be only supermarkets and large chain retailers for anything else.

When we lose the freedom of choice, you watch the prices rise when there are no alternatives. Yes, there could be a supermarket "price war", I don't mind them selling groceries, but they want to sell EVERYTHING. And most of their "non core" offerings (Electricals etc) are not good quality, but simply cheap.

There's no way to stop it, but I remember when it used to be a joy to shop in Accrington, I think the only shop left that is independant and has class is Marsdens on Abbey Street.

Another Tesco, to match the 2 in haslingden and 1 in Blackburn. What's the big deal?
It'll happen if Tesco wants it to, as they have the money and muscle.

But I've started shopping in the market for meat and veg. The produce is better and cheaper, but put another Supermarket in the equation...

I suppose this rant isn't against Tesco in general, more the lack of choice we now have without going on the internet, where every town has the same shops with the same things.

I don't know why the government hasn't opened supermarkets where everyone gets minimum wage and everything is run at cost (plus Vat, we can't get away from that). The money will be in our pockets instead of the supermarkets.

Convenience has a lot to answer for :-)

I don't think you will lose that, you either shop there or you don't. Is that not freedom of choice.

What else would that site (old skill centre) be used for.

The Blackburn Tesco is getting past it's sell by date, so if the Accington Tesco gets built, the Tesco shoppers from Blackburn may visit the modern energy efficient Accrington Tesco, and who knows they may just walk down in to the town centre and spend a few bob there as well. :)

Perhaps for developing skills? Maybe for training people to do things other than be a cashier?

No offence to people that work at asda or in a store, but it aint exactly going to bring in the money.
If Accrington wants to do well, it needs to have better paid jobs as well as lower paid jobs. If everyone is paid low then the shops can only serve low paid people. This means the quality is not going to be good.

Training and education needs to be invested in, not bringing supermarkets into an already crowded market, to kill off the few sole traders we have. No matter how many jobs it brings in, its a waste, and can only mean the further demise of Accrington.
