Cards and Decorations

My elder daughter says she won't be sending Christmas cards this year and doesn't want to receive any. I see where she's coming from though, sometimes, it's the only contact with people you rarely see and I always add a note with mine when I send them.

I got to thinking about decorations. I put up a Christmas tree only because my granddaughter lives here, otherwise I wouldn't. Apart from that I lay a few sprigs of holly on the mantlepiece and put a couple of the nicest cards there too; the rest go into a large basket on top of a bookcase and, frankly, it wouldn't worry me if I didn't get any.

I'm not anti-Christmas but I like it to last for no more than a week (all decorations come down by Jan 2nd). To me it's all about having my family around me and keeping in touch with old friends. The decorations are just a nod towards festive tradition. How about you?

Re: Cards and Decorations

I'll dig the tree out as per on the 1st of December, it will be down come 2nd of January tho, it's boring by then and i want the house back to normal. Neighbours on the street have a little competition to see who can dress their front window best, it's all tongue in cheek and must admit I like to join in. I hate writing the cards out...always seem to get one on the 23rd from someone I missed off my list :o

All in all I like the season, It's not just for the kids. Must admit, i still do our house up for the daughter, she's 22 now :D Maybe I do it for myself in reality.

I'm glad when it's over though.........Roll on Summer :)

That's one less to post.:p

I'm in the middle of doing my cards, which I'll have to post this week, and it's a real main, mainly because I now struggle writing. So the people I don't see very often are getting an unsigned card, a printed note about what I've been up to this year, and best wishes.

I agree with Lesley. No cards for me please. I like the usual thread we have on here, sending season's greeting to all our Accy Web chums, and not just those we happen to see at the meets.

Plus, it's greener.:D

anything that makes the world a brighter place, if only for a few weeks is fine by me.... you never know one year the world may just find or remember the true meaning of Christmas...

Re: Cards and Decorations

Each year we have a minor conflict about when the tree and decorations go up. I personally would like everything to go up on Christmas Eve (make it a big festive event, put the tree out and pressies under it then put stuff out for Santa etc) and Chris would like them to go up at the beginning of December - no point asking the kids because they want them up some time in September. So, every year I hold out for as long as is possible with Chris and the kids bugging me to be allowed to put everything up. We end up compromising when I've finally had enough of the pressure!

As for cards - I think you should only send them to people that you're not giving presents to or likely to see. I also feel the same way about birthday cards - it's nice if someone doesn't give you a pressie if they remember your birthday with a card but why bother if your handing something over?

I'm not happy about xmas as i used to be years ago, now im only happy because my son is growing and cant wait his face when he opens his xmas presents.
I get fed up with xmas before the day arrives because people starts very early with decorations and buying presents and all that.
I remember my mum never used to put the xmas tree up until 5 or 6 days before xmas, we used to live our xmas tree up till january the 7th because is bad luck to take it before (aparently).
I get very sad at xmas because i wish i could be with my family, yeah i know i made the choice to come to live to england but that doesnt mean i cant miss them.
Anyway, xmas for me now is more for my son, cant wait to see his little face when he opens his presents

Decorations should actually be taken down by January the sixth, otherwise known as Epiphany, or Twelfth Night.

The 7th of January is known as my birthday, or in Cahy's case the day he has to remember to buy a birthday card for his Missus.:D

I agree with Gayle about when decorations should go up. I would prefer the few I have to go up on Christmas Eve. As it is, we don't put up anything to do with Christmas in the house until after my daughter's birthday, December 10th. Anyone born in December will know how their birthday can be swamped by the festive season.

Re: Cards and Decorations

I have a dilemma this year.......

I didn't put the tree up last year because we were away and I need a new tree because my old one was donkeys years old and had lost several branches. I would like to get a new one and I tend to put it up on about 20th Dec but........... Sparks reckons that we really don't need one, won't be in to appreciate it, have no room for one without moving furniture etc..

I have to say that although I can see his point, I do think that a few deccys brighted up the house.

I am therefore undecided about getting a new tree and it will probably be an impulse buy on Xmas Eve.

As for cards...... we don't bother at work and tend to give to the Hospice instead but I always send to family and friends, especially those who live abroad.:D

Yup, and the jews crucified the Russians ... lucky for England:D

And I will be doing the cards and the tree. I like the idea of sitting down with a bottle of rum and a litre of eggnog and filling out my cards with personal messages and greetings, written with a real fountain pen ... remember those, remember pens of any kind? ... I think it is much more personal than sending a dancing banana in a Santa suit. Of course, the last cards I write tend to be a little incoherent, but what the hell. Bring on another bottle of Pusser's. I go out with a few friends and a chainsaw to cut down our trees. (We still have a few left in Canada.) One of us will be designated driver and the rest of us (it was my turn to be DD two years ago) will drink to excess and play with the chain saw ... adds a little exitement to the day, but no guns allowed. Maybe you guys over there can take your chain saws up the Coppice and clean up those evergreens that you find offensive:D

Margaret Pilkington 20-11-2007 20:27

Re: Cards and Decorations

I don't think I will put the tree up this year......didn't do it last year, but that was because my living room ceiling fell in...we had to move into our front room and there wasn't room to f....break wind.
This year we had rellies over from Oz which meant a major flit round in the back bedroom which is used as my computer room. Imoved the computer desk up against the cupboard that houses the tree and decs...and to be honest, I can't be faffed to shift everything round to get into the cupboard.

As for cards, I send far fewer than i used to do...as a result I receive fewer too....less to fall down, less to put away...less for the children to cut up after Christmas.

Eric 20-11-2007 21:29

Re: Cards and Decorations

Oh, and I also put lights on the maple tree in front of my house. Lots of folks over here do that. And the city utility workers put lights on the trees in City Park in front of the old Frontenac County courthouse. Many decorate the outsides of their homes ... using environmentally friendly lights of course ... and people drive and walk around the city just to look at all the colors and the occasional creativity. The Wolfe Islander ferry is all decorated, with lights and a big ho ho hat on the mast, and even the city buses and many of the taxis have christmas ribbons on them.

I'll bring the chain saw (try explaining that one at Heathrow) and you guys supply the booze.:D

It might have something to do with the weather ... it isn't really Christmas without the snow and the (very) crisp weather. When we cut our trees a few years back, we had to use snowshoes to get close to the good ones.:)

I love to see a nicely decorated house at Christmas and we always put decorations up. I have a love-hate relationship with Christmas trees though and the cats usually pull it over anyway. I don't like the decorations to go up too early and they definitely come down on 12th night.

I really must get writing some cards.

The person who used to do the nicest decorations and really make Christmas exciting and wonderful has gone and moved abroad and it will seem very strange this year without her.

We are going to get it too over the next few days. About time too. And it looks like it will be getting cooler: daytime highs around 1 or 2c, and going down to about -10 at night. Soon be time for the ice pad behind City Hall. It's an artificial sheet and there will be free public skating, with music of course. And it is very close to some nice bars, restaurants and coffe shops ... and the best fish and chips in town, Lancashire style, at the Pilot House, just a block away. And who says winter can't be fun? (The question is rhetorical by the way, and does not require an answer:)).

I suppose that I could have mentioned that City Hall is a beautiful early 19th century structure which was Canada's first parliament building and that it is all lit up, and that there is a huge tree beside the rink all dressed up of course, and that the whole thing is a hop, skip and a stagger from the inner harbour where the brig St. Lawrence is all lit up, and that just across the water is Fort Henry, part of a UN World Heritage Site, and that it too is all decorated, and that Clarence St. running from the Square to Lake Ontario still has its original cobblestones, and .... had enough yet?

Ok, but there are times when I would rather climb the Coppice ... often it is the simple things that are the best ... I think that the best Christmas show I ever saw was the Northern Lights in Ile a la Crosse, Saskatchewan. Or the amazing star show one gets away from the cities, and in large areas of our country where there are hardly any people. A couple of years ago, close to Christmas, I and a friend took a walk up Fort Henry hill; we had a couple of bags of apples, and we fed the deer. Simple but so satisfying.

Still snowing ... big fluffy white flakes .... downtown is looking a lot like a Christmas Card ... and the plows and sanders are out in force so that Kingstonians, possibly the world's worst drivers, don't kill or maim themselves in the afternoon commute.

Although I am a prolific letter writer, sender of e-mails/faxes - I still take great pleasure in sending out Christmas cards every year to my friends and family members around the globe.

I do not subscribe to the commercial aspects of Christmas but decorating the house for the holidays is a must. During a recent basement reorganization and rehab, my husband unearthed one of his old toys from the early 1950's......Roy Rogers' Mineral Town, complete with action figures. We decided to place it under our Christmas tree this year. I just took a photo and turned it into my avatar.

Hey, I just knew you were the card and tree type. Will see if we can arrange to send you a massive outbreak of Canadian Arctic air for the Season along with some of the white stuff.:D
