The short answer is - yes.
The official name is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shortened often to LDS but we get the nickname Mormon. That is actually the name of a man. He is the one who compiled what we know as The Book of Mormon (hence the name of it) from other historical records. For a while the church tried to distance itself from the name in order to emphasise that we worship Jesus Christ not Mormon but in the past couple of years our President has said it has led to some confusion with people thinking there are two separate organisations so he kind of re-adopted the nickname. These other groups such as the FLDS also have the Book of Mormon as scripture. There are several such splinter groups but not all are as controversial. None of them have any affiliation with the official LDS church which has headquarters based in Salt Lake City. |

P.S. Mormon lived several hundred years ago on the American continent and the abridged version of scriptural and historical records which he wrote was translated by Joseph Smith Jnr.

Joseph Smith was the first prophet of our church in what we refer to as 'this dispensation' meaning this time period. So yes, we do follow his teachings and those of other prophets and leaders. We have the Bible as well as the Book of Mormon and this year we've been studying the New Testament in the adult Sunday School classes.

ahh, if i remeber rightly, he was visited by an angel(gabriel?) in his bedroom and told that he would be visited and shown to a place where he would find something.. he was visited again and shown to the place and he felt calm and believed? i am trying to remember more, but i may be wrong completely....

That's close. It wasn't Gabriel though. It was Moroni. We have a statue of him on top of our Temple near Chorley.
