Well, you see its quite simple really - some people may consider them to be largely the same, the fact is there is a big difference. You see, a ring road is a road that you drive along that goes round something, in a roundabout sort of fashion. This should not be confused with a roundabout which is a road that you go round which serves only to take you round something whilst a ring road is a road that is designed for you to go round in order to perhaps get round something.

Ah yes, Mike, but a ring road is not necessarily in a ring ..depends on the geography of a town. Can also have many roundabouts on a ring road. A roundabout is only placed at a busy junction to aid traffic to get to their destination, whether on the ring road or crossing over main thoroughfare ... :D
The combination of roundabout with traffic lights is now ideal for this busy junction .. been through today and a piece of cake.
Roundabouts are Ok, but safety traffic management has to be considered at all times as opposed to flow of traffic. Roundabouts are always more accident prone than traffic lights, because it is dependent on human judgement, not like traffic lights when you stop at a command. Think the mixture at Whitebirk is excellent.
Someone suggested a roundabout at the Hare and Hounds in Clayton, but this would not work for reasons above. Safety will always overide traffic flow.
