Re: Queen Elizabeth II's legacy
interesting concept .... (sorry bit of a wander) if the German bombs that hit Buckingham Palace in WW2 (Queen Mother " now I can look the East End in the face" ) had taken the royal family out , would Churchill have brought back the Duke of Windsor ? a friend of Hitler or put the drug addled Duke of Kent on the throne or gone for the country squire the Duke of Gloucester or would he have taken Cromwells route and made himself "lord protector" ......wonder if there are any records rat-holed away

Now as for the Queen's legacy do we really want royalty that have ennough power to leave a legacy? as it is she has waved her hand, shook other hands, smiled nicely, produced an heir, and above all she has not changed the country's religion, declared war on anyone, caused any major scandals or raised any taxes shes just got on with the job and let everyone else do the dirty work. Compared with some of her predecessors she has done a marvelous job. |

Re: Queen Elizabeth II's legacy
The Queen and the monarchy is part of the British political system, in the same way that the Presidency and the President) is part of the American system. Both are democracies, and both have much more in common than most people are prepared to admit. Elizabeth ll has done her job well ... and it is as Granny Claret says, a difficult job ... she reigns but she doesn't rule; she has been a staunch figure of continuity in a troubled world. She may be a little old fashioned, but only in the sense that duty, honor, and patriotism have become old fashioned. She has put her personal interests second to the good of the country. And, by the way, she is Queen of Canada and is popular in most of the country outside of Quebec. (And even there she is tolerated rather than villified.) Our war planes still bear the logo RCAF, our ships are HMC ships, the bulk of our armed forces in Afghanistan belong to the Royal 22nd Regiment (which, by the way, is a francophone unit ... while the French in Afghanistan are repeating their heroics of 1940, the only french soldiers fighting are Canadians) supported by the guns of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, the tanks of the Royal Dragoons, and the CF-18s of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The Queen's legacy?
Why of course, it's that tree huggin', defender of faith's', 6 O-levelled but still managed to get into Cambridge, infamous adulterer, her son, and our next King, God help us, Prince Charles. |
