Teaching the Qoran would benefit all the children. and is not that different to the bible. Many of the stories are the same and i have found that the muslim children seem to know more about Jesus than the white children. It isnt fair to ignore the childrens religion and concentrate on another. This was highlighted for me the christmas before last which fell at the same time as Eid. All seasonal work concentrated on christmas and Eid was hardly mentioned.

two lessons a week are put aside for RE, i think thats plenty of time.

When i went to primary school it was a C of E one we had a morning a week when the vicar came into school and he taught us RE. Went to the high school and we had 1 double lesson and 2 single lessons a week. They taught us about all different religons - c of e, catholic, baptist, methodist, buddhism, hindu, muslim, etc oh and this was 25 years ago. So whats different?

My kids were taught about all religions in high school as well. Feel it gave them a bit more understanding about other faiths.

I left Mount Carmel in 2005, a Roman Catholic High School. My 'Religious Education' lessons were Christian Education and nothing more.

I would back up anyone who would propose for children to be taught about all major religions in schools. Not just major religions but new religious movements and new age secular practices, as their education progresses.

Children should not be made somewhat ignorant by faith schools, as they have been done in the past. (I know - I was one of them. I knew nothing about important beliefs away from Christianity/the West until I took Religious Studies at 'A' level.) Children should be taught about religious diversity regardless of their upbringing or their family's religious convictions.

This is the modern world - a global society. Britain can not continue to be so blinkered and insular. Multiculturalism exists and our children's education should correspond with that. Lack of education about religion breeds ignorance and stereotype, which in turn creates idiocy and hate.

So does the team think that this religious instruction would be a one way or two way street?

If those who think that many religions should be taught in school why are the NUT specifically talking about the Koran ? I'm sure there must be the equivalent in Buddhism, Hinduism etc. Should they not be going through all of them ?

Religion should be taught in schools without any bias at all. Children should be taught about all religions without any predujice at all.

Oh come on dave you know as well as I do we have to toe the line were muslims are concerned so it was only a matter of time before this cropped up, and was written in tablets of stone. This is a christian country, lets keep each to his own, teaching other religions in schools won't make a blind bit of difference, because as usualit will be on a one-way street, and as usual we'll be the ones going down the wrong way

Re: Are they NUTS?

Lets just scrap mainstream school then, and teach the kids other religions and nothing else, most who are for this are the ones harping on about teachers not having time to teach properly as it is, and you want more religions brought in, well if they do, which lessons are going to make way for them, english?

emamum 25-03-2008 17:27

Re: Are they NUTS?

i meant make them part of the religious studies lessons they already have.

Dont you think this will detract from what they are taught about our own religion? I do.
