Checking deliveries
Had fun last night and thought you might all like to comment
We have been ordering from Tesco online for > 3 years with no issue, it works well and I seem to spend less than if we go to teh shop as well :D Anyway, whenever deliveries come I always take them into the kitchen and check it off against the list to make sure everything is there and nowt is damaged. no problems up till last night when the delivery bloke goes off on one for me having the audacity to check it. " I don't have time to wait while you check it, I only have 7 minutes you know!". I replied that I check anything I have delivered and its never been a problem before. Its not my problem that his bosses impose those timescales and he should take it up with them. I was gobsmacked as to how he was talking to me in my own kitchen! I tell him to wait outside whilst I continue to check it. In all it took less than 5 mins. I take outside 2 tins that were badly dented and he tells me to sign there. grabs the paper, jumps in and storms off!!! so I ring up and complain. I get a call back from the home delivery supervisor at Haslingden store who tells me whilst he shouldn't have said it the way he did what he says is right and that I shouldn't check it whilst he is there. I shold just unload it, sign for it and then let him go. then I should check it and ring them if there is any losses/damage etc. Now this isn't clear on any emails or the website that this is the 'procedure' but how would you feel about just signing for stuff unchecked? |
Re: Checking deliveries
I thought when you signed for something your saying its in good order.
if they want you to sign then i would add "un checked" to the sig |
Re: Checking deliveries
I would sign it unchecked if it was me, purely because with my two kids it takes about 1/2 hour to sort and put my shopping away but he should not speak to you like that. There are ways of talking to people and showing a bit of respect. Afterall, it is you and others like you that are keeping him in a job. IF he had a problem he should have just advised you to sign it unchecked rather than going off on one at you. Ive never used home delivery but if the drivers are like that I doubt that I ever would
|
Re: Checking deliveries
its teh first time in over 3 years so its definately a one off. normally I have a laugh with them (especially teh bloke who ALWAYS goes to the wrong house :D ) I just find it strange that people will sign for something that they haven't checked. Perhaps it becuase my first job I used to sign for deliveries worth > £50K but I just wouldn't even think of putting my name to something without proper checks.

Re: Checking deliveries
Having read about the problems of another member on here with Tesco drivers maybe there was a faulty batch of staff training :D

Re: Checking deliveries
I've never ordered from a supermarket online, and doubt I ever would (wouldn't be much point as I already work in one!) But any other packages I get ie: Amazon, Play etc... I've never checked once. I just grab the parcel and sign for it. I've never had any problems. You must have been well within your rights to check your delivery. Have you checked the Tesco website there must be a Home Delveries Policy.
Tell you what though I'm glad that we don't have the hassle of the home deliveries at our store! For the reason that its the person instore who gets the hassle when some numpty delivery driver hasn't done their job properly. |
Re: Checking deliveries
I wouldn't sign for something without checking it either
When you sign for it, you are saying it has arrived in good order The bloke has told you to let him go after signing for it, so that when you come to ring up cos something is wrong they can laugh at you cos you signed for it! |

Re: Checking deliveries
I have had regular Tesco deliveries for 7 years and never had any issues with the drivers.(never had a bad one yet!)
I dont expect them to deliver into my kitchen, even though they always offer to - the front hall is far enough for me. I never unpack and check before they leave except for the spirits wine and cigarettes.(which I make a point of looking out for as I empty their delivery boxes into my hallway). I find that Tesco rarely have a missing item (unlike Asda :() and when it has happened, one phone call and the value has been refunded without question I once reported 2 small items missing - got a refund - then found them amongst my recycling box in my hall (where I had accidentaly put them). When I phoned to apologise, they were amused. I told them to debit the amount back again - but they never did. The 'missing item report' system works well, and the honesty of the customer is always assumed - unless it is blatently abused. Therefore there is no need to delay the driver by doing an unpacking check. I think that you may well have gained the reputation for being an awkward customer Ian ;) |
Re: Checking deliveries
I have signed for lots of stuff before without checking the contents of the package. Sometime signing for stuff that is for a neighbour. I was under the impression that you were signing to confirm delivery, not the condition of the contents.
Never had groceries delivered before but I have to say that I would be inclined to want to check the delivery, seems like common sense to me. You did right to complain and make the delivery man wait outside entwisi. Not sure I would have kept so composed. |
Re: Checking deliveries
I always sign unchecked, but maybe that is because I used to take deliveries for different departments where I worked
|
Re: Checking deliveries
We have the shopping delivered, it is easier, cheaper and time saving, I never check the bags untill later, and on the rare occasion something is not correct, it is always sorted out, I do understand though that, if it is in your nature, or indeed your job, then you are more likely to check on the spot, the driver probably could have explained his situation a little better than he did, and in a better manner, but I would sympathise with his issues around time allocated to deliveries, he can complain all he wants about his conditions of work, but unless, as a customer, YOU complain about the fact he didnt have time to wait, nothing will change, customer complaints make change, not employee complaints.
|
Re: Checking deliveries
I dont normally check them but on the last occasion that I did it was because the driver had said there substitutions on some fresh pizzas- I hadn't ordered any pizzas.... it was someone elses delivery !

I agree, Margaret. I have used Sainsbury's online for about 4 years now and I never check deliveries whilst the driver is still here. I check it off as I put it away after the driver has gone. On the very rare occasion, perhaps once or twice, that I have found an item to be missing or damaged I have phoned the number on the receipt and the item is credited without question. They are very good. |
Re: Checking deliveries
Well speaking as a delivery driver myself most delivery companies do follow the same ways as tesco where you sign for the item/s and check. If there is any damage you are covered by various different means. There is nothing worse than when you deliver something being asked stupid questions like what is it? How the hell do i know you ordered it. Is it for me? I have just said your name havent i? I dont have time for people to check the things i deliver thats why i always put unchecked next to their names but some still get stroppy and say well i aint signing for it then. Simple answer to that for me.... ill take it back then goodbye and all of a suden they change their minds, strange.

Re: Checking deliveries
Most consignees in businesss will not check the contents whilst the driver waits .. the only thing they are expected to do is to sign for the number of cartons/parcels and if a shortage will make a note of that.
Have always to rely on the honesty of customers after that, and seems like the Supermarkets are very good with this .. as would be too difficult to prove otherwise. Sometimes .. weight of consignment can be an indication .. but not foolproof. Agree though that the driver could have been a little more civil to you Entwisi. Can be rotten for some 'carrier' drivers though .. they sometimes have to take the flack for late deliveries from companies when nothing to do with them at all. |
Re: Checking deliveries
Ok seeing as it was pool night last night - i got told the story last night and i agree with entwisi - i wouldnt sign for something that i hadnt checked. Could possibly be because i used to be storekeeper and signing for stuff that i hadnt checked could possibly cause great hassle to me, the supplier, my boss and if it was needed urgently the bus passengers... If i had to sign it and didnt have time to check it or in some cases the stuff was too big to come into the stores we did sign it unchecked.
One thing though - where was Julie when all this was going on? :D:D:D |

I was doing the ironing.
I shouted through to the kitchen that if he didn't want to wait while it was checked off then he could take it all back. To which he stormed off to his van. It took him longer to winge than it took Ian to check it all off. |
Re: Checking deliveries
I would never check things off just sign for it safe in the knowledge that if there was a problem i could easily get it sorted.
Yes the manner in which the driver spoke to you was wrong but they are on a strict time schedule and really don't need to be hanging about whilst people check every little item they have ordered, they do get into trouble if they take too long. At the end of the day they are only doing their job to their instructions. And no i am not biased because i work for tesco! |
Re: Checking deliveries
Just wondered what they do about frozen foods ... are they specially insulated or anything ? Or are their vans thermostatically controlled or whatever ?
|
Re: Checking deliveries
The vans have a refridgeration section.
The driver always presents me with separate bags of 'chilled' and 'frozen' as the last items to hand over. I suppose that they are instructed to draw your attention to them so that they can be put into your own refridgeration before anything else is stored away. |

IMHO I'm paying £4.25 or whatever for a delivery they can wait till I've checked its all what I ordered and in good condition. I hate getting dented cans of stuff( which shouldn't be sold BTW due to teh coating in the tim becoming damaged and spoiling teh foodstuff)
They might be "doing their job", one of my complaints is that us as customers aren't told up front that you should sign for it unchecked and ring in any discrepancies. plus teh fact that I've been checking for > 3 years and no one has ever winged before. |

Re: Checking deliveries
Quite an interesting one this - first of all, it should be remembered that you cannot sign away your statutory rights. When you order goods, you are entitled to expect those goods to be of satisfactory quality - which includes freedom from minor defects etc. Signing that you have received the goods is not the same as signing to say you have received and examined the goods and accept that they are of satisfactory quality.
s.34 of the Sale of Goods Act (as amended) provides – “[unless otherwise agreed], when the seller tenders delivery of goods to the buyer, he is bound on request to afford the buyer a reasonable opportunity of examining the goods for the purpose of ascertaining whether they are in conformity with the contract…” Now, that doesnt necessarily mean on your doorstep - and there is also the argument that if the terms and conditions which bind each sale imply your "unless otherwise agreed" acceptance that you waive this particular right, then Tesco will have covered themselves. I would however argue that such a term is unfair by virtue of the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts regs as it would seek to restrict a consumer's statutory rights, and lets not forget of course that a term in a contract cannot take precedence over your rights in law. Does that help? |

I'm sure that it is normal procedure to sign, let the driver go and ring up with any discrepancies. It's not normal to expect the driver to wait. Have you had several drivers waiting for you over the last 3 years or just the one? |
Re: Checking deliveries
I've used TESCO's delivery service for the past 4 years and found it a really excellent service. occaisionally there is an issue of some of their fresh produce being close to the use by date however easilly resolved by a call to customer services who offer a swift apology and refunds.
Although you do pay for the service I reckon its cheaper without the additions deposited in the trolly by the kids Personally I dont agree that it's reasonable to check each and every item, Ian in checking your order has there ever been a shortfall? Surely if every customer took your attitude then there would be delays, fewer deliveries and possible increase in charges. and please could you learn how to spell "the" |
Re: Checking deliveries
I wouldn't make the driver wait, but I would expect him to be polite with the customers that do, (even if it's only a polite, no I'm sorry I'm not given enough time to wait, please ring the store if there are any mistakes), bullying the driver with threats such as wait or take it back are just as bad as him being rude!
There are good drivers and bad drivers, but there are also good customers and awkward prigs!:D Quote:
Now that you know, rather than being annoyed by such a minor quirk, if you where to be polite enough to search for the thread you might work towards understanding how much more annoying it actually is for entwisi? :D |
Re: Checking deliveries
I wonder if you got the same driver we got for our non-delivery? We'd never ordered from Tesco online before and we didn't have a particularly large order. In fact having checked through the printout that we just got I saw that most of the items were ones and twos. It was hardly the world's biggest order but when the driver arrived he refused to unload it himself because he said there was too much for him to carry and he would 'be knackered' if he had to do it all. He asked if there was someone who could come and help him. I replied that there was only me. There was nothing online to say that we were ordering too much and that we needed to have someone here to help unload it. I've compared notes with other people and we didn't actually order more than other people have on a regular basis. That was 24th March.
When the guy wouldn't even open the back of the van because there was no-one here to help him unload I phoned Busman, but he was working and could hardly just knock off and come home. The driver refused to speak to him so he told me to tell him to just take the stuff back then. Busman complained to Tesco that night when he got home and they said they would get the store to phone me and apologise the next morning - no-one did. He complained to them that night again about the lack of phone call and again was promised that someone would ring me on Friday. They didn't. Then to put the tin lid on it we got the credit card statement yesterday and we'd been debited but not been refunded! So off we went to Tesco Haslingden and saw someone who had nothing to do with home deliveries as the relevant person wasn't there but the person we did see sorted out the refund and gave us a print out of the order - which was when I checked to see just how much there was that the driver had been objecting to carrying. It was no more than Busman would have brought home in the car - the bulkiest being 10 bottles of water and 8 cartons of milk! The driver had even had the cheek to say that was more milk than a family needed and had asked if we were selling it in a shop! |

You probably just had very bad luck there and got an awful driver. I'm sure that he was just trying it on and that it is not Tesco policy to have you hauling the shopping out of the van yourself. The trouble is that these drivers are representatives of their company, aren't they? Especially when it's your first order.....first impressions and all that.:( |

If it had been the first negative experience with Tesco it might not have been as bad but we had the exploding cola can saga too which they really didn't take responsibility for. Not impressed with them at all.

Re: Checking deliveries
Willow's experience amazes me. I have an order fortnightly. It often includes 20 litres of milk and at least 2 large bags of cat litter along with normal groceries.
The drivers have to carry it up a flight of 13 steps to my front door and there has never been a suggestion that the driver needed help |

Well I didn't know whether to believe him or not. He said he'd been told to tell me that. Apparently there are limits to the amount you can order in one go but if the website let us order it and if someone loaded it into the van then surely it was within the limits? Wouldn't the website have restricted our order if we'd ordered too much?

The cost of the order was about £120 - hardly enough to stock a shop and most of the items were just odd ones of, like one bottle of vinegar, one drum of salt. The heaviest was probably 10 bottles of water but it's hardly a shop stock is it? We easily go through 10 bottles of fizzy water a week.

Re: Checking deliveries
Regarding the incident that Willow is informing you of, here is a letter (not brilliantly written but I was pressed for time) that I am about to send to Tesco....
Dear Madam, I spoke to a team leader few days back and told her that I would be putting my complaint about Tesco Home Shopping in a letter as well as verbally explaining to her.......... First a little background about myself and my family, (It IS relevant) We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints otherwise known as Mormons and as such, we are encouraged to hold enough stores to last around one year. As you may well imagine, it is very difficult logistically and financially to maintain this stock, and we recently found that we had seriously depleted our storage. Ordering on-line seemed the practical thing to do as we required rather more than the usual shopping list but as this was the first time for us, we kept our order down to around £120-00 with the intention of purchasing more during the summer months. We have always bought from either Tesco or Asda locally and I admit that I did at first try to order from Asda but when I got to the bottled water; their website denied me the opportunity of ordering more than 6 two litre bottles. (My family get through at least 8 litres of both fizzy and plain water each week let alone building up several months’ stock) I also “timed out” because they only give 2 hours to browse which considering my inexperience on-line was not long enough! ...............so I ordered from Tesco............ The order that I placed was a combination of “storage” and general things for immediate consumption by the family and I was so pleased that you had no restriction on the amount of each item that I required (so I thought) My time slot was Tuesday 25th March, between 10am and Noon. I would be at work but my wife would be home to receive the order. The van arrived on time, my wife went out to speak to the driver who said (approximately) “There’s too much stuff ordered, if I carried it all in, I would be knackered!” He invited my wife to carry everything in from the van on her own, and on at least 2 occasions during the conversation, accused us of running a business and ordering just to sell on at a profit in a non-existent shop. (If you check our order, you will notice that the majority of tinned goods are Tesco own brand and there are many “single” items) He also made comment that we had ordered 8 x 6-2 ltre cartons of milk.....And said that it was far too much and that we should have only ordered 1x6 cartons. I have a wife and two daughters that are ALL on a milk supplement diet which means that they have one meal per day ....Plus two “milk supplement” meals. Total consumption in our household including myself is 3.5 Litres per day!! He also told my wife that we were not welcome to use Tesco Home Shopping again as we have been banned! I received a phone call at work from my wife who was distressed and upset, the delivery driver refused to speak to me over the phone so I had to tell my wife to inform the driver that he could take every single item back to the shop. That evening, I phoned customer service in Dundee, explained briefly what had occurred and she (didn’t get a name) promised to contact the Home Shopping Manager responsible and to get him/her to phone my wife the next day with an explanation/apology. It didn’t happen! I also asked that my payment be debited back into my credit card and was informed that it would be done the very next day (26th March) The following Thursday, I went to my local Tesco in Blackburn and spoke to the H/Sh Manager myself. His name was Paddy and he did explain that he had had the previous day off hence, no phone call. I explained all and he said he would phone my wife the following day after finding out the details from the driver concerned. I left the store with a conviction that all will be well..............NO PHONE CALL!! For a few days, nothing was done either by me or Tesco. 2 years ago, I had a complaint against Tesco (exploding coke cans) that cost me in excess of £90-00 and over a year later, I was sent a token for either £5-00 or £10-00. In that time, I was virtually accused of making up a false claim, freezing the cans to make them split, keeping them out in the summer heat (Early May) and the three cans that I returned “got lost??” between the Haslingden branch and their eventual destination. Don’t misunderstand me; I am NOT looking for compensation in this case, only an explanation and apology to my wife along with an assurance that should we ever need to use your services again, we can do so without the embarrassment of being told that we are “barred.” It would also be nice to know exactly what we can order and in what amount. On Tues. 8th April, I phoned you again ......... and found out that the order actually came out of the Haslingden branch, not Blackburn. (Next time I’m in Blackburn, I will make a point of seeing Paddy to apologize although perhaps he should have known what areas he delivers in) On Thurs. 10th April, I contacted my credit card company and discovered that my money had NOT been returned, this was 16 days after my rejection of the goods! I called into the Haslingden branch the same day but the Home Shopping Manager was on a day off so I spoke to Karen who was the non food manager and was acting duty manager. She promised to deal with my complaint.........and also found out that my credit had still not been returned. (She dealt with that immediately) I have since received two e-mails, one from Kendra Banks (marketing director) who has thanked me for my first order and has given me £10-00 to use with my next order (obviously unaware that I have been banned).......... And the second one from the customer service team that has listed the items refunded and at best shows a complete lack of professionalism and if I was to be the cynical (which I am where Tesco is concerned) I would consider it an attempt to make it as hard as possible to accurately give me a detailed account of what exactly has been credited to my account and the total. I will finish this letter with a copy of the e-mail sent to me. (This is NOT how it was presented on your computers as Karen gave us a printed copy on 10th April) Dear Mr TAYLOR-HILL, I am pleased to confirm that we have refunded the following items to the card you used for payment Item Ordered Quantity Price Refunded Refund 1 £4.50 Benylin Chesty Non Drowsy Cough 150ml 1 £3.11 Tesco Pure Corn Oil 3 Litre 2 £4.90 Tesco Longlife Semi Skimmed Milk 6x1ltr 8 £23.84 Sarsons Malt Vinegar 2litre 1 £2.29 Tesco Easy Cook Long Grain Rice 4kg 2 £5.18 Tesco Value Toilet Tissue 12 Roll 2400 Sht 5 £5.60 Princes Lunch Tongue 184g 1 £1.28 Tesco Cous Cous 1kg 1 £1.28 English Provender Moroccan Spiced Chutney 300g 1 £1.59 Strepsils Honey And Lemon 16s 1 £2.22 Germolene Antiseptic Cream30g M 1 £0.97 Heinz Top Down Squeezy Tomato Ketchup Sauce 700g 1 £1.74 Hp Sauce Squeezy Bottle 850g 1 £1.94 Saxa Table Salt 750g 2 £0.74 Tesco Mince Beef & Onion392g 6 £2.76 Glenryck Pilchards In Tomato Sauce 425g 4 £1.60 Tesco Dual Action Blackcurrant Lozenges 24's 1 £0.75 Tesco Value Stretch Bandage 5cm X 4.5m 1 £0.44 Tesco Value Dressing Strip 6cm X 100cm 1 £0.45 Tesco Lemon & Lime With Citrusmarmalade 454g 1 £0.60 Lyles Golden Syrup 454g 1 £0.68 Tesco Savoury Rice Golden 120g 4 £1.44 Tesco Value Strawberry Jam 454g 1 £0.39 Tesco Value Beef Stew 400g 4 £1.96 Tesco Value Beans & Sausages567g 12 £4.56 Tesco Sardines In Tomato Sauce 120g 4 £1.40 Tesco Sensetive/ Multistretch Plasters 24's 1 £0.89 Amoy Light Soy Sauce 150ml 1 £0.69 Tesco Simple Linctus 200ml 1 £0.91 Tesco Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix 170g 4 £0.92 Tesco Paracetamol 500mg 16 Caplets 1 £0.24 Tesco Dispersible Asprin 300mg 16 1 £0.12 Lancaster Chopped Ham & Pork170g 4 £1.36 Tesco Value Sweetcorn 325g 18 £2.70 Tesco Value Tuna Chunks In Brine 185g 6 £1.74 Tesco Value Sparkling Water 2 Litres 10 £1.70 Tesco Value Still Water 2 Litre Bottle 10 £1.70 Tesco Value Chicken & Mushroom Quick Snack 76g 10 £2.30 Tesco Value Ready To Serve Custard 396g 8 £1.52 Tesco Value Strawberry Jelly128g 6 £0.90 Tesco Value Rice Pudding 425g 6 £1.14 T.Val Garden Peas In Sugared Salt Water 300g 12 £2.28 Tesco 10 Value Vegetable Stock Cubes 97g 1 £0.19 Tesco Value Meatballs In Tomato Sauce 392g 6 £1.74 Tesco Value Broken Mandarinslight Syrup 312g 12 £1.32 Tesco Value Golden Vegetable Savouryrice 120g 6 £1.32 Refund 2 £0.20 Tesco Chicken Flavour Instant Noodles 85g 10 £2.30 Tesco Value Orange Jelly 128g 6 £0.90 Tesco Pear Halves In Juice 410g 4 £1.00 Tesco Strawberries In Juice 406g 4 £1.00 Kingsfood/ Lancaster 8 Hot Dogs In Brn 400g 6 £1.38 Tesco Value Spaghetti 500g 4 £0.92 Tesco Value Spaghetti In Tomato Sauce 410g 12 £1.80 Tesco Value Baked Beans In Tomt/Sauce 420g 12 £2.40 Tesco Value New Potatoes 567g 24 £6.00 Tesco Value Plum Tomatoes 400g 12 £2.28 This is an automatically generated e-mail. Re: Checking deliveries
heh, good on you Busman, I found the lady at Haslingden to be extremely rude as well. At one point I had to point out that it is extremely rude to talk over people before they had finished speaking and would she kindly shut up till I had finished explaining teh problem.
Anyway, teh reason I resurrected this thread.... We just received another delivery( I thought I'd put it down as a one off and give them another chance to shine). Well, in comes the bloke and Julie and I start checking it again as it wasn't a large one. Only turns out there was a complete tray of chilled stuff that wasn't ours. It had stickers with our name on but wasn't orederd by us or on our 'checklist'. So I saved them ~£10 of spoilt food because I could give it back there and then. If I had followed their procedures it woudl have been spoilt as I don't have room in my fridge for it so would have had to leave it out all night(As they can be stuffed if they think I'm staying up till they get someone to come and collect it) and we wouldn't be available till 6pm tomorrow for them to collect it. Its OK Mr Tesco, you don't need to thank me for helping your profits........... |
