Who would make the best Prime Minister?

Obviously a lot of people would choose 'other' but I'm going to go for a 'best of all evils' approach and list the leaders of the three main parties. Very similar to a recent poll released, but I won't announce those figures here so it won't skew the vote!

garinda 11-05-2008 08:36

Can't vote, as my preferred option would be 'other'.

The idea is you pick somebody who has a chance of being in, so your 'preferred' one of a bad bunch as you appear to think of them as. :D

You don't do many yougov polls it seems? :p

Re: Who would make the best Prime Minister?

For one thing not having another option completely ignores the views of anyone who might vote Green for instance, or for another marginal party, so skews the findings.

andrewb 11-05-2008 09:11

Re: Who would make the best Prime Minister?

If you think we'll have a green PM in 2010 then you're a bit mad! It's a poll to see who people think is the best of the main candidates. Nick Cleggs only in on the basis he might be in a coalition.

Yougov accurately predicted the London Mayor elections too btw.

Not a very fair poll Cyfr, as one of the persons named is already a Prime Minister making one or two unpopular decisions at the moment. We have no experience of the other two ever being in office, so not all on a level playing field if you know what I mean.

I'm not going to battle about the poll. I did it the same way offical pollsters did. It's not who you support its who out of the 3 do you think would make the best prime minister. It's not about who would make it in 2010, its about right now, who do you think.

If you're not happy with the poll then set up your own.

Why do you keep giving us your homework to do?

I doubt it.

The majority of people have said they would have voted for an 'other' option.

Hardly a ringing Accy Web endorsment for 'Dave' Cameron, even when pitted against a deeply unpopular Prime Minister, and a faceless wonder.

On this note, I am currently working on the offer and acceptance of contracts...

I have a scenario for you with two possible routes.

1. Bob is waiting at the bus stop.
The bus arrives, bob gets on, pays the driver the fee and receives his ticket and sits down. Bus sets off.

2. Bob is waiting at the bus stop.
Bus drives passed him even though he indicated he wanted the bus to stop. Bob isn't happy.

In situation 1, who is making the offer, and who makes the acceptance? Is bob making the offer, as he is offering his money, which the bus driver could reject or accept, or is the bus driver making the offer by allowing bob to get onto the bus, and the bob would accept by doing so? Or is the bus company making the offer by having a bus shelter available in the first place?

In situation 2, is the building of a bus shelter an offer of services? If yes, would it be acceptance to stand in the bus shelter? If you can say yes to both of these then are you breaching contract by only standing in the bus shelter for shelter rather than intention to get onto the bus?

These questions have been raised in the courts, but I still ponder over them as the answers are still quite uncertain. What do YOU think?

:D

EDIT: Remember that the law doesn't necessarily recognise 'common sense', and in most contract law it is completely ignored :p

MargaretR 11-05-2008 17:37

A bus driver has the right to refuse to let a person board his vehicle, and does not need to supply a reason.

You haven't answered the question, the question is who is making the offer and who is making the acceptance. Did I not specify that this is a contract law question?

So if he stops he is offering... or is the passenger offering because he is offering his money which the bus driver than accepts?

There is no right answer regardless of what your bus driver friend may think is the correct answer, because if there was there would be no need for lawyers and judges to question it in court, we'd just get a computer to do it :p

This actual situation has never had a straight answer provided in court, which is why I thought it would be interesting to ask.

And nobody seems to care who is the next prime minister anyway, seems everyone is just complaining about the content of his poll :p nobody forced you to reply to my thread wander :p so I am presuming you are just as confused as many academics who have tried to decide upon the answer to the problem :p

I hear what you’re saying, seems a sad state of affairs when there are no real alternatives to Curly Larry an Mo, as in Cyfr’s options

Maybe someone will post what they think would be a good leader :(

Maybe before thinking about who would be a good leader, you guys should figure out where you want to go:hidewall:

I'm not trying to be flippant; where do you think England should go: further into Europe, into isolation, towards the US, down the tubes .... and then ask who is the best person for the job. Sounds like not too many of you like the options; so that means that any one of them could lead you down the tubes.

Ah now you figured me out  France anyone? Maggie Thatcher had a great appreciation for France.

Yes I am pro-Europe, hear me roar...

loose - slack, not tight.
lose - the opposite of win, or misplacement of something

I find there is nothing worse than attempting to insult someone but spelling things really badly. You know who you are :D

It is pretty amazing how somebody could get them wrong repeatedly. Things like that are drummed into your head persistently in schools.

As a confirmed Eurosceptic, I would agree, Roy, but surely, as a modern Conservative, she's just following the party line.

With her gob (self confessed) she would be as well following the Maginot Line.
