You can't blame the citizens for wanting power for their children and family, power to work and earn a living. I think people would prefer to pay less for said power when it was available too, so they could have more money to spend on food, or have additional heating during the winter periods.

The miners themselves didn't want to strike, they wanted to earn a living, its a shame Scargill forced one trying to hold our sovereign country to ransom, or things probably would have ended differently.

On what basis does Thatcher get a state funeral? Is it because she was the first woman Prime Minister? Or because she reversed the economic fortunes of the UK? Or because she was a successful war leader? If it is the latter then it sets an unfortunate precedent. What happens when Tony Blair goes? Does he get 3 state funerals - one each for Kosovo, Bosnia and Sierra Leone then a kick up the arse for Iraq followed by mummification until we find out what the result in Afganistan will be?

I would be intrigued to know if there is any working class left in England .... and if it has shrunk, as I suspect it has, where does (or from reading the English papers and reading thro some of the debates on Accyweb "did" might be better than "does") Labour's support come from? Over here the NDP (our version of Labour) is strongly supported by the unions in terms of cash and troops on the ground. It surprises me that, in England, a middle of the road party has not taken the center with policies that reflect the new realities ... a party that mixes a degree of fiscal responsibility with a commitment to social programs. I realize it is difficult to form and promote a new party, but surely it would be better than either Labour or the Tories.

You could at least give your viewpoint of why somebody is wrong if you're going to say they are.

I find it hard to believe that British families would rather pay more for coal when their budget could be spent elsewhere. I find it hard to believe people would want days and days without power because a trade union boss decided to call a strike.

Last night at the bar I was talking to some drinking buddies about this .... and guess what: Winston Churchill and Maggie Thatcher were the only PMs that these drunken losers could name. A couple of guys mentioned Blair, but both thought he was still PM .... so, at the least Maggie has international recognition:rolleyes:

But with no hockey on tv, a good witch burning would be ok to watch, not as violent as the Leafs playing the Canadiens, but it will serve in a pinch:hidewall:

that is a total lie, the miners voted overwhelmingly to strike, n it was never about money, as the strike wore on into months, the Nottingham miners went back to work n the others remained on strike.as i was responsible fer taking a weekly collection at work,from those who wished to support em (were many) n visiting differant areas, mainly in yorkshire, i know damn well they wished to remain out as it was a matter of principle (jobs not money) i also know a lot more involving the police about that dispute, but its wasted on you.

I hope the actual funeral isn't as long as this thread, when churchill died we had days of no telly and only sombre music on all radio frequencies, this could go on as long as Diana's inquest if we aren't careful.

Well, I have no problems with what Maggie did in the Falklands, she did go a bit mad towards the end though.
However I would rather have her in her hey day now, than the shower of Ba@@@rds we have now. So no to Burn, but also no to state funeral.
You know when I was at college, one of my fellow students, himself a young tory, fancied her something rotten . Wonder if Cyfr feels the same way about Dave?

Personally, I think that we should have street parties, much like we had for the Queen's silver jubilee. They can have a state funeral for her as long as it doesn't come out of my taxes. Agreed; but does this warrant a State Funeral? I think that if there is strong opposition from a significant part of the population she should not have one. I know that my mom would have cut off her hand before putting an X by the name of a tory; but I know she admired Winston Churchill and was all in favor of his having a State Funeral. And Churchill was popular throughout the old Dominions .... in Kingston we have a Churchill St., a Churchill Cr., Winston Churchill School, there is a town in Manitoba called Churchill, famous for its Polar Bears .... etc. I admit that Thatcher had some good qualities; and perhaps tough times require a tough leader; but a State Funeral?

Name me one tourist who has come over here to see the royal family. Even if there were one or two did they actually get to see them? Did Liz or Philip open the front door to welcome them in for a cuppa? Not a chance!

It’s not the queen that people come to see but the various palaces and crown jewels and they will still be here after the monarchy is dumped.

So the monarchy does absolutely nothing for this country except sponge off the taxpayer.
