It isnt me that is catorgorising at all, My interpretation of a chav has always been very much the same as yours. This was something on BBC News 24 the other day and it just got me thinking. And to be honest I dont think the police should change their abbreviating just becase what they are abbreviating has come to light.:) |
Re: C.H.A.V... What does it mean?
i agree its wrong to stigmatise council house tenents, no question, but the question is to me- WHO actually decided what CHAV meant?whoever that was bears the responsibilty, cos i'm near certain most folk have no idea what it stands fer. plus its bin used fer yonks innocently, knowing the meaning aint gonna make much differance to me, cos it aint said in " that way"

It's generally acknowledged that the term Chav is actually derived from the Romani word 'chavi', meaning child. |
Re: C.H.A.V... What does it mean?
For all do-gooders and Political Correct types to be complaining seems a bit much , probably 'invented' by one of them (Home Office employee) if the truth was ever to come out , as a way of identifying a special social class without being accused of racial profiling

Re: C.H.A.V... What does it mean?
On the theme of police names, in Liverpool they're called the Bizzies, and in parts of Manchester they're called the Dibble, when I was young (many years ago) we used to call the police Rozers, can't think where that came from ;)

Re: C.H.A.V... What does it mean?
The name 'chav' existed long before the police hijacked it. It has been used to mean a certain style of dress and behaviour (Burbery and bling?) for a long time now too. Just because the police use it to mean 'council housed and violent' doesn't mean that applies to all chavs and doesn't mean that is what other people mean when they say 'chav'. The difference is the poloice are saying 'C.H.A.V.' and other people are saying 'chav'.
