Re: Famous Accrington brick manufacturer to close
I can't help wondering if they might have stayed competitive if they still made the old Nori bricks instead of the same old bricks you find everywhere. People may well have chosen the harder wearing Nori ones in preference.
I do hope they can manage to re-open in 18 months time but what happens to all the workers in the meanwhile? For their sakes I hope they find alternative employment, but then who will run the factory if and when it does re-open? A sad day for Accrington. |
Re: Famous Accrington brick manufacturer to close
Just saw a film crew outside on my way home and wondered what had happened, i know 2 people who work there, looks like the start of many firms folding....:(

Think this has been on the cards for quite some time, a friend of mine got finished last year. Such a shame another of the big employers bites the dust.

I know a lot of bricklayers that would disagree with that one. They were very difficult to lay. |
Re: Famous Accrington brick manufacturer to close
Well I've never been a brick layer but I have had a wall with the old Nori bricks and one with modern bricks and the older wall was still strong when the newer one had started to crumble. Did they change to the common ones because bricklayers preferred them?

A bricklayer lays what he is told to lay he can't pick and choose It's decided by the Architect. Accrington Nori are/were by far the best bricks in the world but they are Engineering bricks more suited for bridges - Factories/Chimneys etc.than House building. The shear weight of them and the fact that they are impervious to water means you are limited to the number you can lay without the wall buckling under the weight. Not much use when you are paid by the number of bricks layed. Although many houses all over the world are built with them. Re: Famous Accrington brick manufacturer to close
My dad worked there for about 50 years he started off in the old kilns at whinney hill. My mum used to work in the office. I worked for 2 summers when I was at uni and my brother started there when he finished school. A sad day indeed.

Re: Famous Accrington brick manufacturer to close
It's the water imperviousness that I like about them. Saves having to coat the wall with a waterproofing.

Re: Famous Accrington brick manufacturer to close
Was one told that if your house was built with Nori brick it would never need a damp course. Anbody know if there is any truth in this?
